Natural Gas Vehicles Still A Good Bet

Oil Price Volatility Is All the More Reason to Go with Gas,
NGVAmerica Says, Making a ‘Compelling Case’ for the Fuel

The price of oil is at a level almost no one anticipated a mere six months ago, causing operators to question whether the up-front costs of natural gas are worth the investment. But the situation is, really, all the more reason to go with gas, says NGVAmerica, which has released a new white paper on the subject.

Matt Godlewski

Natural gas is a domestic fuel, still largely free from world market influence, the association says. Hence natural gas prices in North America are stable and predictable.

“Our analysis reveals a compelling case for the continued transition to natural gas-powered vehicles, especially among commercial and government fleets who are seeking long-term stability and low prices in their transportation costs,” NGVAmerica president Matt Godlewski told association members on Friday.

Pro-NGV Argument Strengthened

“We strongly believe that the recent volatility in oil only strengthens the strong long-term economic arguments associated with NGVs,” Godlewski said.

In Oil Price Volatility and the Continuing Case for Natural Gas as a Transportation Fuel, NGVAmerica looks at some of the key questions around the price and stability of all transportation fuels. The document “provides a historical and forward-looking perspective on oil prices, as well as those for gasoline, diesel and natural gas fuels.”

The association tackled the following questions:

  •     What is causing the decline in oil and petroleum prices?
  •     Why have oil prices declined and where is the price of oil headed over the next 12 months and in the long-term?
  •     Will diesel prices fall further, and are factors other than crude oil prices influencing its price?
  •     What is the long-term outlook for the price of all transportation fuels?
  •     Why do the strong economic advantages of natural gas remain solid over the long-term? And
What are the public policy issues that could benefit natural gas as a transportation fuel?

Still Far Lower than Diesel

“Boom and bust in the oil industry is nothing new,” NGVAmerica notes. But the association, taking into account such factors as the price of oil versus natural gas on a BTU basis, projected fuel-price differentials, and U.S. refinery capacity (limited, which points to a continued dependence on imports for refined petroleum products), draws the following conclusions:
  •     The price at the pump for gasoline dependent depends far more on the price of crude oil than CNG depends on the price of natural gas. graphic courtesy NGVAmerica
  •     NGVAmerica points out that the price at the pump for gasoline depends far more on the price of crude oil than the price of CNG depends on the price of natural gas. American Gas Association 2014 Playbook graphic
  •     History shows that the recent decline in world crude oil prices and related gasoline and diesel prices are likely to be short-lived. Oil prices will increase as the world economy rebounds.
  •     Diesel fuel is influenced by a variety of other factors that will likely keep upward pressure on prices over the long run.
  •     On a Btu basis, natural gas still has a 3:1 price advantage over oil. At the pump, average CNG prices are currently $0.75 to $1 lower than diesel
  •     The long-term stability and low prices for natural gas relative to oil are likely to remain for many years – perhaps even decades – based on well-documented economic models.
  •     The long-term nature of fleet asset management suggests that it is prudent to continue to invest in transportation fuel portfolio diversification by transitioning more vehicles to natural gas. Fleets that have already made the investment in vehicles and infrastructure will continue to benefit from the stability of natural gas prices and their continuing economic advantage.
  •     State and federal policymakers are likely to continue to promote fuel diversity and policies that encourage use of natural gas as a transportation fuel on the road to energy security.

ISUZU TRUCKS: 26 YEARS ON TOP

For the 26th consecutive year, Isuzu Trucks have held their position on top of the Australian truck market, as at the end of December 2014.

Beginning their reign as Australia’s top selling truck brand way back in 1989; Isuzu’s popularity has steadily increased ever since, with a commitment to performance and reliability as well as an impressive after-sales track record.

For over three decades, the Isuzu brand has enjoyed fierce loyalty from its many satisfied customers, something Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Director and Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor, says has been hard-earned.

“We’re always looking for improved ways to deliver top quality products that are reliable, affordable and right for the job.

“We are of course delighted to be in a strong position again at the start of 2015, and we thank our customers for their continued support.”

According to Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) data, over 145,000 Isuzu trucks have been sold in Australia over the past 26 years, with approximately one in four trucks on Australian roads sporting the iconic Isuzu badge.

And it’s little wonder too, with Isuzu boasting a model range of over 160 variants, and offering a vehicle for just about every vocational application imaginable.

According to official Truck Industry Council (TIC) T-Mark industry reports, Isuzu finished 2014 with a total of 7,150 truck sales and just over 23 per cent market share, more than 10 per cent clear of its closest rival.

Sales volume also improved with a five per cent increase in the total number of Isuzu trucks sold, whilst the total market volume declined slightly over the same 12 month period.

As well as taking out overall sales honours, Isuzu continues to dominate the light market with a total of 3,279 units for a 37.5 per cent share, while also comfortably leading the medium market with 2,755 units for an impressive 41.7 per cent market share.

In the heavy market, Isuzu finished the year very strongly, taking out third place and achieving a 10.4 per cent share, with the company’s FY Series 8x4 proving highly popular on the sales charts.

Mr Taylor said, “We continue to be pleased with the performance of our FY range in the heavy market.  The market acceptance that this product has, in a relatively brief timeframe, is proof positive of the product and engineering strategy employed at Isuzu.

“These same qualities are evident throughout our truck range, from the NLR 200 all the way through to our heavy models.

“And whilst the Australian truck market is a particularly competitive one, we will never stop adapting to change and striving to provide the most comprehensive product range and support services to the Australian road transport industry.”

Mr Taylor said he expected truck sales to hold relatively steady in 2015, with some gradual recovery in particular market segments.

“The mining sector is in steady decline right now and the whole industry has taken a hit across the board,” Mr Taylor said.

“But with some fresh infrastructure projects on the cards in States and Territories across the country, we could hopefully see some growth in the construction sector mitigating that decline.

“And as always, we won’t rest on our laurels either. Through innovative new products, like Isuzu’s telematics packages, we’re working to further develop our after-sales offerings.”

Roush Reports Ford 6.8 Liter CARB Nod

California Certification Paves the Way
for Retrofit Sales in All 50 States

Roush CleanTech reports California Air Resources Board certification for the retrofit of all Ford 6.8-liter engine-powered, model year 2012 to 2015 vehicles to propane autogas – and says it’s the first company to receive such approval.

With California Air Resources Board certification, any 2012-2015 model year Ford E-450, F-450, F-550 (shown), F-650, F-53 and F-59 vehicle can be converted to run on propane autogas in all 50 states, says Roush CleanTech.

The CARB nod means that any 2012 through 2015 model year Ford E-450, F-450, F-550, F-650, F-53 and F-59 vehicle with the spark-ignition V-10 engine can be converted to run on propane autogas, “making it easier,” Roush says, “for U.S. fleet operators to transition to this clean-burning, domestically produced alternative fuel.”

“We’ve seen increased demand for medium-duty trucks powered by propane autogas,” Roush sales and marketing VP Todd Mouw said in a release. “These high-mileage workhorses can be converted to autogas well into their long life and still provide a smart return on investment.”

Pre-Title/New Vehicle Upfits Too

Roush continues to offer a wide range of CARB-certified, dedicated liquid propane autogas fuel systems for new-vehicle/pre-title installation too. Offerings include Ford F-series trucks and E-series vans.

“These propane autogas powered vehicles offer equivalent horsepower, torque and towing capabilities as conventionally fueled counterparts,” Roush says, noting that it remains the only Ford QVM/Qualified Vehicle Modifier for propane autogas fuel systems: “All of Roush CleanTech’s system components have been designed, developed and integrated in collaboration with Ford,” the company says.

VEOLIA ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES PUTS ISUZU FY SERIES 8X4 TO HARD WORK

Veolia Environmental Services was quick to ensure it landed Tasmania’s very first Isuzu FYH 2000 8x4 truck.

And since then, the vehicle has been put well and truly through its paces, with 73,000 kilometres already on the clock.

The new ‘twin-steer’ model was identified by the company for its impressive handling, reliability and suitability to the waste management application.

“The FY is the only Isuzu eight wheeler truck we’ve got, and it’s the first one of its kind in Tasmania – we were essentially the first ones to buy the twin steer 8x4 right off the production line, “ says James O’Brien, Veolia Maintenance Coordinator for North Tasmania.

Veolia Environmental Services provides environmental solutions in the fields of water, waste management and energy management and services the heavy industry, commercial, government and residential sectors.

The company has been operating in Tasmania as part of the national group for 35 years and has built a strong reputation for demonstrating industry-best practice and helping customers achieve their sustainability goals.

This can present a task in most environments, but it is made all the more challenging when faced with the hilly terrain of Tasmania.

Lucky for Veolia, impact driving is lessened due to the FYH 2000 Allison HD 4430 6-speed heavy duty full automatic transmission.

“There are a lot of challenges here with hills, and the automatic transmission in the FY is great compared to the manual transmission truck we were working with before, as we were constantly changing gears,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The truck also travels on gravel roads, in and out of tip sites and waste transfer stations, and we’ve found the maneuverability and turning circle of the truck is ideal for getting into tight spots.”

Veolia’s Northern Tasmania team currently operates 15 Isuzu trucks across the F Series range, built for hook-lift, rear-lift, pantec and liquid applications.

“I’ve been working with Isuzu products for a long time and I know the resale of the Isuzu has always been great compared to any other truck out there. When they do come up they always go for a good dollar,” he said.

“Maintenance on Isuzu trucks is cost effective and realistic, and in terms of reliability, we drive service to service and the trucks are very rarely off the road.”

in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by John F. Martin for Chevrolet)
DETROIT – The Chevrolet Colorado was named Cars.com’s Best Pickup Truck of 2015 at a ceremony during the North American International Auto Show on Tuesday evening.
“The impressive, all-new 2015 Colorado jumpstarts a category of trucks that was quickly fading away,” said Mark Williams, Cars.com pickup truck editor. “Midsize pickup trucks have long been a favorite of both Cars.com experts and truck shoppers, so we’re thrilled to see them come back to life, starting with the new Colorado.
“This truck offers shoppers a lot of bang for their buck with great features and an impressive ride, all at an affordable price.”
Said Tony Johnson, Colorado marketing manager: “Offering segment-leading capabilities and efficiency, with the latest in convenience and safety features, is our goal with the Colorado and the Cars.com’s award affirms our instincts. It is an efficiently sized, maneuverable solution for customers who want the cargo-hauling and trailering versatility of a truck without the size of a full-size pickup.”
The Colorado starts at $20,995, including destination charges, and is available in four-door extended- or crew-cab models. It offers the segment’s best horsepower and EPA-estimated fuel economy: 200 horsepower (149 kW) and up to 27 mpg highway (2WD) from a standard 2.5L I-4 – the most fuel-efficient gas pickup trucks on the road; 305 horsepower (227 kW) and 26 mpg (2WD) from an available 3.6L V-6.
V-6 models offer a segment-leading maximum trailering rating of 7,000 pounds, as well as the G80 locking rear differential, for sure-footed track in slippery conditions and when trailering.
Editors’ Note: The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price includes destination freight charge but excludes tax, title, license, dealer fees and optional equipment. Excludes other General Motors’ vehicles.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4.8 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature engaging performance, design that makes the heart beat, passive and active safety features and easy-to-use technology, all at a value. ALL-NEW FORD F-150 NAMED NORTH AMERICAN TRUCK/UTILITY OF THE YEAR

  • All-new Ford F-150 is North American Truck/Utility of the Year – as awarded by a jury of U.S. and Canadian journalists
  • 2015 Ford F-150 win marks the eighth time a Ford vehicle has been named North American Truck/Utility of the Year
  •  New F-150 – featuring the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 lineup ever – includes the highest EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of any full-size gasoline-powered pickup on the market

The 2015 Ford F-150 took home the North American Truck of the Year award today.

The all-new F-150 was picked over Chevrolet Colorado and Lincoln MKC to win the awards presented at the start of the 2015 North American International Auto Show.

“Ford is honored to be named the best among such a strong field of competitors,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “Ford employees and customers have a lot to be proud of with the innovative and award-winning F-150.”

North American Car of the Year and Truck/Utility of the Year awards recognize vehicles based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value. More than 50 veteran journalists vote for the vehicles, which must be all-new or substantially changed from the previous model to qualify for the awards.

The win by F-150 is the eighth time a Ford vehicle has won Truck/Utility of the Year. This is the 22nd year for the awards.

Toughest, smartest, most capable
The all-new F-150 is the toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 ever – boasting a military-grade, aluminum-alloy body and high-strength steel frame, and shedding up to 700 pounds for a lighter, more efficient truck than any previous F-150.

These weight savings lead to customer benefits regardless of model configuration or engine choice. The innovative new truck can tow up to 1,100 more pounds and haul up to 530 more pounds than the 2014 model, and has the highest EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of any full-size gasoline pickup on the market. When equipped with an available 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine, the new F-150 4x2 has EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. Actual mileage may vary.

Numerous groundbreaking features debuted in the all-new F-150, including these class-exclusives:

  • 360-degree camera view uses exterior cameras to create a bird’s-eye view of the truck to help drivers park, maneuver in tight spots, and navigate narrow roads and trails
  • Integrated loading ramps enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles and mowers
  • BoxLink™ combines metal brackets and custom cleats to secure a variety of accessories in the cargo box – from ramps to storage bins to bed dividers
  • Trailer hitch assist adds a new rearview camera feature that incorporates a dynamic line based on steering wheel angle in the display to help customers line up their truck and trailer with no spotter or need to exit the vehicle
  • Remote tailgate allows for tailgate to be locked, unlocked and released with the key fob

Ram Has “Turned Up the Eco” on Fullsize Truck MPGs … to 29

  • Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE increases highway MPG rating to 29
  • EcoDiesel tops next nearest competitor by 12 percent
  • 21 MPG City and 24 MPG Combined are highest EPA ratings for any pickup
  • EcoDiesel HFE will be first diesel powertrain offered in Ram 1500 Express model
January 13, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Ram Truck brand today announced that it will add a new, more fuel-efficient model to its half-ton truck lineup and further extend its claim on the industry’s highest fuel efficiency rating.

The 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE will deliver the highest fuel economy among all fullsize truck competitors -- 12 percent higher than the next-closest competitor. Its “HFE” designation is Ram’s way of highlighting this model’s excellent fuel efficiency.

Ram EcoDiesel HFE gets an EPA-certified 29 mpg highway fuel economy rating. EcoDiesel HFE’s city and combined mpgs are 21 and 24, respectively, also highest among all pickups.

“Fuel efficiency is at the top of truck buyers’ priorities, and Ram is the recognized benchmark for the industry,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand. “Twenty-nine miles per gallon cuts through the clutter. Ram invested in powertrain technologies and those are paying real dividends in the wallets of our customers.”

The fuel economy king features a unique trim package on the popular Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab four-door body, with a 6-ft. 4-in. bed and 20-inch wheels.  The Ram EcoDiesel also is available with a body-colored fascia adopted from the Ram Express model, which gives the Ram EcoDiesel HFE a sporty exterior appearance not offered on other EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500s. Class-exclusive wheel-to-wheel side steps and a tri-fold tonneau cover offer owners a double-bonus: greater functionality and best-in-class aerodynamics contributing to better fuel efficiency.

“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel delivers dominant fuel efficiency across five configurations and nine trims,” said Mike Cairns, Director – Ram Truck Engineering. “The Quad Cab is a widely purchased configuration which delivers the best aero benefit of any half-ton truck.”

Isuzu Truck UK is No 1 in the world!

This year’s team of two technicians and coach, representing Isuzu Truck (UK) Ltd, has travelled to Japan and returned home victorious. The team took part in Isuzu’s annual World Technical Competition, the I-1 Grand Prix, which was held last week in Japan, successfully fighting off the challenges from 31 other teams, representing 31 other countries from around the globe. The UK team won the world title outright for the first time ever.

Isuzu Truck UK is the first European team to have ever won this accolade. The UK trio was crowned world champions ahead of a team representing Australia in second place, with the third place going to Switzerland. Last year's winner was the team representing the home nation - Japan; however they were unable to retain their crown this year, but did finish in a very credible fourth position.
The 3-man UK title-winning team comprised of technicians Brian George, from Imperial Commercials in Glasgow, and Chris Richmond from Ferndown Commercials in Dorset. They were marshalled by the team’s experienced coach Tony Hicks, technical trainer at ITUK. The victorious UK team was accompanied to the competition by ITUK’s managing director, Pete Murphy and general manager of training, Tim Hicks.

“To win this competition at only our fifth attempt, against such experienced opposition, is an incredible achievement and our technicians fully deserve the global recognition that they will receive as world champions. It was also particularly poignant for Tony Hicks, who has been the UK team coach every year since 2010. Tony is due to retire in 2015 and this was his last attempt to win the world crown,” said his son Tim Hicks, general manager of training, Isuzu Truck UK.

The Isuzu Truck World Technical Competition is now in its ninth year and the 2014 event was the biggest in the history of the competition to date. This year, 31 teams and countries were represented, comprising a total of 93 competitors. Originally the competition was only open to teams from Asia and Oceania; but in 2010 it was opened up to all nations and that was the year that a team from ITUK first made its debut in the competition.

In front of an audience of over 700 spectators, the 2014 global technical competition comprised of a series of events covering mechanical measuring, checking serviceability and a practical assembly exercise, as well as electrical diagnostics, practical repair tests, a vehicle inspection and systems management diagnosis. The teams also underwent a grueling 25-question, written paper exam, covering general and Isuzu specific technical product knowledge.

“As always, it's a huge honour for ITUK to be invited to participate in this important worldwide event. Every year, the quality and standards required to be successful get higher and higher, as more and more countries from around the world participate in this prestigious competition. Detailed preparation, studying and practice played a key part in the UK team’s plans this year. The three-man team benefited from an extensive one-week training program prior to attending the event. This obviously paid dividends as the team went on to successfully win the world crown for the first time,” added Tim Hicks.
