Action Hero: New 2019 Ford Edge ST Displays Performance Chops to Help Capture High-Speed Hollywood Chase Scenes

  • Ford teams with camera car company Pursuit Systems to create one-of-a-kind Edge ST camera car to capture high-speed Hollywood chase scenes for movies and commercials
  • New Edge ST – the first SUV from the Ford Performance team – delivers the driving dynamics needed to keep pace with the action and the interior space needed to accommodate a film director, crew and equipment
  • Discussions underway to use Edge ST camera car to help create upcoming feature films
DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 26, 2018 – Lights. Camera. The new Ford Edge ST will capture the action.

Ford has teamed up with camera car company Pursuit Systems to leverage Edge ST’s combination of performance and utility. Together, Ford and Pursuit have built an Edge ST camera car designed to film high-speed chase scenes and other hard-to-capture action footage for upcoming movies and commercial projects.

Camera cars are high-performance vehicles capable of supporting a remote-controlled, roof-mounted crane that might weigh up to 1,000 pounds. The vehicles are often required to travel in excess of 100 mph, offer precise braking and handling, and ideally provide enough space to accommodate a film crew and equipment.

Early on, a Pursuit team traveled from its headquarters in North Hollywood to Dearborn for an initial look at the first SUV from Ford Performance. Edge ST’s versatility and capabilities immediately signaled its star power.

Features that drew the crew at Pursuit to Edge ST were its specially tuned, twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine, ST performance brake system, quick-shifting 8-speed transmission and selectable traction control – all made available in a roomy midsize SUV package.  Edge ST, available in showrooms now, is the first-ever SUV from the Ford Performance team.

“Speed, acceleration, braking, handling, even roominess – Edge ST has it all,” said Mike Johnson, racer, stunt driver and Pursuit Systems president and CEO. “Our shoots often demand a lot of the equipment we use, and especially the vehicles. In every way, Edge ST measures up.”

Transforming Edge ST into a camera car meant adding structural support to its roof to accommodate equipment, including the nearly 1,000-pound Pursuit Arm. This arm, typically equipped with a gyro-stabilized remote-control camera, can extend far away from the vehicle, giving filmmakers the ability to capture unique angles of high-speed action.

Other conversion work included:
  • Retuning the twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine to counter the weight of the crane and other film equipment
  • Adding individual-wheel air suspension to manage the weight increase
  • Adding roll cage support to protect passengers
  • Gutting the interior to accommodate film equipment
  • Adding wiring for video monitors so crew members can see footage in real-time
  • Wrapping the exterior in matte black vinyl so it doesn’t reflect in other vehicles
“We’ve never done anything like this before with an SUV because there’s never been an SUV like Edge ST in our showroom,” said Mark Grueber, Ford SUV marketing manager. “It has the performance chops and utility to keep up with fast-paced moviemaking.”

This one-of-a-kind Edge ST camera car will join the Pursuit Systems stable of high-performance vehicles, taking its place along camera cars converted from a BMW X5 M, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and a Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG. Pursuit plans to use it in future film and commercial projects.

Get The Machines And Tools To The Jobsite with a Concrete Saw Body

Here's a  great truck for Concrete Cutting contractors, a 12 foot saw body has plenty of cabinets and is backed up with an Interlift conventional liftgate. It is as functionally effective as it is good looking. Notice the huge locking compartments to keep large saw blades and other gear out of the weather and out of sight.

The liftgate serves two purposes, one being the obvious one to lift the equipment onto the bed area and the other to provide a backstop to secure the equipment in place and prevent it from rolling off the back of the bed!

Path to electrification not straight to linehaul: Mack

OAKLAND, CA – Mack Trucks continues to see a healthy future for diesel engines, even as alternatives like electrification begin to emerge.

“Diesel today, it’s performing extremely well. It’s cleaner than it’s ever been, it’s robust, it’s versatile,” said Roy Horton, director – product strategy, during a briefing in Oakland, California. As for talk about electric trucks? “It’s almost a little bit of an uphill battle there.”

Electrification is “on the bubble, and it’s something everyone is looking at,” he said, admitting that the recent unveiling of Elon Musk's Tesla Semi attracted attention. “It’s definitely going to be part of our future.” Just not for longhaul. Not right away.

Mack believes the earliest adopters of electrification will be operations with the chance to charge at a home base and not depend on general infrastructure for fuel. That includes refuse, local delivery, and public transportation fleets.

Next would be applications with fixed routes where infrastructure is established but longer ranges are less of a concern. That opens opportunities for local distribution, regional haulers, and select vocational segments.

Longhaulers would be the last to use the trucks, drawing on power from secured infrastructure.

For its part, Mack has already been working with electrification in its own right. It unveiled a range-extended LR refuse truck in 2016, and a diesel-electric hybrid drayage truck. With Siemens it is also experimenting with the idea of electric highways, with vehicles drawing on the power of wires strung along the routes. The company is producing electric buses, too.

Mack will focus on electrification where it’s “commercially viable”, stressed Jonathan Randall, Mack’s senior vice president – North American sales. As for new players such as Nikola Motors and Tesla? “Competition is good.”

Mack’s work with alternative power sources hardly ends there. It already has experience with biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen, natural gas, propane, and Dimethyl Ether (DME).

“We have, and continue to investigate, all of the viable alternatives,” Horton said.

“Mack is well-positioned, no matter which way the market goes.”

Snow Foe MTP medium-duty trip-edge reversible plow

Light and medium-duty snow plows have traditionally serviced driveways, parking lots and cul-de-sacs. The MTP is pushing beyond the traditional scope by allowing operators to hit the streets with their clearing efforts.
For decades, Henderson has been a leader in the engineering and manufacture of heavy-duty snow plows. We’re now proud to bring this technology to the MTP, a true medium-duty trip-edge reversible plow. Key features setting the MTP apart from other medium-duty snow plows are: multiple moldboard options (orange polymer, carbon steel or stainless steel), trip-edge with adjustable torsion springs, outboard reversing cylinders, level-lift, reinforced pivot points, electric or hydraulic cab control, quick connect/disconnect and ease of maintenance. Henderson delivers heavy-duty characteristics in this very versatile medium-duty snow plow.
The MTP’s trip-edge, outboard reversing cylinders and reinforced pivot points combine for performance outside the norm for medium-duty snow plows. Operators will still enjoy the traditional tasks of clearing driveways, parking lots and cul-de-sacs. However, now they’ll also be able to assist with the clearing of streets and other major roadways.
The MTP’s level-lift feature incorporates the following: holds a level position throughout the reversing cycle, keeps the plow low and out of the operator’s line of vision (at all times) and holds the plow high enough to avoid digging into roadways while not in use.

Winter Tire Test: Some Treads Are Better Than Others

By Bruce W. Smith

Every so often I find myself checking out the tires of the vehicles around me when stopped in traffic, wondering how this or that one performs compared to the factory tires on my pickup truck. My questions become even more pointed in winter: Should I invest in a set of winter tires? Would mud tires be a good choice or all-terrain? Would it be worth the investment to buy a dedicated snow tire and run them half the year?

To find out, we went to the snow-covered hills just a few miles outside Steamboat Springs, Colo. Carved into the deep snow were three perfectly groomed snow courses with big berms and a variety of twists, turns and elevation changes. These tracks are the training grounds for the Bridgestone Winter Driving School. They also serve as the perfect location to test tires — and for us to see how popular pickup tire tread patterns compare when pitted against each other under controlled winter driving conditions.

And even though it's spring, the information we're offering here should help you decide what kind of tires you want next winter.

The Contenders
We spent two days this past winter with Woody Rogers and T.J. Campbell, product information specialists for Tire Rack, comparing popular 275/65R18 tires on a twisting, curving half-mile section of track three behind the wheel of two identical 2016 Ford F-150 4x4s. The tire comparison contenders were:

  • Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude HT OWL SL (P-metric)
  • Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 SL (P-metric)
  • Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT LT (E load range)
  • BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 RWL LT (C load range)
  • Firestone Destination MT LT (E load range)

EcoSkirt™ Semi Truck Skirt

EcoSkirt
The STEMCO EcoSkirt truck skirt improves fuel efficiency by reducing aerodynamic drag under the trailer where air hits the trailer’s rear axles. The EcoSkirt™ side fairings streamline and guide the air around the sides and to the back of the truck trailer. By combining EcoSkirt™ with the STEMCO TrailerTail®, fleets can achieve 8-12% fuel savings.

Ultra-Flex Panels.

EcoSkirt™ fairings are constructed of an ultra-durable and flexible thermoplastic composite material similar to that used in trailer scuff liners. The material’s fibers allow the panels to withstand frequent impacts with road elements such as concrete curbs, steep loading docks and ice banks. The material is also extremely lightweight for minimal payload impact.

Universal Application.

EcoSkirt technology is compatible with all trailer models and is available to be factory installed on new trailer orders or retrofitted to your existing fleet. Custom options are available for trailer applications requiring access to underside-mounted equipment such as hydraulic life-gate boxes, loading ramps and spare tire carriers.

Proven to reduce under-trailer aerodynamic drag by directing airflow smoothly to the back of the trailer.

Durability.

The EcoSkirt™ reinforced panels are designed to give with impact and return to form, resist extreme heat, cold and precipitation, and employ galvanized steel hardware for tough, corrosion-free performance, year after year.

Options.

EcoSkirt™ panels are offered in a variety of configurations to best fit your fleet profile and operating needs. Custom options, including colors, decals and shapes, are available to maximize branding visibility.

Safety.

EcoSkirt side fairings streamline the airflow under and around your semi-trailers, stabilizing your trailers and improving visibility by reducing road spray. The EcoSkirt also acts as a protective guard, mitigating the occurrence and severity of under-vehicle accidents with vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
To learn more on how much you can save with EcoSkirt™, contact a STEMCO sales representative, or call 888-283-8245.

IMPROVE YOUR AIR COMPRESSOR’S PERFORMANCE THIS WINTER

Though it may feel like summer just started, the reality is that fall is just around the corner, and with it comes the rain, frost, ice, and in most cases, snow. Now is the time to start planning and ensuring that this winter your equipment is ready to work as hard as you do in the freezing temperatures.

Think back to last year’s winter season, did your air compressor let you down in any of the following ways?

• Refused to start

• Broke down frequently

• Caused a cumbersome safety hazard while parked on the side of the road

• Required maintenance to be done standing in the truck bed or on a ladder next to your truck

• Required snow and slush to be dug out from around the deck-mounted unit so it could warm up enough to run

If any of these challenges sounded familiar, then it’s time to consider upgrading to a VMAC UNDERHOOD rotary screw air compressor. Here’s how a VMAC UNDERHOOD air compressor solves each of these issues:

RELIABILITY

VMAC UNDERHOOD70 Installed on Truck
The last thing you need when working outside in the elements is difficulty starting your equipment, or an unexpected breakdown on the jobsite. The VMAC UNDERHOOD air compressor is very reliable, and proven to operate in extreme cold conditions. Manufactured in North America in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility, VMAC air compressors and multipower systems meet high quality standards, and are backed by an industry-leading Lifetime Warranty (Limited).

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance costs are greatly reduced by investing in the UNDERHOOD air compressor as high quality aluminum parts, and few moving pieces means VMAC air compressors require less maintenance and servicing than a reciprocating air compressor. A VMAC UNDERHOOD air compressor also requires less maintenance than a hydraulic deck-mounted or engine driven air compressor because there is no hydraulic or engine-related components to maintain. To ensure the best performance, regular compressor maintenance is recommended by VMAC.

SAFETY

Above-deck air compressors can cause a major safety hazard in snowy and icy conditions. Operators have to climb into the back of a snow and ice-filled truck bed to dig out the air compressor to allow it to warm up enough to function. In addition, parking a tow-behind on the side of the road to conduct maintenance is challenging and dangerous, especially in bad weather. By having the UNDERHOOD air compressor stored safely under the hood, boots are kept on the ground, ensuring the safety of operators, and limiting OSHA and WCB concerns and claims.

COLD WEATHER STARTING

The VMAC UNDERHOOD air compressor is mounted directly on your truck’s engine, which warms up the compressor on the way to the jobsite, and keeps it warm and protected from the elements, even when temperatures drop well below freezing.

Working outside in harsh winter conditions can be challenging enough, especially when temperatures drop below freezing. The VMAC UNDERHOOD air compressor relieves common pain points that many operators suffer from each winter, from decreased productivity to unsafe working conditions. Waiting for an air compressor to warm up, climbing in the back of a slippery truck to dig out equipment, and conducting maintenance on the side of the road in dangerous driving conditions are just some of the challenges that you can take out of the equation with a VMAC UNDERHOOD air compressor. So when planning your investments for this winter, include an upgrade to a VMAC UNDERHOOD rotary screw air compressor, contact sales@vmacair.com.
