A Different Kind Of Fire Truck

Harbor Truck Bodies built a different kind of fire truck for a local fire department. This is an 11' Highliner Body, which is essentially an 11' service body with boxes added to the top that has doors opening upward to be able to see inside the compartments. In addition, this unique vehicle has an 18" bumper extension with compartments on both sides for small items and a work space and non-slip grip tread, or as some call it, spray on liner. Then, it has a 19" drop in tailgate with a 3-piece cargo bed enclosure that glides on teflon style pads and is so easy to move. The 3-piece enclosure opens up two thirds of the bed area when fully opened. And, of course, it wouldn't be a fire truck if it wasn't heavy duty and pretty too, so it's sitting on a Ford F450-550 uplevel chassis with Alcoa aluminum wheels. Pretty sweet, don't you think?

Conception GSR Hydraulic Ladders On Cargo Van Gets Job Done In Small Space

Below is a video showing the hydraulic ladder in action:
    (fun song too. . .)

Photos above are from the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana this year taken by Commercial Truck Success. Look at the inside of the van shots and how little space the substantial framework for this hydraulic ladder system takes. So little, in fact that it can be used as any cargo van would be and still have all the advantage of the one-person operation of the hydraulic ladder. The video is a good demonstration of that.

Here is some more from their home page website (Website is in English or French):

Huge Weight Savings Makes Reading Plumber Style Body A Perfect Choice

When you have a body as large as the one shown on the Isuzu truck above, to save up to 45% in weight is no small feat and in addition to that, can be a game changer in savings in overall cost and operating expense.

With this much weight savings, you might be able to order the Isuzu Eco-Max 12,000 GVWR truck, get significant savings on fuel and operating expenses, less overall cost and stay within the GVWR limits as opposed to going to the Isuzu NPR-HD at 14,500 GVWR. Or, on a conventional cab chassis, you may be able to effectively consider a 350 or 3500 vs the 450 or 4500 achieving similar chassis cost savings and significantly lower operating and service costs while remaining within GVWR. Of course, it makes a difference how much equipment you carry in your particular arrangement, but regardless of that, this aluminum body versus the steel counterpart will still yield great benefits.

Notice also that the roof provides plenty of light inside the unit without needing internal lights except at night. Even on a cloudy day, it is still bright enough to see well inside. I also like the cargo nets that are an available and inexpensive option to help keep things there they belong.

HINO TRUCKS SETS U.S. LAUNCH PLAN FOR ITS NEW CLASS 5 CAB-OVER

Novi, Michigan – Hino Trucks new Class 5 195 and 195h COE trucks will be arriving at qualified Hino dealerships across the country this fall. Available with a Diesel (195) or Diesel-Electric Hybrid (195h) powertrain, the 19,500 GVW trucks feature 210 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque from Hino’s 5-liter J05E Series engine.

The launch of this new cab-over product line offers Hino dealers an opportunity to reach new

customers and establishes Hino Trucks as the measure of quality, durability, reliability and hybrid technology in the cab-over market. "A successful launch of our new cab-over models is imperative to provide our customers and dealers with a competitive, world-class cab-over. Over the past several months, the management team at Hino has monitored the truck market rebound, the U.S. economy, and foreign currency exchange rates to develop a plan that supported our customers and dealers in the short term, while sustaining a business model for the long term. With these factors in mind, the introduction of the cab-over truck is on track," said Glenn Ellis, Vice President of Marketing for Hino Trucks.

The first diesel cab-over trucks will arrive to Hino dealers in August. Due to a limited supply of initial diesel-electric hybrid cab-over trucks, the release of these vehicles will begin in the state of California in September. As more product becomes available in early 2013, a staged roll out for the remaining markets will be implemented.

Both COE models feature an ergonomically friendly wide cab with a North American standard 33- inch frame rail width, a 56,900 PSI frame, and a standard center mounted rear fuel tank. The cab’s styling emphasizes aerodynamics and visibility with an angled windshield, narrow pillars and rounded-radius curves. Inside, the new cab uses its increased width to provide room for drivers up to 6 ft. 6 in. tall, seating for three and a versatile mobile workspace with a variety of organizational storage options.

In addition to a Diesel-Electric Hybrid option, the 195 model meets EPA 2010 emission regulations by utilizing an optimized SCR system - with no credits required. For Hino Trucks, the ability to meet strict emissions and fuel efficiency guidelines affordably without compromising driving power and performance is important.

Designed from the ground-up for the U.S. with the benefit of six generations of technology evolution and more than 10,000 production vehicles already on the road around the world - solidifies Hino as the leader in commercial truck diesel-electric hybrid technology. Hino’s diesel-electric COE model stackup from both an environmental and a financial standpoint - the only commercial diesel-electric COE in the market to do so

The History of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

In part two of our CNG Now! education series, we take a look at the history of natural gas as a transportation fuel. Believe it or not, CNG has been used to power engines since 1860. Even though demand tapered off in the United States after the 1930s, compressed natural gas has remained a significant fuel source in South America, Europe and Asia since World War II.

Unique Landscape Body From Scelzi Enterprises

I love the idea of this unique Landscape Body from Scelzi Enterprises. What I like about it is the steel sides, but more than this, I love the 50% fold-down sections. This is great to facilitate shovel loading when needed, short loads, and gives added access to the load, whatever it may be. After all, Landscape Bodies are not always used as Landscape Bodies, if you know what I mean. This also has a built in tarp. It's a necessity, not an option. This unit also has a Rugby hoist, lots of tie down points under the body and swing-away steel gates that can pin to the sides to open fully as shown.

Another Interesting Body With Loads Of Storage

Kimberly at Harbor Truck Bodies sent me a unique body they recently built. I call it a flatbed seriously trying to be a mechanic's body or service body. So, let's look it over. It starts with a 12' flatbed with diamond plate steel floor, then what looks like a service body put on top of the flatbed is a series of three boxes on each side that are very much service body compartments welded together. These boxes have shelves and there is a huge volume of storage available here. Then, there is an underbody box with more storage.

There is also a full length rack that extends to the front bumper for full support to carry extra long items. Notice the expanded metal stop at the front. There is also a tailgate section, a short work platform on the rear. Last there is a unique set of open steel boxes at the back of the flatbed underneath and make use of previously wasted space. All of this mounted on a Ford F350 84" CA chassis.

What Does A Work Truck Look Like?

As I was out for a long morning walk and going through an area where some new homes were being built, I was struck by the difference between these two obviously working work trucks. The upper photo with the import truck extra cab with the rack is so typical in these kind of construction venues, but the other one forced me to stop and notice and appreciate how I can only imagine the owner of this truck thinks about the way he or she approaches their work. I would say with fun! With style. With flair. With joy. With comfort.

What a work truck looks like is a fluid idea and I was so appreciating this person's point of view!

    No tipping, please

    Liftgate safety
Whenever you operate a liftgate, you should be aware of these safety rules. You should also train anyone else on your staff who might possibly operate the liftgate to learn the same rules.

    • Know the maximum weight the liftgate is capable of lifting (according to the liftgate manufacturer's specifications).
    • Ask your body builder or local Mitsubishi Fuso dealer to calculate the maximum load you can safely place on the liftgate when the truck is empty, without tipping the truck.
    • Know the weight of the load being lifted, and its approximate center of gravity. Never exceed the maximum weights identified in #1 and #2 above.
    • Always move the load off the liftgate and push the cargo forward into the truck as far as possible before lowering the liftgate for another load.

If you have any questions about liftgate safety or use, consult your body builder or liftgate supplier.

Isuzu businesses become partners in FTA’s Van Excellence accreditation scheme

Isuzu Truck (UK) – the distributor of light and heavy commercial vehicles – and Isuzu UK – the importer of the Isuzu D-Max pick-up – have joined forces with four other manufacturers to become partners of ‘Van Excellence’, the award winning accreditation scheme pioneered by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to encourage high standards of van operation and driving.

As Keith Child, marketing director at Isuzu Truck explains, "With lighter weight vehicles there is much confusion and a myriad of rules and regulations regarding towing. The requirement of an Operator’s Licence and the use of tachographs are just two of the many issues that are often misunderstood. Both the Isuzu N35.150 3.5t Grafter and the Isuzu D-Max pick-up have impressive towing capabilities and there is a considerable overlap between the customers of Isuzu Truck and Isuzu UK. The combined expert knowledge and joint dealer expertise that is shared between both companies will provide invaluable input to the ongoing development of the Van Excellence programme. We want the Isuzu brand to be recognised as providers of expert advice regarding towing rules and regulations."

William Brown, General Manager at Isuzu UK, added: "I am pleased that Isuzu Truck and Isuzu UK are supporting the FTA’s efforts to raise the standards of van operators in the UK. Of the 2,431 Isuzu pick-ups bought in 2011, 80 per cent were fitted with tow bars. While every driver is responsible for their own safety and that of other road users, there is a need for drivers of commercial vehicles carrying or towing heavy loads, for example, to be equipped with the appropriate additional skills. I am confident that the Van Excellence programme will help improve the image of van drivers as its efforts to promote higher driving standards gain traction."

With its 3.5t Grafter range, Isuzu Truck has built up a substantial knowledge bank with regards to the legislation covering the use of tachographs and the towing of lightweight trailers. The vehicle’s towing capacity is market leading at 3.5 tonnes with a designed gross train weight of 7.0 tonnes - meaning it can tow a trailer weighing as much as the prime mover - 3.5 tonnes. Obviously licensing rules and tachograph regulations will apply. Plus the company’s unique approach to its customer CARE programme, operating through a progressive and experienced dealer network, will play a pivotal role in the planned work with fleet operators and the FTA.

The all-new Isuzu D-Max has a payload capacity of over 1,000 kgs and a braked towing capacity of 3,000 kgs*. And it is the first Isuzu pick-up that can be fitted with an integrated tachograph. Isuzu is unique amongst the pick-up brands in the UK to focus its sales activities on commercial customers, meaning it has developed a wealth of experience of owner-drivers and fleets in the construction, agriculture and other rural industry sectors.

Commenting on the new relationship, Mark Cartwright, FTA's head of vans and light commercial vehicles said, "We have developed a strong and supportive relationship with both Isuzu Truck and Isuzu UK during the development of the Van Excellence scheme. By becoming partners of the scheme, this allows them to demonstrate their support for van operators and their drivers as well as demonstrating their commitment to high standards of support service for accredited fleets in vehicle acquisition and the after sales market."

    * 4x4 models have a braked towing capacity of 3,000 kgs; the 4x2 single cab model has a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kgs.

Harbor Truck Bodies New Steel Contractor Body Gates. Great Looking!

Harbor Truck Bodies in Brea, California has improved the durability and the look of their already great looking Contractor Body by adding the option of these steel gates instead of the typical wood. Painted to match, it really adds to the already clean lines of the famous Harbor Contractor Body.

Notice also the Harbor standard Stainless Steel lids on the upper body boxes with the open top lids, the cantilevered forklift loadable rack leaving the rear work area free of posts and still have a full length rack. Another great feature about the rack is that Harbor's racks are bolted to the body and can be removed rather than having them permanently welded. How many times have customers wished they could temporarily remove the rack? Yet, it is every bit as strong and steady as a welded to the body rack.

Of course, the Contractor Body comes standard with all these features from Harbor:
    • Harbor-Branded and made-in house flatbed is the base of the Contractor Body
    • Tapered headboard
    • Tapered HD forklift loadable rack
    • Short contractor style gates around the rear
    • Upper bed box with standard Stainless Steel open top lid and fold-down doors
    • Under bed boxes both sides
    • Class IV receiver and trailer plug
    • Load divider at back end of upper boxes
Harbor Truck Bodies has a west coast distributor matrix on their website, plus pool trucks in southern California and Washington state. Harbor sells directly to dealers in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington and is sold through distributors in other states. Call Harbor at 800-433-9452 and visit their website at www.HTBI.net
