Van drivers deliver the goods this Xmas

Mercedes Sprinter Parcelforce

According to a new report from the EU statistics agency Eurostat, Britons are the biggest internet shoppers in Europe. Apparently, more than four out of five adults have bought items from the internet, compared to just over half of adults across the EU as a whole; and it’s vans that are delivering the majority of goods to buyers’ front doors. Van drivers are becoming the face of shopping as they’re the sole visible person in the online transaction.

According to a recent Freight Transport Association’s (FTA) Van Excellence report, the home-delivery market is driven by the £52bn e-commerce market; with the annual average weekly spend in 2014 of £719m; an increase of 12 per cent compared with the previous 12 months. In five years the amount spent online in the UK has more than doubled, with the largest growth area being textiles, clothing and footwear where spending rose by 17 per cent.

“While Santa has been able to deliver Christmas in one night previously, with the massive increase in online shoppers it’s clear he’s in need of a helping-hand from the van drivers of Britain this year,” said Mark Cartwright, the FTA’s head of vans. “We live in the world’s leading e-commerce country and the need for home deliveries to be made wherever and whenever has never been higher. Vans play an essential part in delivering the goods particularly now - the busiest time of the year when consumer demand is at its peak.

“Most of the services essential to modern life are delivered by a van, but despite this the role that that these 3.6 million vehicles and their drivers play in the UK play is often overlooked.

“Millions of shoppers are taking the opportunity to buy online, in the expectation that their goods will be delivered on time as promised; as if by magic. The reality is that this is a highly complex and sophisticated process of supply chain management and operation, which results in items being delivered to the right place, at the right time. The logistics industry should be recognised and congratulated for its work not only during the festive season, but throughout the year.”

New Toyota Hilux & Proace to debut at CV Show 2016

Toyota Hilux 2015Toyota GB has confirmed to VansA2Z that it will be featuring the all-new Hilux pick-up and Proace small panel van on it’s stand at the Commercial Vehicle Show (NEC, Birmingham) in April (26 – 28). Already on sale in Thailand and Australia this will be the UK premiere of the new pick-up range.

Unveiled at simultaneous events in Bangkok and Sidney back in June (2015), the eighth generation Hilux is new from the ground-up. As yet there is no information of UK specifications, but we do know there’s a choice of two potential engines; a 160hp 2.4-litre which develops 400Nm of peak torque and a 178hp Cummins 2.8-litre unit — the same one that's going into the soon to be launched revised Land Cruiser — developing 450Nm between 1,600rpm and 2,400rpm.

We would not be surprised in the slightest if Hilux made its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show, alongside the Proace. The result of a joint-development deal with PSA Peugeot Citroën (Expert/Dispatch), there are scant details of the all-new LCVs, pictures have been released of the passenger-carrying models. All three variants will be built in northern France at PSA’s Sevel Nord plant and will feature Euro 6 diesel powertrains from the French manufacturer.

Record Number of Ford Inventions Drives Innovation in Autonomous, Connected Vehicles, Electrification, Wearables

  • 2015 Ford patent applications include a record number of inventions related to mobility for the company, including autonomous and connected vehicles, wearable devices, eBikes, navigation and ride-sharing platforms
  • Ford has increased filings for electrification patents by nearly 200 percent in the last five years and has 275 U.S. patents on EcoBoost®, with another 200 pending; Ford has more U.S. patents on gasoline turbocharged direct-injection – EcoBoost – technology than any other automaker today
  • Ford employees submitted nearly 6,000 inventions for patent consideration this year – up 36 percent from 2014
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 22, 2015 – Ford employees delivered so many new inventions this year that the company has achieved a record number of new patents as Ford Smart Mobility and other initiatives continue to accelerate the pace of innovation.

Innovators at Ford submitted nearly 6,000 new inventions in 2015, with many related to autonomous and connected vehicles, wearable devices, eBikes, navigation, ride-sharing platforms and other technologies – an increase of 36 percent from 2014. These include technologies to help autonomous vehicles detect other vehicles at obstructed intersections, technologies to alleviate range anxiety in electrified vehicles and to extend range in real-world driving. Another new invention is designed for cyclists – allowing riders to report road obstacles to help other riders.

“Our engineers and scientists are inventing ways to address mobility challenges more than ever – with more patent applications filed this year on car-sharing, wearables, bikes, cloud computing and in other areas to improve consumers’ lives inside and outside the car,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president and chief technical officer. “By hosting – and participating in – more internal hackathons and innovation labs, our employees are stepping up to show that inventing is a priority for leadership in the industry.”

As part of Ford Smart Mobility – the company’s plan to use innovation to ascend to the next level in connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience, and data and analytics – 2015’s record-breaking output of inventions features thousands of technologies that enable key advancements in connectivity, analytics, wearables, electrification and safety.

For example, a new bike system can detect bike lanes and alert cyclists of path deviations. Another one would suggest a safe vehicle speed based on nearby infrastructure, average vehicle speed and GPS data, and a new front brake light technology would improve vehicle-to-vehicle and autonomous driving-to-pedestrian communication.

“The commitment Ford has made to innovation is commendable,” said James Malackowski, chairman and CEO, Ocean Tomo, an intellectual property firm. “The strength of Ford's patent portfolio has resulted in the company being named a constituent to the Ocean Tomo 300® Patent Index for five years.” Ocean Tomo annually releases its 300 Patent Index, which is based on the value of a company’s intellectual property.
Hundreds of Ford employees all over the world are responsible for this achievement. In the past three years,

Ford employees in Asia Pacific increased invention disclosure submissions more than 140 percent, North America is up almost 100 percent and Europe saw an increase of more than 50 percent.

Recently, Ford showcased the breadth of its patent portfolio by licensing robotic test driving technology, which saves time and spares human test drivers from such physically demanding tasks as driving over curbs and through potholes to prove vehicle durability.

Patent leadership continues on efficient powertrain technologies
Ford has increased filing of electrification patents nearly 200 percent in the past five years.
In 2014, Ford filed for more than 400 patents dedicated to electrified vehicle technologies. Earlier this year, the company opened up its portfolio of electrified vehicle technology patents for licensing to competitive automakers to accelerate industry-wide research and development. Ford is a leading automaker for its inventions related to electrification.

Prior patents on technology that benefits consumers include Ford’s EcoBoost® engine lineup, which offers a combination of fuel efficiency and power to meet a wide range of driver needs. Ford has 275 U.S. patents on EcoBoost, with another 200 pending. Ford has more U.S. patents on gasoline turbocharged direct-injection – EcoBoost – technology than any other automaker today.

Inventing is an important part of Ford DNA. Henry Ford earned more than 150 patents for his inventions.

Eight States Pledge To Reduce New Gas Car Sales To Zero By 2050

Early this month eight U.S. states and five countries pledged to eliminate the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2050.

In a statement made Dec. 3, 2015 at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21) in Paris, California along with Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont pledged to ban the sale of new cars powered primarily by gasoline and diesel fuels by 2050.

“Thirteen North American and European governments announced today that they will strive to make all new passenger vehicles in their jurisdictions zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) by no later than 2050,” said a statement issued after the decision. “Achieving this will accelerate the global transition to ZEVs and could reduce transportation sector climate impacts by more than 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year by 2050, lowering global vehicle emissions by about 40 percent.”

Traditional hybrid vehicles would still be permitted under the rules proposed for 34 years in the future.

Each of the eight states has adopted California’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandates, issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

The countries of Germany, Norway, Quebec, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom also joined in on the pledge made by the International Zero-Emission Vehicle Alliance, established in 2014.

According to Alex Barnum, deputy secretary, Communications and External Affairs for the California Environmental Protection Agency, this decision however is not meant to be interpreted as a “ban.”

A few news outlets did interpret this as a “ban,” but Barnum said the goal is to push for the change by 2050 with persuasion short of a mandate. The ZEV Alliance would rather work cooperatively with stakeholders toward the long-term goal, Barnum said.

Along with the move away from new gasoline and diesel car sales, the alliance also stated it would take the following actions to promote the sales of ZEVs: provide incentives to stimulate ZEV purchases, invest in further growth of ZEV infrastructure, and implement policies requiring deployment of ZEVs.

These efforts would assist in achieving a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions more than one billion tons per year by 2050, said the ZEV Alliance.

In a similar announcement made in October, Toyota Motors Corp. stated a goal of selling only hybrid and fuel cell vehicles by 2050 in an effort to reduce emissions. Through the end of 2014, Toyota had sold over eight million hybrids across the globe, making it the world’s top seller of alternative-fuel vehicles.
It remains to be seen whether the ZEV alliance has the legal authority to impose such a sales restriction, however.

Cargo Vans: Prosperity as a Problem

We’re selling everything we can build,’ manufacturers say

‘We’re selling everything we can build,’ manufacturers say as they boost production, and they see no letup.

By Tom Berg

Ford says its full-size Transit became America’s best-selling commercial van six months after entering production last year. It replaced the venerable E-series van, though E cutaways and chassis-cabs remain in production.

Demand for cargo vans has builders scrambling to increase production.

Sales of the full-size, Euro-style Sprinter, handled by Freightliner and Mercedes-Benz dealers, have grown enough that it will be assembled here instead of being imported as knocked-down kits from Germany and reassembled at a plant near Charleston, S.C., says Volker Mornhinweg, head of M-B Vans. It will invest about $500 million to build a new van plant in the same area to supply the North American market with the next-generation Sprinter.

General Motors plans to speed up assembly lines at its Wixom, Mo., factory, where its Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana traditional full-size vans are produced. Ford Motor’s plant in Kansas City, where the Transit Euro-style full-size van is made, is adding a third shift.

Ford’s Transit represents the fast-developing trend in the U.S. toward unibody vans, which now include compacts such as its Transit Connect, as well as Ram’s ProMaster City and Nissan’s NV 200 (also sold by GM as the Chevrolet City Express). Daimler’s Sprinter arm is adding a third type here, the “mid-size” Metris, which other builders will watch closely. Its announced pricing, in the $29,000 to $32,000 range, is closer to full-size vans and that might limit its appeal, competitors think. But those prices also reflect the premium stance of the full-size Sprinter, the first Eurovan introduced to America in 2001. GM and Nissan, meanwhile, are finding that there’s plenty of life left in the body-on-frame design.

World’s first natural gas hybrid truck expected early next year

It may not have a name yet, but you’re still going to be hearing a lot more about it.

The world’s first natural gas hybrid commercial truck is expected to be available for sale in the U.S. by February 2016.

California-based companies Greenkraft and Efficient Drivetrains Inc. (EDI) worked together with a state grant to create a class four, compressed natural gas (CNG) hybrid truck that has triple the fuel mileage of a comparable CNG-only truck.

The JAC retrofitted cab-over was unveiled in early October in Downey, Ca. at an event hosted by CALSTART, a non-profit consortium of 140 member companies, fleets and agencies seeking to improve alternative transportation technology.

The plug-in hybrid, which has yet to receive a model name, is undergoing testing which will end this month. Pending certification, the vehicle is expected to go on sale by early February through Greenkraft.

“The Greenkraft CNG logistics truck in a plug-in hybrid configuration further demonstrates the versatility of EDI Drive technology, enabling the seamless replacement of the original mechanical system with EDI’s straightforward, clean power drive system,” says EDI CEO Joerg Ferchau.

“We’re thrilled to expand our solution offering and will continue to provide fleet operators with cost and performance-optimized options for electrifying their fleets.”

Lithium batteries on the truck enable it to drive 40 miles under electric power. In combination with the CNG engine, the full range is 300 miles. The plug-in charger operates on either 110 or 220 volts. Charge time for 220 volts is roughly five to six hours.

EDI Managing Partner Kristen Ferchau said the truck can be built to accept other fuels besides CNG, such as propane and diesel. Their first truck was configured to run on CNG given its lower emissions.

Because of its reduced emissions, the hybrid truck qualifies for state and federal initiatives which will off-set its cost.

EDI reports that its hybrid technology tripled the miles per gallon equivalent (GGE) of the baseline CNG-powered Greenkraft truck from approximately 9 miles per GGE to 27.

The collaboration between EDI and Greenkraft has empowered both companies to better meet mandated emission reduction goals.

“We’re very excited about our new technology partnership with Efficient Drivetrains,” says Greenkraft President George Gemayel.  “The collaboration on zero-emissions capable vehicles will be a strong offering as the commercial trucking industry battles to reduce emissions.”

EDI, based in Milpitas, Ca., offers a variety of hybrid powertrains. They built hybrid utility vehicles for California-based utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Besides providing electric power to hydraulic lifts, the trucks can supply homes with temporary power as technicians service power lines.

Greenkraft, based in Santa Ana, Ca., offers alternative commercial forward cab trucks and alternative fuel systems on various vehicles in classes 3,4,5,6 and 7. In addition to CNG and plug-in hybrid electric models, Greenkraft also produces pure electric and propane gas vehicles.

First Compressed Natural Gas and Propane-Capable 2016 Ford F-150 Rolls Off the Line at Kansas City

  • 2016 Ford F-150 with 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine offering gaseous-fuel prep option is rolling off the line at Kansas City Assembly Plant, making it the only light-duty pickup capable of running on compressed natural gas or propane
  • Ford has sold more than 60,000 vehicles prepped to run on clean, low-cost compressed natural gas and propane – six times more than all other major U.S. automakers combined – since 2009
  • Ford has the broadest portfolio of natural gas and propane offerings, including 2016 F-150 and F-Series Super Duty, Transit and Transit Connect vans and wagons
KANSAS CITY, Dec. 9, 2015 – The first 2016 Ford F-150 with the ability to run on clean-burning compressed natural gas has rolled off the assembly line, making Ford – America’s truck leader – the only manufacturer to offer a CNG/propane-capable half-ton pickup.

The 2016 Ford F-150 with 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 engine is available with a factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package that includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and piston rings so it can operate on natural gas, propane or gasoline through separate fuel systems.

“It’s exciting to see the first F-150s with the CNG/propane-prepped 5.0-liter V8 headed to customers,” said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. “Whether running on gasoline, gaseous fuel or both, the 5.0-liter V8 F-150 offers hardworking customers terrific towing and payload and now, the ability to operate on alternative fuel.”

When equipped with a bi-fuel CNG/propane engine package, the 5.0-liter V8 F-150 is capable of achieving more than 750 miles on combined tanks of gasoline and CNG, depending on tank size. The Ford F-150 with 5.0-liter V8 has an EPA-estimated rating of 22 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg combined.
Green Car Journal recently named the 2016 F-150 its 2016 Green Truck of the Year, in part due to the availability of the gaseous-fuel prep option.

CNG/LPG engine prep from the factory costs $315 before the customer chooses a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors. Upfits run approximately $6,000 to $9,500, depending on fuel tank capacity.

Ford offers broadest portfolio of CNG/propane-capable vehicles
With production of the 2016 F-150 now under way, Ford Motor Company offers eight factory-available vehicles with a gaseous-fuel prep option – more than any other North American automaker. In addition to F-150 with 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8, these include:
  • F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickup with 6.2-liter V8
  • F-350 to F-550 Super Duty chassis cab with 6.2-liter V8 or 6.8-liter V10
  • F-650 and F-750 chassis cab with 6.8-liter V10
  • F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis with 6.8-liter V10
  • Transit Connect van and wagon with 2.5-liter I-4
  • Transit van, wagon, cutaway and chassis cab with 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6
  • E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis with 6.8-liter V10
Benefits of compressed natural gas and propane
Compressed natural gas is mainly comprised of methane. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of around 3,600 psi. Approximately 85 percent of the CNG used in the United States is produced domestically.
Another benefit of this alternative fuel is cleaner emissions. A vehicle operating on CNG can reduce tailpipe CO2 emissions by approximately 20 percent compared with the same vehicle running on gasoline.

Propane autogas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas, is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases, most commonly propane and butane. Approximately 90 percent of the United States’ propane supply is produced domestically.

GM Fort Wayne Assembly Builds 7 Millionth Truck

Customer and dealer join in milestone event

ROANOKE, Ind. – General Motors’ Fort Wayne Assembly Plant built its 7 millionth pickup truck today with the customer purchasing the blue double-cab 2016 Chevrolet Silverado helping with the build.
Lee Adams, owner of Tri-State Compressed Air in Goshen, Ind., ordered the truck for his sales force from Tom Naquin Chevrolet in Elkhart, Ind. According to Naquin, Adams’ company has purchased more than 50 Chevrolet trucks and vans since 1982.

Thad Naquin, Greg Fink and Tracy McDonald from the dealership, and Bedria Purifoy, Chevrolet district sales manager, accompanied Adams to the plant for a tour and a brief time on the line alongside members of UAW Local 2209.

The production milestone came during a $1.2 billion investment at the facility, where full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks are built.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets.  GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling brands. How to set up a green fleet action plan with low-cost resources

Sustainability and putting green fleet policies into practice is an integral part of the global environmental solution; something that is now a legal requirement often regulated by new provisions. But there are also ancillary benefits:  companies project a better image if they are more eco-friendly as well as saving a great deal on fleet costs.

You might think it takes a huge amount of effort and a big budget to set up a green fleet action plan and get vehicles and staff more eco-friendly, but it is not really the case. There are some actions you can actually take without ruining yourself or spending large amounts of money, which can still bring great results.

Want to know more?

Let’s get started with our green fleet action plan!

#1 - Enjoy the benefits of GPS tracking

If you use a tracking system connected with software able to generate reports, you will gain insight into the driving style of your team, especially with regards to non-green practices that can influence the amount of emissions of your vehicles.

#2 - Reduce the use of your vehicles

You might think this literally means “downtime”, but it actually means optimising routes, making the most out of journeys and eliminating vehicle misuse—another simple way of making your fleet greener.

#3 - Avoid high environmental impact practices

Idling, dangerous driving practices and inefficiencies have to be removed—the less fuel you use, the less CO2 there will be in the atmosphere.

#4 - Do not overload your vehicles

It has to be clear for all drivers that they should only be transporting what is suitable according to their vehicle class, i.e., one vehicle to convey heavy goods and another for light commercial goods. This is not just for reasons of safety and fuel efficiency, but also to adopt the eco-driving ethic.

#5 - Let the fleet manager choose routes

With an adequate system at their disposal which can generate data from vehicles, the fleet manager will be able to choose routes that are greener and require less fuel than others. Feedback from drivers can also be essential, but the route has to be established with consideration to the data.

#6 - Ensure tyres have the correct pressure

Simple, but often forgotten… make sure vehicles have the correct tyre pressure.

Wind Energy to Power GM’s Texas Assembly Plant

Renewable power will be used to
build up to 125,000 trucks a year

Arlington Assembly produces more than 1,200 vehicles daily, including the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe; GMC Yukon and Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. The 115 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy will be enough to manufacture more than half of the plant’s annual vehicle output.

GM signed a power purchase agreement with EDP Renewables North America, a fully owned subsidiary of EDP Renovaveis, for its first U.S. wind power – 30 MW of energy from the planned 250 MW Hidalgo Wind Farm in Edinburg, Texas. Fifteen of the wind farm’s 261-foot-tall turbines will generate the energy GM will use.

Arlington Assembly expects to start using the clean power during the fourth quarter of 2016, avoiding about $2.8 million in energy costs annually. Over the course of the 14-year deal, GM will avoid more than 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions – equivalent to the emissions of 112 million gallons of gasoline consumed.

“Our investment is helping accelerate the proliferation of clean energy in Texas and the use of wind as a reliable, renewable source of energy,” said Jim DeLuca, GM executive vice president of Global Manufacturing. “Our sustainable manufacturing mindset benefits the communities in which we operate across the globe.”

“We are pleased to enter into this agreement with General Motors and look forward to providing clean and more economical energy for GM’s Arlington Assembly plant in the coming years,” said EDP Renewables North America CEO Gabriel Alonso.

Renewable energy complements a robust energy efficiency program at the plant. Arlington Assembly recently met the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry by reducing the energy intensity of its operations by 10 percent in five years – the second time it met the challenge. Arlington Assembly also is investing in a new paint shop that will use half the energy of the system it will replace.

Beginning in the first quarter of 2016, wind energy will help power three GM Mexico facilities. Once on line, the company will exceed its commitment to use 125 MW of renewable energy by 2020. GM’s investments in renewable energy to date have yielded nearly $80 million in savings.

Ford Accelerates Expansion of Electrified Vehicle Battery Research and Development, Benefiting Customers Worldwide

  • Ford is expanding its global battery research and development footprint for electrified vehicles this year, adding research and engineering capabilities in Europe and Asia to take advantage of new market opportunities

  • The company has invested in a world-class battery research and development facility at the University of Michigan to accelerate advanced battery research and development

  • Ford is the top seller of plug-in hybrid vehicles and second in total sales of  electrified vehicles in America and has recently expanded its offerings in growing markets, including China, Taiwan and Korea

DEARBORN, MICH., Dec. 10, 2015 – Ford is expanding its electrified vehicles research and development program in Europe and Asia this year, creating a “hub and spoke” system that allows the global team to further accelerate battery technology and take advantage of market-specific opportunities.
The global expansion also allows Ford’s Electrified Powertrain Engineering teams to share common technologies and test batteries virtually, in real time, to develop new technology faster while reducing the need for costly prototypes.

Ford – the top seller of plug-in hybrid vehicles and second largest electrified vehicle seller in the U.S. – continues investing in electrified vehicle technology, research and development teams.
This year, for instance, Ford expanded its Electrified Powertrain Engineering (EPE) program in Dearborn to focus on developing new and innovative technologies for electrified vehicles by hiring more than 120 additional electrified vehicle engineers and moving the EPE team into its own dedicated facility, Ford Engineering Laboratory.

The expanded engineering capabilities enabled by the Ford Engineering Laboratory allow the team to control a network of world class facilities in China, England, Germany, and the U.S. Through this network, the EPE team will take advantage of globally connected technologies to develop lighter and more durable EV batteries.

Ford also is expanding in China and Europe to accelerate battery technology research and development for new markets. By using an innovative hardware and software system called HIL, or Hardware-in-the-Loop, the global team can test battery technology and control system hardware in a virtual environment to simulate how batteries and control modules would behave in different – often punishing – environments in any part of the world.

Testing of batteries across a range of temperatures and charge/discharge cycling conditions is important for determining how quickly a battery could degrade in different parts of the world.
The global Ford team has used temperature testing extensively for more than a decade as part of its production battery design and validation process. Through testing, Ford has been able to develop more durable batteries that can survive extreme cold and hot temperatures.

“Batteries are the life force of any EV, and we have been committed to growing our leadership in battery research and development for more than 15 years,” said Kevin Layden, director, Ford Electrification Programs. “Battery technology has evolved rapidly since we launched our first volume electrified product, the Ford Escape Hybrid, in 2004, and we look forward to developing even better vehicle battery technology for our customers.”

The company recently expanded its offerings in growing markets, including Taiwan and Korea, where the company offers the Mondeo Hybrid. Ford also announced it is bringing the C-MAX Energi Plug-In Hybrid and the Mondeo Hybrid to China.

University of Michigan Battery Lab
In October, Ford, the University of Michigan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced a new $9 million battery lab at the University of Michigan that is helping the company develop batteries that are smaller, lighter and less expensive to produce.
The state-of-the-art, small-scale manufacturing facility uses the latest battery development and research technologies to replicate the performance of full-scale production batteries, allowing for faster implementation in future production vehicles.

“The Battery Lab gives us an opportunity to test hundreds of chemistries and cell designs that can then be translated into the production line,” said Ted Miller, senior manager of energy storage strategy and Research. “This is truly a world-class environment for Ford to develop and test industry-leading battery technology.”

Five Ford Transit Connect Vans Donated to Help Feed those in Need, from FL to AZ

Ford is helping to ensure more people have enough to eat this holiday season by donating five Transit Connect cargo vans to organizations that provide hunger relief services.

Ford is helping to ensure more people have enough to eat this holiday season by donating five Transit Connect cargo vans to organizations that provide hunger relief services.

The groups in the Kansas City, Louisville, Miami, Phoenix and Dallas metropolitan areas will use the vans to pick up food, transport it to their facilities and deliver it to recipients.

Each Transit Connect van offers 103.9 cubic feet of cargo space and is capable of carrying 1,470 pounds, which equals more than 1,100 meals per vehicle per trip.

“The first step in creating a better world is helping to fulfill the most basic needs of our neighbors,” said Janet Lawson, director, Ford Motor Company Fund. “More than 48 million Americans live in fear of going hungry each day and these vehicles will deliver meals – not just during this season of giving but throughout the year.”

The program kicks off Dec. 7 with the donation of a Transit Connect to The Salvation Army of Kansas City. The organization last year served 497,590 meals through its corps community centers, social service centers and emergency feeding units – in addition to delivering more than 27,000 meals to homebound individuals. Earlier this year, Ford worked with The Salvation Army in Washington, D.C., to outfit a larger Transit van to serve as a mobile kitchen.

Ford will donate a second Transit Connect van to Dare to Care Food Bank in Louisville on Dec. 8. Dare to Care partners with more than 300 local social service agencies to distribute food – providing more than 16 million meals in the past year...READ MORE

Chevrolet Supports Wreaths Across America

Vehicle fleet will help honor and teach
during journey to Arlington National Cemetery

DETROIT – Chevrolet will support Wreaths Across America next week as it honors America’s military heroes by helping the organization place more than 700,000 wreaths at military cemeteries across the country.

A fleet of Chevrolet vehicles provided to Wreaths Across America – including several decorated Silverados and Suburbans – will lead the Wreaths Across America journey from its Maine headquarters to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., beginning Sunday through Dec. 12.
Along the route, Chevrolet employees, dealers and volunteers will donate more than 13,000 wreaths and help the organization accomplish its mission to remember, honor and teach during several stops at local schools and community centers.

"We think it is so important to teach our younger generation that our freedoms are not free, and that the stories of our fallen and departed heroes should not be lost through the years,” said Dan Adamcheck, Chevrolet regional sales and marketing manager. “Laying those wreaths and paying tribute is a small way to show how grateful we are.”

Wreaths Across America began when Maine businessman Morrill Worcester – inspired by the power of Arlington National Cemetery during a childhood visit – began placing wreaths there in 1992 with a small group of volunteers.

Today, his vision has become a national grassroots movement to remember America’s military heroes during the holidays. In 2008, Congress unanimously passed legislation to recognize Wreaths Across America Day each December, and memorials are held to honor veterans at historic military landmarks and statehouses in nearly all 50 states.

For more information, including local opportunities to volunteer, visit WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.

In addition to its support for Wreaths Across America, Chevrolet has expanded its military discount program – normally reserved for active-duty, reserves, retired personnel and veterans within a year of discharge – to include all 23 million veterans and their spouses. The discount is available through Jan. 4, 2016. To learn more, visit ChevySalutes.com.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 115 countries and selling around 4.8 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature engaging performance, design that makes the heart beat, passive and active safety features and easy-to-use technology, all at a value.
