Low-Pro Harbor WorkMaster On E350 Cutaway Packs It In

Joseph shows off a unit just built at Harbor Truck Bodies. This one is a Low-Pro Harbor WorkMaster on a single rear wheel E350 Cutaway Chassis. The Cutaway chassis has a number of advantages. First, it is lower to the ground because of the way the frame is designed. Second, this one has a very similar wheelbase to that of an 8' pickup truck, and yet this has a 10' body. This means that you can have about the same footprint, but carry much more cargo.

With the Low-Pro body, this allows entrance to almost anywhere that a regular cargo van can go, and yet, again, this has a lot of storage for parts, tools, and other equipment.

Ram Truck Announces Industry's Broadest Alignment with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2807 Towing Standards Across All Pickup Truck Segments

  • Ram Truck is the only full-size pickup truck manufacturer to adopt the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2807 towing practices in all three pickup truck segments (½-ton, ¾-ton and 1-ton)
  • Ram pickup maximum towing capacities unchanged or improved under SAE standardized J2807
  • Ram 1500 owns the top positions in pickup fuel economy and SAE affirmed towing capacity for V-6 engines
  • Ram 1500 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel with 8-speed transmission combines best-in-class fuel economy of 28 MPG with up to 9,200 lbs. of towing capacity
  • Ram 1500 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar with 8-speed transmission combines best-in-class gasoline engine fuel economy of 25 MPG with 7,600 lbs. of towing capacity
  • Ram 1500 offers SAE towing of up to 10,650 lbs. with 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 and exclusive 8-speed transmission
  • Ram 2500 Heavy Duty retains the highest level of capability with best-in-class SAE towing of 17,970 lbs. and a payload capacity of 3,970 lbs.
  • Largest displacement V-8 in the Heavy Duty segment, 6.4-liter HEMI® delivers best-in-class 410 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque and features VVT with Fuel Saver cylinder deactivation
  • Ram 3500 Heavy Duty is King of the Hill with best-in-class SAE 30,000 lbs. of towing capacity backed by 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel producing 385 horsepower and 850 lb.-ft. of torque
  • All Ram trucks feature an unsurpassed powertrain warranty – five years/100,000 miles
July 16, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Beginning with the 2015 model year, Ram will become the first automaker to adopt the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2807 standardized tow rating practices across all three fullsize pickup truck segments, including the ½-ton Ram 1500, ¾-ton Ram 2500 Heavy Duty and one-ton “King of the Hill” Ram 3500 Heavy Duty.

Ram beats the competition in the two most sought-after titles in the pickup truck market, fuel economy and SAE towing capacity, offering the most capable and most fuel efficient trucks available.

“Because our customers asked for it, every single 2015 model year pickup truck Ram sells will come with a trailer-tow rating achieved using SAE’s J2807 testing protocols,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand. “No other automaker can make that claim.”

On the heels of finalized SAE towing specifications that now include trucks up to 14,000 GVWR, Ram has validated its full pickup line with the SAE J2807 Towing Standard – the only truck maker to adopt the standard in all three pickup truck weight classes.

“Ram Truck has been preparing for integration of the SAE towing standard over the past few years and adding heavier ¾- and 1-ton trucks to the criteria gives it more teeth,” said Mike Cairns, Director – Ram Truck Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “For too long, an uneven playing field existed and towing capacities went unchecked. We’re happy to be the only pickup truck manufacturer to align with the SAE J2807 towing standard across our pickup truck lineup.”

The SAE J2807 towing standard outlines dynamic and performance criteria as it relates to a given vehicle. Examples within the standard include a number of tests while towing: 0-60 MPH time allowance, tackling the notorious Davis Dam Grade while maintaining no less than 40 MPH for single-rear-wheel trucks and 35 MPH for dual-rear-wheel trucks, a constant radius understeer test while increasing speed and a sway maneuver using aggressive steering input. The purpose is to put all trucks through the schedule of tests in which operators will likely see in the real world. SAE standards have existed in a number of other areas including engine torque and horsepower. Ram Truck is the first to adopt the official towing standard for ½-ton, ¾-ton and 1-ton trucks.

2015 Ram SAE J2807 towing capacities:

  • Ram 1500 V-6 with 3.6-liter gasoline Pentastar – Unsurpassed 7,600 pounds
  • Ram 1500 V-6 with 3.0-liter EcoDiesel – Best-in-class 9,200 pounds
  • Ram 1500 V-8 with 5.7-liter gasoline HEMI – 10,650 pounds
  • Ram 2500 V-8 with 6.4-liter gasoline HEMI – 16,300 pounds
  • Ram 2500 with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel – Best-in-class 17,970 pounds
  • Ram 3500 V-8 with 6.4-liter gasoline HEMI – 16,420 pounds
  • Ram 3500 with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel – Best-in-class 30,000 pounds

Ram Truck Brand

Creating a distinct identity for Ram Trucks has allowed the brand to concentrate on core customers and features they find valuable. Whether focusing on a family that uses a Ram 1500 day in and day out, a hard-working Ram 3500 Heavy Duty owner or a business that depends on its Ram ProMaster commercial van every day for deliveries, Ram has the truck market covered.

In order to be the best, it takes a commitment to innovation, capability, efficiency and durability. Ram Truck continues to invest substantially in its products, infusing them with great looks, refined interiors, durable engines and exclusive features that further enhance their capabilities.

Moving into the 2015 model year, Ram continues to beat the competition in the two most sought-after titles, fuel economy and towing capacity.
  • Best-in-class fuel economy with exclusive EcoDiesel – 28 mpg with Ram 1500
  • Best-in-class towing capability – 30,000 pounds with Ram 3500
Truck customers, from half-ton to commercial, have a demanding range of needs and require their vehicles to provide high levels of capability. Ram trucks are designed to deliver a total package.

Isuzu Announces New NPR-XD 16k GVWR Diesel Truck

16,000-lb. GVWR Offers More Payload Capacity
at a More Competitive Price

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., distributor of America's best-selling low cab forward trucks, has introduced the latest addition to its wide range of N-Series diesel trucks, the NPR-XD. With a gross vehicle weight rating of 16,000-lb., the NPR-XD bridges the gap between the NPR-HD, with its GVWR of 14,500-lb., and the 17,950-lb. GVWR NQR. The new model was announced as part of the continuing celebration of the 30th anniversary of Isuzu trucks in the U.S. market.

“This new diesel model meets a number of vocational applications and requirements that previously might have required moving from an NPR-HD up to the NQR,” according to Shaun Skinner, executive vice president and general manager of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “Now, the NPR-XD offers more payload capacity at an even more competitive price.”

Highlights

The NPR-XD will be offered in the same cab configurations and wheelbases as the NPR-HD: 

  • The NPR-XD standard cab will be available in 109, 132.5, 150 and 176 inch wheelbases and will provide a body/payload allowance ranging from 9,281to 9,490 lbs. 
  • The NPR-XD crew cab will be available in 150 and 176 inch wheelbases and will provide a body/payload allowance ranging from 8,711 to 8,779 lbs.

All NPR-XDs will offer 19.5-inch wheels, 225/70R-19.5F 12-ply low rolling resistance tires, a front gross axle weight rating of 6,630 lbs. and a rear GAWR of 11,020 lbs.

Every NPR-XD will be powered by the legendary Isuzu 4HK1-TC 5.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the powerplant delivers 215 horsepower and 452 lbs.-ft. of torque at 1,850 rpm. The engine carries a B10 durability of 310,000 miles—meaning that 90% of engines should reach that mileage before requiring an overhaul.

The NPR-XD is also covered by the Isuzu 24 Months/60,000 Miles Covered Maintenance Program, which has been extended until December 31, 2014. The program includes: an initial 'Dry Service' at 4,000 miles, an 'A Service' beginning at 10,000 miles and continuing every 10,000 miles, and an inclusive 'A/B Service' at 50,000 miles. Maintenance services can be obtained at any of Isuzu‟s dealerships in the U.S.

Range of Models

The Isuzu diesel truck line now includes the fuel-efficient NPR ECO-MAX, NPR-HD, new NPR-XD, NQR and NRR models, with GVWRs ranging from 12,000-lb to 19,500-lb.

In addition, Isuzu offers NPR and NPR-HD models with gasoline-powered engines, the only gas-powered low cab forward trucks available in the U.S.

Reflecting on the addition of the NPR-XD model on the occasion of Isuzu trucks 30th anniversary in the U.S. market, Skinner said, “Our goal remains unchanged: to offer our customers the most diverse line of low-cab forward trucks that provide the lowest cost of ownership in the market. The new NPR-XD will help further reach that goal.”

Tools To Help Your Trade For Truck Dealers and Body Companies

When I first got into the car business in 1972, carpet was an option in cars, power door locks was an extremely rare option and was vacuum operated. Since then, every year, more and more so called options became standard. It’s hard to find anything without air conditioning today. And though the truck that holds the truck body that we call a commercial truck has progressed in the same way as cars, the truck body that dealers order typically has not.

End users want solutions. They want to have their vehicle do more, be more cost effective, help them be more effective and efficient, and save them time, labor, and essentially solve problems. Yet, I see a lot of dealers ordering the same old service body, rack and hitch, and many of them without the rack. I think they just don’t think about options when they are ordering, so I recently developed a tool to help solve this issue and help create solutions for end users by stocking better products and to also at the same time increase profits for the dealer. Options are the key to both of these.

Rather than just reordering the same things, I developed a series of body templates that are so simple to use. All you need do is print one out, circle some things, make some check marks, and in a few cases, add some specific details. This then can be faxed, emailed, handed to, or otherwise given to body companies to get a quote, or place an order. They will work for every truck body company on the planet.

The most common bodies are covered. There are eight of them: Combo Body, Contractor Body, Dump Body, Flatbeds, Landscape Body, Plumber Style Body, Service Body, and Van Body or Dry Van. Each of these templates are specifically designed for each body and the appropriate options, sizes, etc. You don’t even have to think of options, they are already there. Plus it is so easy to use.

Some example are: On the service body, there are cargo bed enclosures (rolltops), raised cargo bed enclosures, transverse compartments, drawers, interior lighting, master locking system, electric locks, work platform, bedslider, liftgate, vise bracket, rack, rack-straps, conduit box, horizontal series, just to name a few.

When you’re twenty years old climbing in the back of the body is no big deal, but when you’re 45 it is a different experience. A bedslide changes all that.  Another is Rack-Straps. One of the easiest options in the world to sell and so useful. A raised cargo bed enclosure and bedslide keeps valuable parts and large tools out of sight and secure with convenient access. A transverse compartment with long drawers will make an 8’ service body into the equivalent of a somewhat larger body with its effective use of space. Another is a back-up camera for a plumber style body, Spitslift crane, and more. Remember simple things too like back-up alarm.

You can download the pdf of these templates free at http://comtrk.com/trainingresources.html

More Storage. Same Space For 8' Service/Utility Body

Jordan shows us a unique change to an 8' Service Body that makes it so much more useful and effective in the same space. It's not a bigger body, but a substantially more effective one. The transverse compartment is part of the magic, and then combine that with the horizontal series long horizontal compartment, add the master lock system, Harbor's push-button locking system, stainless steel lids and this changeup creates magic when it comes to functionality and effectiveness. Tommy Gate Releases All-New Tuckunder Series Liftgate

Woodbine Manufacturing Company, producer of Tommy Gate hydraulic lifts, announced today the availability of a brand-new Tuckunder Series liftgate (TKT) for flatbed, stake, and van bodies.

TKT Models, the first Tuckunder-style liftgates ever produced by Tommy Gate, incorporate a state-of-the-art, wide-arm, dual-cylinder design along with numerous installation, operation, and service features to maximize both operator and upfitter convenience.

TKT Models are initially being offered with self-leveling, wedge-style platforms (either extruded aluminum or steel treadplate), lifting capacities of 2500 or 3000 lbs., and bed extensions fitting either 96- or 102-inch-wide bodies.

Standard features include:

  • hydraulic power-down to provide quick, consistent platform deployment
  • underride impact guard to protect from vehicle underride
  • 24-inch rubber dock bumpers to protect bed extension from direct contact with dock surface
  • snubber kit to secure stored platform
  • low-profile, fixed toggle control (with five minute inactivity shut off)
  • 2-gauge, full-length power cable and ground

Throughout an extensive research and development process, the Tommy Gate engineering and customer service departments elicited mass amounts of feedback from their network of industry resources which dictated many of the TKT Models’ specifications and features.

According to Tommy Gate Senior Engineer Andrew Fitzgibbon, “[Tommy Gate] interviewed distributors and installers about what sort of things they liked, or didn’t like, about the products in the marketplace. And we talked to some end customers about how they used their gates. We also mixed in a healthy dose of taking into account our capabilities, our expertise, here at the factory and what we do well. So, we kind of mixed all three of those things together and ended up with our finished product.”

Complete product information for the Tuckunder Series may be found at the Tommy Gate webpage: www.tommygate.com. Development and operational videos may also be viewed via the Tommy Gate Youtube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/tommygateco

Located in Woodbine, Iowa, the Woodbine Manufacturing Company facility sits on the same piece of land where every Tommy Gate hydraulic lift has been produced for forty-nine years.

One-Third of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Trucks Now Run on Clean Diesel

More than one-third of all medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks registered in the U.S. are now equipped with newer technology clean diesel engines, according to data from HIS Automotive for the Diesel Technology Forum (DTF).

This means that 2.9 million of 8.8 million Class 3-8 trucks registered from 2007 through 2013 are near-zero emission vehicles. Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the DTF, says the statistic is significant considering 95% of heavy-duty trucks are run by diesel.

In 2007, 9.4% had clean diesel engines - and for 2013, it was ar 33.5%. The biggest jump, with a 4.9% increase, was from 2012 to 2013. The lowest was from 2008 to 2009, with an increase of 3.0%.

States with the highest percentage of clean diesel trucks are Indiana (50.4%), Utah (45.4%) and Oklahoma (44.8%). However, Texas, California and Indiana lead for total number of clean diesel trucks.

Under the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2007/2010 heavy-duty engine and highway diesel fuel sulfur control requirements, beginning with the 2007 model year, 100% of the new on-road diesel trucks were required to meet the near-zero particulate emissions standards.

CNG Conversions of 2015 F-250, F-350 Now Covered By Both EPA and CARB

Westport says the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has certified model-year 2015 Ford F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks with the 6.2-liter Ford engine that are fitted with dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) WiNG Power Systems.

The company had already received certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the same CNG system configurations on 2015 F-250 and F-350 trucks, as well as received CARB certification for model-year 2014 Ford F-150 pickup trucks with the 3.7-liter Ford engine and WiNG Power System.

The EPA- and CARB-certified Westport WiNG system installations performed on 2015 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks are available with a 17 GGE, 23 GGE or 27 GGE CNG tank, the company says.

The conversions are conducted through Ford's Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) program, whereby all Westport NGV conversions undergo the same safety testing required for Ford OEM products, and the original vehicle warranty remains intact following the conversion.

More information about Westport's bi-fuel and dedicated CNG vehicles is available here.

Dairy farm to produce pipeline-quality biogas

Settled in the Yakima Basin of Washington, George DeRuyter & Sons dairy has been using an anaerobic digester (AD) producing biogas for electric generation. Over the years the production has been at a meager and declining rate, driving Dan DeRuyter and his partners to explore other options. The exploration resulted in a partnership with Promus Energy LLC, a renewable energy development company, to convert GDR’s current AD system into Promus’s integrated digester-based system. The system is designed to profitably convert dairy manure of 3,150 cow equivalents and other organic wastes into revenue-generating products. These products include pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG) for transportation fuel, 3.8 tons per day of biofertilizers, 3.3 tons per day of a high-value crystalized ammonium sulfate fertilizer produced from an ammonia scrubber, a fibrous peat moss replacement at 86 cubic yards per day, and environmental credits.

Easily One Of The Most Useful Truck Bodies On The Planet

Jordan gives us a tour of one of the fastest selling truck bodies he stocks. This is the Knapheide KUV lowpro Service Body. It is often called a Plumber Body because plumbers love them, but so does most other contractors. And why not? It is a Service Body on the outside and this one has the awesome Sortimo organization system on one side. The body is just barely taller than the chassis so it gets in and out of tight spots. It is mounted on a cutaway chassis that has a very short turning radius and the low mounting height of the floor of the body. Then, inside, there are shelves with outside access, a dry place to put large items like water heaters, air conditioning units, and so much more, and finally, the capacity to get it all done. It's comfortable to drive, takes what you need to where you're going and able to work at the job site too.
