Tire Maintenance: It’s Not Just Checking Tire Pressure

This truck demonstrates uneven treads on dual tires. Photo by Les Smart.

You have built a $3 to $30 million business over one or more generations, and you are making an appropriate profit most years. Do you think about liability? I bet you do, but do you relate that to tire failures and more specifically to catastrophic tire failures? What happens to your business if a worn, damaged tire fails at speed — it doesn’t even have to be high speed — and your driver loses control of your fleet vehicle and it plows into another vehicle?

If one or more of the occupants is a young to middle-aged passenger, especially a working mother or father, your liability skyrockets. I like to call this the $5 million accident. You don’t want to lose your business in the event of one of these failures just because you were lax in making sure that your tires were in good condition. Let’s see what you can do to avoid this type of situation where your tires are concerned.

Jerry Funderburk lost two Mercedes Benz cars and a Ram pickup truck last summer when Hurricane Harvey flooded his Kingwood home with five feet of water.

For months, the small business owner got by with a company car as he and his wife worked to rebuild their home and lives. With car insurance money in hand, Funderburk ventured down to the Houston Auto Show on Wednesday to check out candidates for replacement vehicles.

Isuzu Tilt Cab Benefits vs Conventional Cab Demo

Fernando Perez with Fairfield Isuzu Truck in Fairfield CA, demonstrates a few important benefits of the Isuzu Truck Tilt Cab Chassis versus the conventional cab truck. In this case, we compare an Isuzu Truck with a 12' Stakebed compared to a regular cab 8' pickup truck. They are the same overall length, so they make the same footprint, but the Isuzu Truck has 4' more cargo space because of its design. In addition, the Isuzu Truck has only a 109" wheelbase compared to 132" on the pickup. This translates to superior maneuverability and the Isuzu Truck can turn a circle inside the turning circle of the pickup. In fact, this Isuzu Truck can do a 360 degree turn in the average city street.

Snow Plow Tripping: A Comparison of the BOSS XT vs DXT

Let’s face it snow plows are bound to encounter obstacles.  Those obstacles could include manhole covers, curbs, frozen snow banks and everything in between.  If you have been snowplowing for any period of time, you could probably add a few other items to that list.  Obstructions and obstacles are one of the unavoidable dangers of snowplowing.

As such, snow plow manufacturers design and build snow plows with trip protection technology to help protect the plow and truck from damage.  The tripping mechanism works in tandem with the snow plow’s pressure relief valves that are also designed to reduce the impact caused by obstructions.  BOSS Snowplows, including the BOSS XT & DXT, are specifically designed with one of three types of tripping systems:

Trip-Edge Snow Plow:  Plows designed with a trip-edge will help reduce the impact on your plow should you hit an obstacle smaller than 6 inches high, these are commonly man-hole covers or large cracks in the pavement. When the trip-edge base angle hits these hidden obstructions, the base angle/edge of the plow trips backwards to “give way” to the object. This takes some of the force off of the entire plow, which means less impact to the plow itself, the front of your truck, and to you, the operator.  An example of a trip-edge snow plow is the BOSS Trip-Edge Super-Duty straight blade.

Full-Moldboard Trip Snow Plow:  With a full-moldboard trip snowplow, should you hit an object taller than 6 inches, the entire moldboard trips forward to cushion the impact. This greatly reduces the force on the plow and truck and helps keep you and your equipment safe.  An example of a full-moldboard trip snow plow is the BOSS XT v-plow or the BOSS Super-Duty straight blade.

Dual-Trip Snow Plow:  A plow with dual-trip protection has just what the name implies – two tripping systems.  In the case of a BOSS DXT snowplow, the plow is designed with both the trip-edge as well as the full-moldboard trip creating dual-trip protection.

As noted and reviewed above, BOSS manufactures two models of v-plows, the XT & the DXT each featuring a different trip design.  The XT v-blade is designed with a full-moldboard trip and the DXT v-blade with dual-trip protection.   One of the other main differences of these two blades is the cutting edge/base angle that is installed on new blades.  BOSS XT blades come installed with a high performance formed cutting edge while the DXT blade comes installed with a high performance trip-edge base angle that serves as the plows cutting edge until a certain wear point.  Once the trip-edge base angle on the DXT is worn down to the recommended wear point, a replacement cutting edge is bolted on and used as the wear edge.

In summary, the tripping mechanism and the wear edge are the main differences between the XT & DXT.  For a complete comparison you can view the product specification sheets:  XT | DXT.  In addition, the following video and infographic visually represents the differences between the two snowplows.

Ford Investing $11B in Vehicle Electrification

Ford will invest $11 billion in vehicle electrification, and plans to expand its current electrified vehicle portfolio to a total of 40 vehicles.

The automaker looks to increase its multi-billion dollar investment between now and 2022, and will also launch 16 battery-electric vehicles among the 40 vehicles it will release, the rest will be plug-in hybrids, Ford announced.

Ford also said it will reveal a full battery-electric performance SUV that offers at least a 300-mile range, for a 2020 launch. In addition to shfiting away from internal combustion engines, the automaker will move investments away from sedans to develop more trucks and electric-powered cars.

The $11 billion investment is more than a previously announced $4.5 billion target from Ford designed to be reached by 2020, which will include developmental costs dedicated to electric vehicle architectures, Reuters reports.

Last December, meanwhile, Ford said it was planning on introducing more than 50 new vehicles in China by 2025, which includes 15 battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars, furthering the automakers growth plan in the country. Among the new vehicles, eight are expected to be all-new SUVs.

How Nissan, NASA will help you park in the future

Nissan's remote human operator would take action if one of the automaker's driverless cars encountered a problem.

Nissan has turned to NASA to help it with what could be a challenging task in the future: remotely parking an autonomous vehicle after the driver has exited the car.

After Nissan Deputy General Manager for R&D Toshiro Muramatsu described the scenario to a group of journalists visiting the automaker’s technology center in Atsugi, Japan, I jokingly asked him why we would need rocket scientists to help us park in the future. He laughed and said its not NASA’s expertise in space travel that Nissan covets, it is the agency’s knowledge of driving an unmanned vehicle that is a long way from home.

NASA’s Visual Environment for Remote Virtual Exploration (VERVE) software, used to visualize and supervise interplanetary robots, was the starting point for Nissan’s Seamless Autonomous Mobility system or SAM.

“This is more related to the Mars Rover than rocket science. How do they navigate around an obstacle like a rock on Mars?” he said.

Part of the automaker’s move toward fully autonomous driving, what it calls Nissan Intelligent Integration, is the use of a remote human operator to help “fast track” the realization of driverless travel. Nissan’s remote human operator would take action if there was a problem or emergency encountered during the driverless car's operation.

Separately, Nissan Senior Vice President of Research and Advanced Engineering Takao Asami said that NASA’s expertise will help Nissan’s autonomous cars break the rules when necessary, such as driving in the opposing lane to get around a construction site.

“It’s common sense that you have to do this, but the machine doesn’t have the common sense,” Asami said. “To solve this, the human operator will monitor the difficulties and instruct the car on how to handle this. Once the instruction is made, we can copy it and broadcast it to all of the vehicles in the field.”

INTRODUCING THE ALL-NEW 2019 CHEVROLET SILVERADO

The all-new 2019 Silverado High Country features an exclusive front grille design with two-tone chrome and bronze finish and body-color accents, plus chrome assist steps from wheel to wheel. It also includes the power up/down tailgate as standard equipment.

Next-Gen Silverado Revealed at Chevy Truck Centennial Event
All-new 2019 Silverado builds on 100 years of Chevy Truck expertise

DALLAS — The past and future met today with the introduction of the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado at an event celebrating the first 100 years of Chevy Trucks. Many in attendance were Chevy Truck Legends members, some of the brand’s most passionate owners.

“Our owners’ passion for Chevrolet trucks is truly humbling,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America, and global head of Chevrolet. “Many of our owners depend on their trucks for work and play, personalize their trucks in astonishing ways and pass their loyalty for Chevy Trucks down from generation to generation.

“For the Chevy Truck Centennial, we wanted to recognize the customers who have made Chevrolet part of their lives, and have them help kick off the next 100 years of Chevy Trucks.”

The 2019 Silverado 1500 is all new from the ground up and leverages Chevrolet’s experience building more than 85 million dependable, long-lasting pickups. It also reflects feedback from more than 7,000 people on what they wanted in their next truck — the most customer research in the company’s history.

The 2019 Silverado’s strong, modern design advances Chevrolet’s history of industry-leading pickup design. It’s a legacy built on decades of experience with models such as the Advance Design trucks of the 1950s and the C/K series of the 1960s. Those trucks set the standard for pickup design in their eras, and currently are some of the most coveted vintage trucks on the market. The next-generation Silverado is poised to change the face of trucks again, with a breakthrough design that is unmistakably Chevrolet.

The new Silverado also delivers improved capability and performance. For example, a higher-grade alloy is used in the roll-formed, high-strength-steel bed floor, contributing to a bed that is more functional and lighter weight. This use of mixed materials and advanced manufacturing is evident throughout the Silverado, resulting in a significant reduction in total vehicle weight and improved performance in many measures.
As no two truck customers are alike, the next-gen Silverado will offer an expanded range of models, more engine/transmission combinations and more technology and convenience features to help customers find their ideal truck.

The new Silverado LT Trailboss is one of eight 2019 Silverado models. It integrates the off-road equipment of the Z71 package as well as a two-inch suspension lift. Unlike aftermarket lift kits, the Trailboss suspension is fully tested, validated and warrantied by Chevrolet.
The 2019 Silverado will make its public debut in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, exactly 100 years after the first Chevrolet trucks were delivered to customers.

6 REASONS OEMS CHOOSE VMAC AIR COMPRESSORS (AIR-ENDS)

logo-vmac-black

VMAC air compressor systems, including the rotary screw air-end component, are known globally for their performance and reliability. VMAC rotary screw compressor systems are custom built to suit a variety of applications and proven to work in the world’s harshest climates. Here are the top 6 reasons distributors for OEMs, like Caterpillar, Cummins, Ford Industrial Engines, John Deere and Lincoln Electric, use VMAC air-ends as their custom rotary screw air compressor solution.

1.       100% DUTY CYCLE
VMAC manufactures custom OEM rotary screw air compressors that can operate at 100% duty cycle, which means the supply of air is continuous. No time is wasted waiting for air, which allows for operators to complete jobs faster and be more productive than if they were using a reciprocating air compressor designed for just 25% duty cycle.

2.       HIGHER OUTPUT THAN RECIPROCATING AIR COMPRESSORS
Rotary screw air compressors offer a steady supply of air flow, resulting in a higher output of air than reciprocating air compressors can produce. VMAC rotary screw air compressors are powerful, and air-end capabilities range from 10-30 CFM, 30-70 CFM, and 70-130 CFM. This makes VMAC the best choice for OEMs with demanding applications.

3.       COMPACT
VMAC air compressors are designed to be compact, with the ability to fit into tight spaces. For many OEMs, space is a major challenge, but VMAC’s compact designs conserve space on any platform, and allow for more room to store other tools and equipment.

4.       LIGHTWEIGHT
In addition to being compact, VMAC compressors (air-ends) are lightweight. The lightweight design makes them ideal for mobile applications, and benefits include improved productivity and fuel economy—your bottom line will thank you.

5.       TECHNICAL SUPPORT
OEMs will be pleased to know that VMAC’s technical support team is available to help by phone, email, and online on the VMAC Knowledgebase. Should any challenges arise, the talented and experienced support team will be available to answer your questions, and get you back to work faster.

6.       CUSTOMIZABLE
VMAC rotary screw compressor systems can be designed to your exact specifications, allowing for a completely customizable solution. VMAC’s OEM team will work closely with your design team to ensure your customized air compressor system is exactly what you need for your industrial engine application.

VMAC OEM CUSTOM SOLUTIONS
VMAC custom air compressor solutions provide OEMs with high performing and reliable rotary screw compressors, designed specifically for your unique application. VMAC air compressors (air-ends) produce from 10-130 CFM at 100% duty cycle, and the air compressors are compact, lightweight, and customizable. Each system is backed by a superior technical support team.

Mobile Truck Repair Brainstorming To Help Breakdowns

Has this ever happened to you? You are en-route on a delivery and you get a tire blow out! I recall being downtown Winnipeg in the summer of 2004 just about half way through what ended up a 19 hour day. The great thing about Winnipeg is no matter where you are in the city, even in the winter time, you are not far from a mobile truck repair response.

What should you do when your truck breaks down? Stay with your vehicle if at all possible and make sure you focus on safety first. Don't get out of your truck if you are in traffic. Use your smart phone to find your location if you are unfamiliar with Winnipeg, search for 'mobile truck shop'. Technology is great.

There are several resources you can tap into depending on what equipment you have on the side of the road, or maybe you are stranded on Broadway in rush hour. With a laptop or smart phone you can go to TruckDown.com or just Google your location and the words 'mobile truck repair', this site is good not only in Winnipeg but all of north America.

How much can you expect to pay for a mobile heavy truck service call? Well, depending on what you need, the time of day, holiday, and so on, you can expect to pay $150 to $250 for a heavy truck service call in Winnipeg for the first 2 hours. Small trucks could cost less. A tow within the city can run you $150 to $400 or higher if you got your rig stuck in the rubbish.

How can you fix your own truck when it breaks down? Considering that there can be a thousand problems, and some tools may be too big and expensive to carry you best make notes on paper each time you get something fixed. Having a maintenance log will help, and buying tools are you need them will help reduce your truck maintenance bills.

Getting to know and trust several heavy truck shops along your route or in the Winnipeg area is key to having reliable fleet maintenance wherever you are.

When You Don't Need A Heavy Duty Truck - The GM 1/2 Ton Pick-up Box Delete!

The release of this truck to the marketplace in 2015 was a big deal as far as I'm concerned. Whereas in the past, I might have thought, the heavier duty the better just in case you ever need it, I let that go because light duty trucks make great sense in so may ways.

The GMC 1500 (1/2-ton) Box Delete, which isn't a true cab chassis, but you could call it that nonetheless. GM has never had a box off program for 1/2-ton pickups, and now they've taken it to a whole other level by offering this unit.

For general contractors, remodelers, estimators, and a whole lot of other uses could use this truck and enjoy the benefits. Here are just some of the benefits that I see versus the heavier duty 3/4-ton and 1-ton models. One, lower initial cost. Two, lower maintenance costs; such as brakes and tires are smaller and less, and more. Three--and this is a really big deal--it is lower to the ground so it's easier to get in and out of. Four, smaller engine and lighter weight, equals better fuel economy, Five, it looks more like a pickup truck. Six--and this might be the biggest deal--it rides so much smoother than those big trucks do. And, there's more, but those are the big ones that I see.

GM has beefed up the rear axle to help have more capacity and stability too. They didn't just take a 1/2-ton and take the pickup box off. Instead, they gave this some careful thought.

This chassis would be great with a number of different bodies, but we've never really had a 1/2-ton service body combination available before. This one is shown with a Harbor low-pro service body that Harbor has designed specifically for this chassis with some weight saving features.

This unit would be easy to overload, so it is not designed for the riggers of the 3/4-ton heavy duty and 1-ton work loads, but if you only need to carry a few tools, some parts and things and you like a nice ride as well, this combination might be calling your name!

This unit is a GMC that I found at Dow Lewis GMC in Yuba City CA. See them at http://www.dowlewistrucks.com. It is also available for the Chevrolet.

The Transportation Sector’s Near Zero Emission Future is Dawning

Greenkraft facility in Santa Ana building near-zero emission trucks

The U.S. transportation market continues to innovate with the proliferation of near zero emission technologies. These advancements, combined with advancements from the electric vehicle sector, will continue to push the transportation market towards a cleaner future.

Near zero emission technology advancements will play an extremely important role in the achievement of nearly every major public policy having to do with transportation, air quality, and energy. Tackling emissions from the transportation sector are a necessity considering that more than 50% of Americans are exposed to unhealthy air, putting them at greater risk for asthma, lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and premature death. In areas with the most severe air quality problems, achieving healthy air quality will require a transition of heavy-duty vehicles to ones that emit zero or near-zero emissions.

Tomorrow’s Engine Technology Available Today
In recent months, we have seen headline after headline announcing new ultra-clean vehicle technology.

Advanced clean heavy-duty vehicles are geared up to transform the nation’s fleet.

Most recently, Greenkraft Inc., a California-based manufacturer of alternative fuel systems and trucks,  certified its 8 liter V8 fuel-injected engine at a NOx emissions standard of 0.02 g/bhp-hr, which is 90% cleaner than the current emissions standard set by the California Air Resources Board. The engine works with three different fuel types – compressed natural gas (CNG), propane autogas (LPG), and gasoline. This is the first engine to be certified at near-zero NOx emissions on three different fuels. Greenkraft offers the engine as a standalone product or in one of Greenkraft’s heavy-duty commercial trucks.

Earlier this year, Michigan-based ROUSH CleanTech certified its 6.8 liter V10 propane engine to 0.05 g/bhp-hr, which is 75% cleaner than the current emissions standard. These engines are now being installed in Type C Blue Bird Vision school buses and Class 4 to Class 7 Ford commercial trucks and step vans. According to Blue Bird, their propane school bus is the industry leader for lowest total cost of ownership and hassle-free maintenance, while creating a cleaner and safer environment.

Back in 2015, Cummins Westport started this ultra-clean engine trend with a certification of an 8.9 liter engine to 0.02 g/bhp-hr, referred to as the ISL G Near Zero. In addition to the dramatic 90% reduction in NOx compared to even the cleanest of engines, the near zero emission Cummins Westport engine features Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) capable of reducing engine related methane emissions by 70%. The company expects to certify a 12 liter version of their near zero emission engine in 2018, the ISX12N, and a 6 liter product, the B6.7N, soon thereafter.

Advanced Technologies on the Horizon
While near-zero emission technologies may be further down the path of commercial maturity, the market momentum for medium- and heavy-duty electric-drive technologies has continued to grow as evidenced by the recent onslaught of headlines from OEMs that are developing and commercializing products in response to increasing market demand in California and beyond.

Daimler, Mitsubishi Fuso, Navistar, and Peterbilt unveiled electric products in recent months. Companies like ADOMANI, BYD, and Motiv offer electric powertrains for several medium- and heavy-duty commercial applications. Tesla recently unveiled a battery-electric Class 8 long-haul truck. Start-up Nikola Motor Co. is developing a hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrain for long haul trucks, and Toyota Motor Co. recently unveiled a working prototype fuel cell drayage truck.

Creating Markets to Support a Zero and Near Zero Emission Future
These engine technologies are becoming a reality, but to incite their widespread deployment, supporting markets and economics must be created. Fortunately, the timing is perfect – Volkswagen’s $2.925 billion in clean transportation funding looms close as states expect to open their first rounds of funding in 2018. As these funds must be used to deliver cost-effective NOx reductions, near-zero and zero emission engine technologies pose a viable solution to a future with cleaner air.

The combination of commercial availability from major OEMs, diverse technology options, environmental benefits, and the response from local regulations, advanced clean heavy-duty vehicles are geared up to transform the nation’s fleet.

NEXT-GEN SILVERADO REVEALED AT CHEVY TRUCK CENTENNIAL EVENT

All-new 2019 Silverado builds on
100 years of Chevy Truck expertise
