Independent panel of experts presents three awards to Mercedes-Benz Vans: Three Mercedes-Benz vans are named "CEP Van of the Year 2014"

  • Judges from the courier, express, and postal sectors used field tests to identify the best vans
  • The title "CEP Van of the Year 2014" goes to the Mercedes-Benz Vito and Sprinter models
  • Crosswind Assist wins innovation award in "Safety" category
Cologne/Stuttgart – Mercedes vans recently beat their respective competitors on two test routes in Germany's Bergisches Land region. The winning vehicles were the Sprinter 316 CDI and the Vito 113 CDI; both vans captured first place in their respective categories. In addition, the innovation award for safety was won by the Crosswind Assist system, which is offered exclusively by Mercedes Benz. At the award ceremony, Matthias Hindemith, Head of Sales for Mercedes Benz Vans Germany, said, "We are especially delighted to receive awards for which our customers serve as the judges. These awards demonstrate that our efforts in the areas of development, production, and service are being honored."

Panel of experts presents awards for Mercedes-Benz vans
This year was the 14th time that the Stuttgart-based ETM publishing company organized the "CEP Van of the Year" award competition. A panel of 38 professionals from the courier, express, and postal sectors (CEP) evaluated a total of 22 participating vehicles in four categories and voted to determine the winners.

Because of their daily management of their own vehicle fleets, the experts are familiar with all the demands made on the individual vans, and they put these vehicles through their paces on various test routes under real-life conditions. The assessment forms that are filled in after every test drive include the rubrics "Functionality," "Driving Comfort," "Handling," "Design," and, of course, "Economy." The drivers completed more than 600 test drives in the Bergisches Land region, covering more than 14,000 km in the process.

Title "CEP Van of the Year 2014" goes to the Mercedes-Benz Vito and Sprinter models
The Mercedes-Benz Vito outpaced its strong competitors and came out on top in the "Vans up to 3.0 t" category. As in previous years, the Vito scored particularly well with its outstanding drive system and safety features.

The Sprinter once again took first place in the "Vans up to 3.5 t" category, as it had done in the eight previous years. The vehicle impressed the judges with its outstanding safety features, fuel efficiency, and driving comfort.

The Sprinter is the world's first van to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard in all of its engine variants. The van stays within the stringent emission limits with the help of BlueTEC engine technology and an SCR system that injects AdBlue into the exhaust gas. The technology has already proven its effectiveness in more than 100,000 commercial vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.

The interaction between the highly efficient diesel engines, the optimized powertrain, the longer axle ratio, the ancillary components, and the BlueEFFICIENCY PLUS efficiency package has impressively reduced fuel consumption to as little as 6.3 l/100 km (NEDC combined).

Crosswind Assist wins innovation award in "Safety" category
Mercedes-Benz won another award for its Crosswind Assist system, which took first place in the special category "Safety."

Within the limits of what is physically possible, Crosswind Assist almost completely offsets the effects of gusts of wind on the vehicle. It greatly reduces driver stress, because motorists no longer have to steer as much against sudden gusts of wind. Crosswind Assist is based on the standard-fitted Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and is activated at speeds of 80 km/h and over.

The Sprinter is equipped with Crosswind Assist as standard. Optional safety systems for the van include Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Highbeam Assist, and Lane Keeping Assist.

Renault Trafic & Vauxhall Vivaro CV Show 2014 - Van Advisor

By Andy Salter. Courtesy of www.VanAdvisor.com
Vauxhall and Renault have given us a sneak preview of the the new Vivaro and Trafic vans ahead of their public launch at the CV Show this week.
The new vans, the result of the on-going collaboration between Renault and Opel (the owners of Vauxhall) will go on sale from early September and will be built at Luton.
While there will be some specification and, no doubt, pricing variations between the new Vauxhall and Renault light commercial vehicles, both the Vivaro and Trafic are the same vehicle, apart from the front grille and badging.
The major new innovations on the vans are the all-new exterior styling to freshen the vehicle up, a brand new interior design offering a number of practical innovations, and a new 1.6-litre diesel engine under the bonnet which is more fuel efficient and cleaner than the outgoing power line-up.

Extensive changes

According to the engineers responsible for developing the new van range, over 75% of the van has been changed, although a number of key areas have been left unaltered. For instance, the height and width dimensions of the load area in the new Vivaro and Trafic remain unchanged, ensuring van operators will be able to transfer racking from one vehicle to the other without any costly redesign.
In the driver area, the new vans are equipped with a brand new dash and binnacle layout and a host of practical features designed to suit end user needs: there’s dash mounted cradles for both smartphones and tablets, with all the requisite plug in points; a multi-function bench seat offering a surface to attach a laptop or clipboard and deep underseat storage; while a nifty convex mirror built into the passenger sun visor will assist with blind spot visibility.
The load area has been extended 11cm to ensure 8′x4′ plasterboard sections can now be accommodated, while bulkhead flaps allow planks and pipes up to 3.75m long to be carried in the short wheelbase version with the doors closed.
There’s 18 load anchor points offering multiple lashing points and Vauxhall and Renault have included an internal ladder rack as a fitment options.

Engines

A new Renault 1.6-litre, four cylinder diesel engine powers the new range, available in four power ratings of 89hp, 113hp, 119hp and 138hp which, in its two top power ratings is equipped with a twin turbo set-up designed to give maximum torque output and performance across a wide operating band. This, along with new high pressure injection technology combine to offer a very low 149g/km CO2 rating for the 138hp variant of the van – down from 180g/km from the previous best Vivaro Ecoflex model.
The van will be unveiled officially at the Birmingham CV Show this week, pricing will be announced in June and the first UK vehicles are expected to be delivered in early September.

Ranger Max Rack From Ranger Design

Announcing the Ranger Max Rack drop down ladder system! Rangers new drop down ladder rack for cargo vans is the safe choice with its REVOLUTIONARY SINGLE MOTION OPERATION. This new patent-pending product and all of its features was unveiled at the NTEA Work Truck Show, March 5-7 in Indianapolis, IN. The drop down ladder rack will be in stock and available for order FALL 2014.

You asked and we responded with the Max Rack

Drop down ladder rack for cargo vans_down position

Drop Down Ladder Rack for cargo vans_In Motion

We have received many requests over the years for a drop down ladder rack for cargo vans. Tradesmen, Upfitters and Fleet Managers were coming to Ranger with the same messages. “We need a safer drop down ladder rack”. “Drop down racks take a lot of abuse so you need to design a tough rack”. “People tend to run them (drop down racks) into things. If you ever create a drop down ladder rack make sure it is low profile”. “If your drop down rack ships as quick as the rest of your products that would be amazing”. With these comments in mind, we gave our team of engineers a clear set of objectives: – Design a rack that lowers the ladder in one easy motion – Make sure that the operator does not have to perform a secondary motion to lower the rack and is always out of the path of the descending ladder. – We want a rack that brings the ladder exceptionally low. – Sliding door must be able to open when the rack is down. – The ladder must only touch plastic when it is on the rack to prevent ladder wear.

The new Benchmark Drop Down Ladder Rack for Cargo Vans

Drop Down Ladder Rack on ProMaster

Drop Down Ladder Rack on ProMaster

Drop Down Ladder Rack on ProMaster

After thousands of hours of innovation, testing, cost analysis, redesigning and client canvassing our engineers finally had a design that was worthy of our standards. Based on feedback from pre-launch prototypes, our clients felt the drop down rack our engineers created surpassed industry expectations and functioned better than models already on the market in the following areas: SAFER: Lowering up to 50 inches in one single motion, with the operator out of the path of the descending ladder. TOUGHER: We subjected this product to harsh testing (5 year life cycle tests and military spec 108 degree Fahrenheit thermo cycling and freezing rain tests) and it passed with flying colors. We also field tested it for real-life feedback from tradesmen. FASTER: The standout feature was the ease of operation. No secondary motion was required to lower the rack. Its gas shock assisted descent made operation a quick and easy task. Be sure to visit Ranger Design during the upcoming NTEA Work Truck Show for more information on this revolutionary new drop down ladder rack system.

All-New 2015 Ford Transit Joins the Cast of History's Hit Series 'American Pickers'

  • 2015 Ford Transit joins the cast of “American Pickers” on the episode airing April 30 at 9 p.m. EDT/PDT on History
  • The durability and cargo hauling capability of Transit fit the needs of “American Pickers” as the cast crosses the country in search of forgotten relics and antiques
  • 487 cubic feet of cargo volume offers ample space to transport big finds
  • Ford is celebrating by launching a scavenger hunt across the U.S., giving 10 lucky winners the use of a 2015 Transit for two weeks
Ford Transit is joining History’s “American Pickers” as stars Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz travel around the United States, searching remote and rustic locations for classic gems that can be restored and resold.

Wolfe and Fritz will drive a 2015 Transit, a full-size van designed for commercial use, in their mission to find these relics.

“The biggest thing is, when the van is full, then we’ve got to come home. I’m interested in real estate on wheels,” Wolfe says during the episode airing April 30. “There were four or five different vehicles I was looking at, and I just keep coming back to the Ford as the better choice.”

All-New 2015 Ford Transit Joins Cast of American Pickers
“American Pickers” will use the largest Transit model – with a long wheelbase, extended body and high roof – featuring the available Ford 3.2-liter Power Stroke five-cylinder diesel engine.
The show is just one example of how Ford Transit serves the needs of small businesses and commercial fleets.

To celebrate the debut of Transit on “American Pickers,” Ford is hosting a scavenger hunt that challenges contestants to find one of 10 scale-model Transit vehicles on display in antique shops across the United States. The 10 winners get the use of a 2015 Transit for two weeks. (No purchase necessary. Promotion ends 7/1/14. Click here for details: social.ford.com/winTransit)

“We are thrilled to expand the great multi-year relationship we have with Ford,” said Peter Olsen, executive vice president of national ad sales for History. “We look forward to the Transit being part of Pickers for many years to come.”

The 2015 model year Transit – built at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant – will be available in three body lengths, two wheelbases and three roof heights; in van, wagon, chassis cab and cutaway body styles; and in XL and XLT trim levels, offering more choices than ever from a Ford commercial van.

The high-roof Transit – with best-in-class 81.5 inches of interior height – provides enough headroom for a person 6 feet 8 inches tall to stand upright in the cargo area. In some configurations, Transit offers as much as 75 percent more cargo volume than the largest E-Series, saving customers the fuel costs and time associated with having to make a second trip.

“Transit has been tested to rigorous Built Ford Tough standards, and comes equipped with great technology features like SYNC® and MyFord Touch®, and Lane-Keeping System with Driver Alert,” said Minyang Jiang, Ford brand manager for Transit, Transit Connect and E-Series.

“‘American Pickers’ fits in with the spirit of the Transit family as vehicles people can rely on to get the job done.”

The van used on “American Pickers” will feature an available rear-view camera and available Reverse Sensing System.

Chevrolet Special Service Silverado Joins Police Lineup

Silverado 1500 Crew Cab is adapted for police use

DETROIT – The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Special Service Vehicle (SSV) joins the brand’s growing police vehicle portfolio. It goes on sale this summer, offering the same capabilities, efficiency and durability as the award-winning Silverado 1500, with special features designed for police use.

The SSV package is available on Silverado 1500 Crew Cab in 1WT or 1LS trims, and includes the 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8, rated at 355 horsepower and delivering the highest EPA-rated fuel economy for a 2WD V-8 full-size pickup: 23 mpg highway. The engine is available with E85 capability. Police agencies can choose 2WD or 4WD models with the standard 6’6” pickup box or a shorter 5’8” box.
“Last year, the Silverado 1500 was awarded for its low cost of ownership, a key purchasing factor for municipalities and government agencies,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president for GM Fleet & Commercial. “The EcoTec3 engine provides the best fuel economy of any V-8 and still gives agencies the power and capability they need from a full-size pickup.”

Contented for service
The Silverado SSV is equipped with a standard 170-amp high-output alternator and 730-CCA auxiliary battery, which allows officers to operate lights, radios, computers, cameras and other equipment while parked with the engine turned off, preserving the charge of the vehicle’s primary battery. The SSV pickup also is equipped with a 110-volt outlet for equipment, and comes standard with electrical power supply for four upfitter switches located on the center stack for easy control and accessibility.

The crew cab offers a vinyl rear seat along with large rear doors for easy entry when transporting passengers. Other available interior options include front center seat delete, which provides an open center console space for police equipment, an auxiliary dome lamp and an electronic four-wheel drive switch located on the dash.

An available common key option allows municipalities to use one key to operate all of their Silverado SSVs and 2015 Tahoe police vehicles. Chevrolet will offer ship-through options for the upfit of light bars, sirens, partitions and additional aftermarket equipment.

SSV package at a glance

Standard features:
  • 5.3L EcotTec3 V-8 engine
  • Auxiliary transmission oil cooler
  • High-capacity air cleaner
  • 170-amp high-output alternator
  • 730-CCA auxiliary battery
  • 110-volt outlet
  • Four upfitter switches with electrical power supply
Available features:
  • Spotlamp – driver or driver and passenger
  • Wiring for grille, lamp and sirens
  • Flasher system for headlamps and taillamps
  • Common key package
  • Vinyl rear seats
  • Front center seat delete
  • Auxiliary dome lamp
  • Electronic four-wheel-drive switch
  • Daytime running lamps delete
  • Rear-vision camera
Silverado 1500: Proven capabilities and comfort
The 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 engine is certified at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. It combines direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing to achieve EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 mpg highway (2WD models). It’s the best fuel economy of any V-8 pickup on the market.

Silverado 1500 is also equipped with DuralifeTM brake rotors that offer up to double the service life, which can result in maintenance cost savings for municipalities.

“Nearly two-thirds of the Silverado SSV’s cab is made of high-strength steel, and inlaid triple-sealed doors create a strong, quiet mobile workspace to conduct daily business,” said Peper.

The pickup boxes have the same functionality of the consumer models, including a CornerStep bumper, built-in handholds and upper tie down hooks. Those features make it more convenient, while providing usable space for equipment that police agencies access daily.

The Chevrolet Silverado SSV comes with the industry’s best pickup coverage, including two-year/24,000-mile recommended maintenance, three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and five-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4.9 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality.
