Prime Design: A Ladder Rack For All Seasons
Guest post by Ken Keller
Uptown Plumbing Heating & Cooling has been serving the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area since 1914. The Uptown Plumbing Heating Cooling technicians make an average of 150 – 200 service calls a day utilizing a fleet of 28 vehicles comprised of Ford Transit Connects and F-150 box trucks.
Chris Grant is Uptown’s Warehouse Manager. “All of our HVAC technicians drive Ford Transit Connects. They don’t need anything bigger than that,” Chris explains. “The plumbers drive both the Transit Connects and F-150 box trucks. We don’t have a lot of storage space in the Transit Connects, so we have no choice but to store our big items, such as PVC and ladders, on the roof. The rack system must enhance Uptown’s professional image for the life of the vehicle (5-year lease), be secure and easy to use.“
Chris found their ladder rack solution with the assistance of their local up-fitter, Aspen Equipment. Uptown selected Prime Design AluRack® (P/N AR1207) with two accessory items: a conduit tube carrier (P/N CON-8010) and a ladder clamp down (P/N ARC-R). The AluRack has an anodized aluminum finish. This finish resists the harsh weather conditions and road chemicals in the Twin Cities metro area.
While steel ladder rack solutions are effective at securing ladders, most quickly rust. Not only is rust an eyesore, it can adversely impact other parts of the vehicle, such as the topper, as well as the image of the business. “We’ve had steel ladder racks before. They rusted really fast, and it doesn’t look professional,” Chris said. “Image is everything to Uptown, from our uniforms, to the building we rent, to our vehicles, even to our ladder racks.“
The standard rear roller on the AluRack makes loading and unloading much easier, while the clamp down accessory keeps the ladder firmly in place. “The Conduit Carriers allow us to carry full 10 foot lengths of PVC in our Transit Connects,” Chris continues. “One of the features we love about this ladder rack is that when we step on the brakes hard, none of the product attached to the ladder rack goes flying off.”
For the installers at Aspen Equipment, the AluRack attaches to Ford’s factory mounting points eliminating the need to drill holes, reducing install time.
Prime Design's aluminum, lightweight and ergonomic ladder racks provided the best solution to fit Uptown’s needs. With rack weights ranging from 33 - 96 lbs., AluRack weighs 30% less than a similarly configured steel rack, allowing you to carry more cargo without jeopardizing OEM roof capacity. The crossbar is aerodynamic and reduces wind resistance.

Chevrolet Colorado Resets the Bar for Midsize Segment
Chevrolet Colorado Resets the Bar for
Midsize Segment
2017 model updated with all-new V-6 and class-exclusive eight-speed automatic
Midsize Segment
2017 model updated with all-new V-6 and class-exclusive eight-speed automatic
DETROIT – For 2017, the Chevrolet Colorado offers an all-new V-6 engine and class-exclusive eight-speed automatic. It is the latest major update for Colorado, which entered the market for model year 2015. Chevrolet is on track to sell more than 160,000 Colorados in the first 24 months on the market, reigniting the midsize segment.
“Customers made the Colorado an overnight success and it remains one of the industry’s hottest-selling products,” said Anita Burke, Colorado chief engineer. “That fast success has justified our continued investment in midsize pickups, introducing new features for our customers such as the class-exclusive diesel engine, advanced technologies like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and now a class-leading V-6 and eight-speed automatic powertrain combination.”
Class-exclusive powertrain combination
The most significant update for the 2017 Colorado is an all-new V-6 engine and eight-speed transmission, creating a combination that’s unmatched in the midsize segment.
According to Stan Ludlow, chief engineer for the 2017 Colorado, the engine and transmission were calibrated to emphasize performance and refinement while optimizing fuel economy: “The Colorado is currently the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in America, with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway when equipped with the diesel engine. As such, for the new V-6 and eight-speed combination we focused on improving everyday driving performance. Drivers will immediately notice that it pulls harder when accelerating from a stop or passing on the highway; it is more confident pulling a trailer up a steep grade and it is more refined cruising at a constant highway speed.”
This second generation of Chevrolet’s double-overhead-cam engine architecture retains the same 3.6L displacement as before, with an updated suite of advanced engine technologies. This includes improved variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, improved direct injection and for the first time, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), which disables two cylinders under light throttle applications. Horsepower and torque increase to an SAE-certified 308 hp (230 kW) at 6,800 rpm and 275 lb-ft (373 nM) at 4,000 rpm.
The engine is mated to the class-exclusive eight-speed automatic. The GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L45 is roughly the same size and weight as the 6L80 six-speed automatic it replaces. However, the eight-speed automatic offers a wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread than the 6L80 transmission’s 6.0 ratio. This results in a numerically higher first gear ratio, helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering, and numerically lower rear axle ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway for improved efficiency.
Extensive use of aluminum and magnesium, combined with similar packaging to the outgoing 6L80 transmission, equates to no increase in overall weight for Colorado models equipped with the new 8L45 transmission.
The 2017 model year updates, including the new V-6 and eight-speed combination, will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.
Two years of sales and awards success
After two years on the market, the Colorado has proven to be a smart bet:
- Chevrolet is on track to sell more than 160,000 Colorados in the first 24 months on the market (September 2014 through August 2016)
- Today, Colorado accounts for 23 percent of the midsize segment
- Since the Colorado was introduced, the total midsize segment has nearly doubled, from 1.5 percent of total vehicle sales in 2014 to 2.4 percent of total sales in the 2016 calendar year
- Averaging 36 days to turn, Colorado remains one of the fastest-selling vehicles in the segment
- Colorado has been the most awarded midsize pickup over the past two years, including earning back-to-back Motor Trend Truck of the Year awards
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 115 countries and selling more than 4.0 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature engaging performance, design that makes the heart beat, passive and active safety features and easy-to-use technology, all at a value. Massive Range Means More Time on Road, Fewer Pit Stops: All-New Super Duty Brings Largest Fuel Tank in Segment
- All-new 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty gets a 48-gallon fuel tank on long-box Crew Cab configuration for both gasoline and diesel applications – allowing most productive Super Duty ever to spend more time on the road and less time at the pump
- New 48-gallon tank is the largest available in the heavy-duty pickup truck segment – 22 percent larger than 37.5-gallon tank in diesel-equipped 2016 Super Duty and 37 percent larger than 2016 gas-equipped truck’s 35-gallon tank
- Improved water separator filter and fuel filter design enables longer change intervals, minimizing time and money spent performing routine maintenance
Thanks to the all-new long-box Crew Cab’s longer wheelbase and wider track, the new tank fits between frame and driveshaft. It is 22 percent larger than the 2016 diesel-equipped Super Duty’s 37.5-gallon tank and 37 percent larger than the 2016 gas engine’s 35-gallon tank. Along with improved fuel economy enabled by light-weighting through the use of high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy, the all-new Super Duty’s range increases significantly.
Adding to that range is a larger-capacity diesel exhaust fluid tank for Power Stroke®-equipped Super Duty – up 2.5 gallons from the 2016 truck to 7.5 gallons for 2017. An improved fuel filter and water separator filter allow for longer change intervals to minimize time and money spent on maintenance, allowing Super Duty more time on the road getting the job done.
“We want to give our customers a more productive tool for getting the most out of their trucks,” said Brian Rathsburg, Super Duty marketing manager. “This means less downtime at the fuel pump and performing routine maintenance, and more time on the job.”
The all-new Super Duty is available fall 2016.

Adrian Steel Helps Eric Dale HVAC Organize His Mobile Business
Guest post written by Ken Keller
Eric Dale is the energetic president and owner of Eric Dale Heating & Air Conditioning based in Marshall, Michigan, delivering 24/7 service for a 30-mile radius of the Battle Creek area, with eleven field technicians and a nine van fleet. Eric Dale Heating & Air Conditioning has been providing services for residential, new construction and commercial refrigeration customers since 2005.
“We provide our field techs with the best equipment possible,” Eric said. “Our fleet includes Ford E-250’s and a mid-size Transit van. We all love the Transit and we have plans to convert the entire fleet over to all new Transit vans.”
“All of our vans are outfitted with Adrian Steel products,” Eric said. His company uses an authorized Adrian Steel upfitter: Riverside Vans in Colon, Michigan. “Riverside Vans is a great company. When we buy a new van we simply go to Adrian’s website, write down the part numbers that we want and call Riverside Vans with this information. They pick up the truck at the dealer, take it down to Colon, Michigan, install all the Adrian equipment and drop it off at my door. It couldn’t be easier.”
Some of the Adrian Steel products that Eric’s fleet uses are the Adrian drop down ladders, drawers and shelving, racks and bins, and the Adrian bulkhead and center console. Specific to the HVAC industry, Eric Dale Heating & AC uses Adrian’s refrigeration and nitrogen tank holders. “Basically we order the Adrian Plumbing Package with some of our own tweaks added with Adrian Steel’s accessories.”
The drop down latter rack is a favorite tool of his field technicians. “We like the Adrian Transit side-mounted ladder racks because you don’t need a ladder to get your ladder down. In the winter, on ice covered ground, your feet can stay on the ground when lowering the ladder,” Eric explains.
“Number one for us is Adrian’s versatility. Adrian Steel has everything we need. Because we have different sizes of vans, we are able to customize the vans to fit our individual technician’s requirements. We can make it fit what it needs to fit. Some techs may need bigger bins, more width or more spacing. You can move the shelving, racks and dividers up and down as needed. You don’t have to change out equipment or buy new shelving,” Eric said.
“Adrian Steel’s equipment is clean, strong and easy,” Eric adds. “We put a lot of weight on the shelves and they don’t fall apart. Over the years I have had at least 15 – 20 vans, and they all used Adrian products. I have never had to send anything back or use the warranty. When we sell our old vans we leave them fully Adrian equipped and have no trouble selling the vans within a week.”
Customer relations is an important part of Eric’s business and Adrian helps by giving the vans a clean, profession appearance. “All of our techs wear pressed uniforms. If they are at a residence and the van doors are open, we don’t want to have tools and parts falling out of the van. Adrian Steel Products helps us to give to our customers the impression that we are a first-class, organized and professional company.”
Eric Dale Heating & Air Conditioning has been growing its business by about 20% each year. With Eric’s fine business sense, his dedicated employees and his fleet of Adrian equipped Ford vans, there is no doubt that Eric’s company will continue this growth into the future.

VMAC launches compressor for F-650, F-750 with Triton V10
VMAC announces the launch of its latest Underhood150 rotary screw air compressor system designed for Ford F-650 and F-750 6.8-liter Triton V10 gas engine work trucks.
The announcement marks VMAC’s fourth product launch this year after the VMAC Raptair-G30 gas drive, the DTM70 PTO drive air compressor and the VMAC Underhood-Lite air compressor system, all rotary screw air compressors.
“Continually developing and expanding our product lines to meet our customers growing needs is what positions VMAC as the global leader in advanced mobile compressed air systems,” says Gordon Duval, VMAC vice president of marketing and sales.
“The addition of the Ford F-650 and F-750 expands our Underhood product range to now include the top range of Ford’s medium duty F-Series truck.”
VMAC’s Underhood system provides 100 percent duty cycle and up to 150 CFM and 175 psi and is designed to work in extreme climate conditions. The mounting kit, designed for easy installation, is engineered to fit the Ford F-650 and F-750 engine and chassis taking only a few hours to install.
“VMAC’s Underhood line of air compressors offer significant advantages in that they are much more compact and lightweight than typical mobile air compressors,” Duval states. “There is no installed deck footprint compared to up to 76 cubic feet of typical deck mounted compressors, which provides our customers with more free deck space.
“The system weighs in at a mere 200 pounds, substantially lighter than a typical utility mount system of 1,900 pounds (861 kg), and according to the Environmental Protection Agency fuel savings of up to 2 percent per 100 pounds can be achieved by reducing the GVWR.
“We’re very proud of this product announcement. It underscores our commitment to exceeding our customers’ expectations by continually evolving our advanced air solutions to help them reduce expenses, improve productivity and grow their bottom line.”

Mercedes Continues to Expand Its Van Lineup
Full-size diesel pickup trucks may be the vehicle of choice for many contractors in the building trades, but sleek, fuel-efficient Euro-style vans are coming on strong in just about every other commercial enterprise that transports goods and services. The new Mercedes-Benz Metris Worker is a prime example of one such offering.
The 2017 Metris Worker Cargo, which starts at $26,990 including destination, is the only midsize van now being offered in the U.S. It sports 186 cubic feet of cargo space (about 45 percent more than the Ford Transit Connect), and its 5,000-pound tow rating is considerably more than any other downsized work van, which includes the Chevrolet City Express, the Nissan NV200, the Ram ProMaster City and the Ford Transit Connect. The Metris Worker also fits inside a typical two-car garage, all of which bodes well for contractors who place a high value on vehicle security and accessibility to residential and commercial parking environments.

The launch of the latest Daily sees Iveco raise the bar in its sector with the introduction of features that use technology to push the boundaries of performance, raise comfort, deliver more connectivity and lower the total cost of ownership. At the heart of the new range is an extended Euro 6 engine family, including models which deliver up to eight per cent fuel savings and up to 12 per cent savings on repair and maintenance costs. The cab has been completely re-worked, significantly, increasing comfort and reducing noise by 4dB.
Iveco Daily E6 Hi-MaticThe icing on the cake is that visitors to DriveVansA2Z will be able to experience Iveco’s new Hi-Matic eight-speed automatic transmission in real-world conditions. Developed in conjunction with world renowned specialist company ZF, Hi-Matic is the same type of transmission found in premium cars manufactured by sister group companies Jeep and Maserati. It can change gear more quickly and precisely than even the best driver, needing less than 200 milliseconds for a shift, bringing what Iveco describes as ‘absolute driving pleasure’.
Key to the new model range is the revolutionary DAILY BUSINESS UP app for tablets and smartphones, taking on-board connectivity beyond the concept of infotainment and turning Daily E6 into a professional work tool with its very own app. It brings with it features such as a Driving Style Evaluation (DSE) system, Sygic professional navigation and even providing a direct link to Assistance Non-Stop, Iveco’s 24/7 roadside assistance service.

TDK Logging - Trucks, Trucks and More Trucks!
This drone tour of the TDK Logging yard and shop is amazing, what a creative way of giving us an overview of their shop and yard operations!
Did you ever see a work truck with a company name and wonder what they did? In other words, what business are they in? After seeing a video of a work truck for TDK Logging, I asked myself, what business are they in and what does TDK Logging use their service truck for? This video answers a lot of my questions, they use trucks and other heavy equipment that constantly need maintenance and repairs in the field. This means that they must have a way of getting those repairs done in outdoor locations such as remote areas with no facilities. no buildings, no lifts, no equipment, no lights, etc.
There is another video to follow this post at CTS Blog today where they do a walk-around of their service trucks explaining what the equipment is, how it's stored and what it is used for. Stay tuned for the next post on TDK Logging!
Thank you TDK Logging for sharing this with us!

Stellar announces lighter, redesigned Hooklift line
Stellar Industries announced the release of its lighter, redesigned 20,000-pound capacity Hooklift line today at WasteExpo in Las Vegas.
Stellar’s 20,000-pound capacity Hooklift is a truck-mounted hydraulic system that is capable of interchanging various bodies.
One feature that has been incorporated into the redesign of the 20,000-pound Hooklifts is the use of a plunger valve. This device stops jib movement when the Hooklift is in dump mode. The plunger valve replaces the original rotary valve, which required maintenance. Without the need to monitor and adjust a rotary valve, there is less maintenance required over the life of the Hooklift.
The Hooklift line was engineered using the latest design tools, including finite element analysis and strain gauge validation testing. Through its design and manufacturing processes, Stellar streamlined the design of the line, which reduced the weight of the Hooklift up to 100 pounds.
While all six models in the 20,000-pound Hooklift line were redesigned, all of the cylinders have remained the same, model to model. Stellar states that will prove convenient for distributors that stock cylinder seal kits.
“At Stellar we are committed to continuous product improvement in order to provide our customers with the most efficient and hardest working equipment on the market today,” says Al Kuhlman, assistant product manager for Stellar Industries.
“Our engineering staff used the latest design technology available to them to redesign a faster, lighter and extremely durable unit while making it price competitive. We’re excited for the marketplace to see it in action.”
Stellar is located at booth 1761 at WasteExpo, which is being held today through Thursday, June 9 at the Las Vegas Convention Center

Nissan Readies Single-Cab Titans for Fall
Just as promised last year, Nissan is rolling out more cab configurations and bed lengths for its full-size pickup truck lineup. Offered to better serve fleet and commercial pickup buyers, the single cab (called a regular cab by other truckmakers) will be offered in the light-duty Titan and heaveir-duty Titan XD in either S or SV entry-level trims with 4x4 or 4x2 drivelines.
Although Titans and Titan XDs will be on completely unique platforms, their wheelbase and interior design will be relatively identical. All single-cab Titans will have an 8-foot bed and 5.6-liter V-8 engine. An all-new V-6 engine choice will be added at a much later date. Titan XD single cabs will also have an 8-foot bed and a choice of two engine choices: the 5.6-liter V-8 gas or 5.0-liter V-8 Cummins turbo-diesel.
Single-cab long-bed Titans and Titan XDs will have the same gross combined weight ratings as their crew-cab counterparts, but will offer more towing and payload capacity. The single cabs will be available in late fall on model-year 2017 pickups, with King Cab models following in early 2017.

- Android Auto™ enables Google voice search, maps, music and more through steering wheel and touch screen controls
- Ford’s platform-focused approach to SYNC 3 means a fast rollout across all vehicles – with rapid deployment of new innovations via Wi-Fi over-the-air updates
DEARBORN, Mich., July 25, 2016 – Ford is expanding its SYNC 3 connectivity platform – allowing compatibility of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – throughout its entire 2017 U.S. vehicle lineup of cars, SUVs, light trucks and electrified vehicles.
Ford, using its platform-centric approach – creating a technology for its lineup versus going vehicle by vehicle – has been able to swiftly roll out SYNC 3 plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And future, over-the-air updates via Wi-Fi will help ensure it keeps up with the latest technology.
“We developed one platform – SYNC 3 – and have been able to quickly offer the technology across our lineup,” said Chuck Gray, Ford Global Director, Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering.
“Customers considering a new vehicle can now choose any 2017 model year Ford car, SUV, light truck, or electrified vehicle with SYNC 3 and be able to access their favorite apps.”
Popular nameplates like the Escape, Fusion, Mustang and Explorer are already available as 2017 model-year vehicles at dealerships and others like the F-150, Focus, Edge and all-new 2017 Super Duty will arrive later this year.
“SYNC 3 is already a major leap forward in terms of functionality, simplicity, and user experience – Ford’s promise that every new model now ships ‘Smartphone-ready’ is huge,” said Jeffrey Hannah, Director of North America for global automotive technology research firm SBD. “Ford is not taking the traditional approach of introducing Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto on a few piecemeal models or as an expensive option on luxury vehicles only. The guesswork for consumers is over – if you buy any 2017 Ford vehicle with SYNC 3, you drive off the lot with both of these innovative technologies ready to go.”
As part of Ford’s effort to present convenient, easy-to-use mobility solutions, SYNC 3 features all-new hardware and software for faster and more intuitive performance and more conversational voice recognition to help people easily connect to their smartphone and access a variety of features, including hands-free phone calls and available navigation.
Apps such as Spotify, Pandora, Ford PASS, AccuWeather and AAA member services have been added through SYNC AppLink®.
Compatible with iPhone 5 and later models, CarPlay provides a simplified way to use your iPhone interface on a car’s touch screen, giving users access to Siri voice controls, as well as Apple Maps, Apple Music, Phone, Messages, and a variety of third party apps.
Android Auto is available on devices with Android 5.0 and higher and similarly delivers Google Maps and music to a car’s screen while enabling voice controls for phone calls and messaging.
