Registration is now open for the work truck industry’s leading educational forum on clean vehicle technologies, the Green Truck Summit. The Green Truck Summit kicks off the extensive educational conference at The Work Truck Show® 2013 on March 5. The Summit gives fleet managers and other industry professionals practical ideas and real-world solutions for implementing new green practices.

2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid is the Most Fuel Efficient Full-Size Pickup
Chevrolet Silverado1500 Hybrid is the most fuel efficient full-size pickup. Compared with similar non-hybrid models, it delivers 33-percent greater city fuel economy and a 23.5-percent improvement in overall fuel economy, all with the capability customers want in full-size truck – including a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) trailering capacity.
EPA Estimated fuel economy for both 2WD and 4WD models is 20 mpg in the city, 23 on the highway and 21 combined. The 20 city and 21 combined ratings are the highest of any full-size pickup, including competitors’ V-6 engines.
The Silverado 1500 Hybrid’s propulsion comes from General Motors’ patented two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L gas V-8, which combine to deliver all-electric driving up to 30 mph (48 km/h). The system saves fuel using electric propulsion, even when towing a trailer.
The Silverado Hybrid is offered in the crew cab body style on both 2WD and 4WD models, with 1HY and 2HY trim levels. All models are equipped with StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle and a trailering package. It also includes dual-stage frontal air bags, head curtain side air bags and seat-mounted side-impact air bags.
New for 2013 is a pair of exterior colors: Deep Ruby Metallic and Blue Topaz Metallic.
Hybrid system details
GM’s advanced Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS) work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology to enable the Silverado Hybrid’s efficient performance. This hybrid system not only enables the Silverado to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone, it also allows the 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical V-4 mode for longer periods.
GM designed the EVT to provide the best combination of city and highway fuel economy. Used with the Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine with Active Fuel Management, it is an all-purpose system well-suited to providing excellent economy and full-size pickup passenger-carrying, cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capabilities.
The EVT is designed to bolt directly to the standard four-wheel-drive transfer case found on the gasoline-only models for true four-wheel-drive capability. The Silverado Hybrid’s unique powertrain system comprises these major components:
- Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT)
- Energy Storage System (ESS)
- Vortec 6.0L V-8 with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC).
A sophisticated Hybrid Optimizing System constantly receives torque-based data from the powertrain and other vehicle systems, and then determines the most efficient means of propelling the vehicle — either via electric power, gasoline engine power or a combination of the two. The EVT is like having two transmissions in one — continuously variable drive for light-load conditions and fixed-ratio drive for high-load situations.
Energy storage system (ESS): A 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS) provides power to the EVT’s two electric motors. This battery pack is located under the second-row seat.
In addition to supplying power to the EVT, the ESS also provides power to the air conditioning compressor and the Accessory Power Module (APM), which converts the high-voltage supply to 42 volts for the electric power steering system, and 12 volts for the vehicle battery and other 12-volt electrical accessories.
Battery pack durability and reliability are maintained via optimized charge and discharge cycles, as well as a dedicated cooling system that draws air from the passenger compartment. As part of the vehicle’s emission control system, the ESS is warranted for eight years/100,000 miles.
Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine: Engineers chose the Vortec 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine for the Silverado Hybrid because of its favorable torque characteristics. This is especially important because GM engineers adapted the 6.0L V-8 to operate with late intake valve closing (Atkinson-cycle combustion process) for reduced pumping losses and better overall fuel economy.
Using flat-top pistons, cylinder heads borrowed from GM’s 5.3L high-output V-8 and a 10.8:1 compression ratio, the Vortec 6.0L V-8 produces 332 horsepower (248 kW) at 5100 rpm and 367 lb.-ft. of torque (495 Nm) at 4100 rpm, yet requires only regular unleaded fuel.
The Vortec 6.0L also features variable valve timing to control late intake closing, as well as Active Fuel Management, which allows four of the eight cylinders to be shut off during periods of light load. With the benefit of electric boost, the engine is able to stay in V-4 mode for longer periods in the Silverado Hybrid.
Auto Stop mode and regenerative braking
A key contributor to fuel economy is the gasoline engine’s Auto Stop mode. At vehicle speeds between 0 and 30 mph, the gasoline engine may be automatically shut down. By leaving the engine off and allowing the vehicle to move only under electric power up to 30 mph, such as during heavy stop-and-go traffic, fuel consumption is greatly reduced.
The regenerative braking system works in concert with the hydraulic braking system. The system uses a brake pedal emulator, which provides progressive resistance as the pedal is depressed. This consistent pedal feel is very much like that of a standard hydraulic braking system in operation.
Quiet performance
Silverado Hybrid matches its gasoline-only siblings in comfort and convenience, with special attention paid to acoustic details that makes for a very quiet driving experience. Examples include:
- Exhaust system and resonator specially tuned for the 6.0L LIVC engine’s Active Fuel Management operation. It ensures comfortable interior acoustics and a pleasant exhaust note during both V-4 and V-8 operation
- Additional engine intake induction tuning for reduced interior noise and pleasing sound quality
- Low-rolling resistance, “quiet-tuned” P265/65R18 tires for reduced road noise
- Electrically driven, 300-volt air conditioning compressor reduces vibration and allows the HVAC system to cool the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off
- Electrically driven, 42-volt variable-assist power steering reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems
- Energy Storage System (ESS) cooling system internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds when the fan could more easily be heard by the occupants.
- Grille with chrome surround is standard on all models
- Heated, power-operated outside mirrors including auto-dimming, integrated signal indicators, ground lights and curb-tilt feature are standard on 2HY. Heated and power-adjustable mirrors are standard on 1HY
- Spring-loaded “EZ-Lift” locking tailgate feature is standard on all models
- Body-color side moldings are standard on all models
- Eighteen-inch aluminum wheels and P265/65R18 all-season tires
- Exterior colors: Graystone Metallic, Black, Blue Granite Metallic, Summit White, Deep Ruby Metallic, Victory Red, Silver Ice Metallic, Mocha Steel Metallic and Blue Topaz Metallic.
A unique hybrid gauge cluster includes a special tachometer incorporating an Auto Stop position just above the 0 rpm mark that indicates when the gasoline engine is in shut-down mode. An analog economy gauge, to the left of the tachometer, helps the driver maintain the most efficient driving style.
Located midway down the center stack, the navigation system’s 6.5-inch full-color VGA display (2HY models) doubles as a monitor that shows a graphic representation of the hybrid drivetrain’s power flow. This display continuously informs the occupants how the system is sending power to the wheels from the ESS/electric motors, the gasoline engine or both. The screen also displays reverse electrical flow during regenerative braking and whether the vehicle is in two- or four-wheel-drive mode.
Additional interior features include:
- Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on all models
- SiriusXM Satellite Radio standard on all models
- AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player is standard on 1HY
- Navigation radio with MP3-compatible CD player and USB port is standard on 2HY and includes SiriusXM NavTraffic compatibility
- Bluetooth phone connectivity is standard
- Power-adjustable pedals are standard on 2HY
- Two auxiliary 12-volt power outlets are standard on all models
- Leather-appointed front seating is standard on 2HY
- Front 40/20/40-split bench seat is standard on 1HY
- Front bucket seats are standard on 2HY and include six-way power driver and passenger seat adjusters and floor console
- Three-passenger rear bench seat is standard on all models
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls is standard on all models
- Power-operated sunroof is available on 2HY.
Silverado Hybrid chassis and suspension
The Silverado Hybrid is built on GM’s full-size truck platform, incorporating a fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension, leaf-spring rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. A stiff framereduces vibrations transmitted to the passenger cabin, while the strength and accuracy of the fully boxed frame also enable precise mounting and tuning of chassis and suspension components.
Wide front and rear tracks– 68.1 inches (1,732 mm) front/67 inches (1,702 mm) rear – enhance handling and vehicle stability for a more confident road feel. Additional features include:
- Autotrac electronic transfer case with rotary controls is standard on 4WD models
- The standard axle ratio is 3.08
- A locking rear differential is standard
- 7,100 GVWR on 2WD models
- 7,300 GVWR on 4WD models
- A trailering package is standard on all models.
Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid has strong body structure designed to absorb crash energy and provide a protective “safety cage” around occupants. Head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for both seating rows are standard, and seat-mounted side-impact air bags for driver and right-front passenger provide thorax and pelvic protection. The roof-mounted head curtain air bags include design features that provide increased rollover protection and occupant containment.
Additional safety features include:
- StabiliTrak electronic stability control system helps reduce the risk of rollover crashes by keeping the vehicle in the driver’s intended path by applying throttle, braking or a combination of both
- Rear vision camera system designed to provide the driver with a view of people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle
- Standard four-wheel-disc brake system with ABS featuring smooth, quiet operation, longer pad life and more resistance to brake pulsation
- Pretensioners that minimize forward movement during a collision are standard on the front safety belts. Load-limiting retractors cinch the belt more tightly
- Tire pressure monitoring system is standard
- Standard remote keyless entry (RKE) system provides a second function for the red panic button. Drivers can use it to locate their cars without sounding the panic alarm.
Six months of OnStar Directions and Connections service is standard on Silverado Hybrid. OnStar is the global leading provider of connected safety, security and mobility solutions and advanced information technology.
OnStar’s RemoteLink Mobile App allows smartphone users to control vehicle functions, access vehicle information and send directions directly to the vehicle. A new, opt-in service called FamilyLink allows subscribers to stay connected to loved ones by checking the location of their vehicle online or by signing up for vehicle location alerts.
Silverado Hybrid also features new OnStar button icons. Drivers will notice an updated look for the Hands-Free Calling button, blue OnStar button and red Emergency button.

ATLANTA – Two dozen Express vans donated by Chevrolet to Habitat for Humanity depart Atlanta today en route to storm-ravaged New York and New Jersey, where the vans and scores of tools donated by Lowe’s and the Robert Bosch Tool Co. will be put to work helping communities recover from Hurricane Sandy.
The vans are the latest contribution by Chevrolet, General Motors and the GM Foundation to Sandy relief efforts that now total more than $2.8 million.
“As the initial reports of Sandy's devastation recede from the headlines, now the hard work of recovery begins to help affected communities and people get back on their feet,” said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “The Chevy Express vans are just the right vehicles to carry the people and tools to get the job done."
On October 30, GM announced the donation of 30 Express cargo vans, five Express passenger vans, five Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid SUVs and 10 Chevrolet Traverse crossovers to the American Red Cross.

DETROIT – Chevrolet today unveiled the all-new 2014 Silverado 1500 full-size pickup. New from hood to hitch, Silverado is engineered to be the strongest, smartest, and most capable Silverado ever.
The new Silverado builds on Chevrolet’s 95 years of truck heritage, while raising the bar for full-size pickups. Among the many updates for 2014 are a new trio of powerful, efficient EcoTec3 engines; a stronger, quieter, more comfortable cab; revised steering, suspension and brakes; ingenious solutions for managing cargo in the bed and true truck capability for towing and hauling.

2014 Silverado 1500 at a glance
For 2014, Silverado 1500 is designed and engineered to deliver the capability – without compromise – that customers have come to expect from Chevrolet pickups.
Silverado’s exterior design blends strong Chevy truck heritage with a refined, modern aesthetic. The new design is more muscular, more functional and more aerodynamic. A twin-port grille, full-width bumper and dual power dome hood create a strong presence, which is carried through in sculpted body sides and fender flares.
Under the hood, the 2014 Silverado 1500 features a family of three all-new EcoTec3 engines, a V-6 and two V-8s, engineered specifically for use in full-size trucks. All three engines incorporate direct fuel injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing, a combination of advanced technologies not found in other competitors’ trucks. All three switch seamlessly to four-cylinder operation to improve efficiency during light load driving and all three are engineered provide more power, more torque and better efficiency than the previous versions.
The engine family includes a new 4.3L V-6 that will have ample torque to power a crew cab pickup and tow a substantial trailer, as well as a new 5.3L V-8 designed for more power, more torque and better efficiency than the current version, which is currently the V-8 fuel economy leader. A new 6.2L V-8 is engineered to be the most capable engine in any light-duty pickup.
SAE certified horsepower and torque ratings and EPA fuel economy estimates for the new Silverado will be final and available beginning early next year.
The all-new interiors of the 2014 Silverado 1500 reflect the same focus on form and function. The upright instrument panel, six-gauge instrument cluster and multiple storage options are tailored specifically to the needs of truck customers. Controls are functional, logically placed and easy to operate with work gloves on. Rear doors on crew cabs are larger, for easier entry and exit, and rear doors on extended cab models are now hinged at the front for easier access, especially in tight spots.
The new truck cab is stronger, with nearly two-thirds of the structure made from high-strength steel for a confident feel and improved safety. Similarly, the main rails and key cross members of the updated frame are high-strength steel with major elements hydroformed for reduced mass and improved strength.
New shear-style body mounts tune out both up-and-down and side-to-side movement for a quieter, more comfortable ride. Extended- and crew-cab models have a third set of hydraulic body mounts to further isolate the cabs. Combined with numerous other acoustic and NVH (noise vibration and harshness) enhancements, the intended result is a solid, refined feel with no loss in traditional truck capability.
The pickup box also benefits from this focus on providing Silverado customers with the right tools for the job. The box is made from roll-formed steel for increased strength and reduced mass, compared with the stamped beds used by major competitors, and it features a range of smart solutions for everyday life.
Silverado’s CornerStep bumper, combined with handholds built into the new box rail protectors, makes it easier to access the box. The bed is also available with new upper tie-down hooks, under-rail light-emitting diode lighting, and an EZ Lift and Lower tailgate.
The chassis of the 2014 Silverado includes a number of customer-focused updates. A revised front and rear suspension and wider wheels provide a more comfortable ride and more confident handling. Electric power steering improves steering feel and reduces fuel consumption. New four-wheel-disc brakes with Duralife ™ rotors improve brake feel and extend rotor life.
Silverado will be available with segment-exclusive safety features such as Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning with an Active Safety Seat, and Front and Rear Park Assist. StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist are standard on all Silverados.
“We have made significant upgrades in the key areas of the new Silverado, and improved almost every detail of the truck,” said Luke. “We think both Chevrolet loyalists and competitive shoppers are going to find a lot to love about the new Silverado, beginning with the very first time they sit behind the wheel.”
Engineered and validated for demanding customers
Truck customers are among the most discerning and demanding in the business. They know trucks inside out – many have owned trucks for decades. They work their trucks hard, under conditions that would shock many car owners. They have tough tasks to do, and they expect their trucks to do them, without complaint. And they expect their trucks to endure – the average age of a full-size pickup is now more than 10.4 years.
The team that designed the new Silverado went to extremes to design a new truck that would exceed the demands of these customers.
For example, GM’s new full-size trucks will undergo more than 6 million miles of durability testing in the torture chambers at the Milford Proving Ground, over the deserts and mountains of Nevada and across the frozen flats of Kapuskasing, Ontario. That’s equivalent to 240 trips around the earth. In addition, the trucks will accumulate more than 7 million real-world miles during final testing, bringing total test miles to more than 13 million.
Even the basics, like the new inlaid doors, were tested to the extreme, with the doors undergoing nearly 150 truck lives’ worth of testing.
The 2014 Silverado 1500 crew cab will start production in the second quarter of 2013, with other cab styles following later in the year.

commercial van debuts in North America in 2013, it will come equipped
with the company’s award-winning, fuel-efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine to better meet the needs of commercial truck customers.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine in the new rear-wheel-drive
Transit will complement the van’s expected class-leading driving
dynamics and technology, making it the perfect replacement for Ford’s
venerable E-Series wagon and van in North America.
“The new Ford Transit commercial van will deliver all the
capability and capacity that customers get with today’s E-Series, but
with the bonus of improved fuel economy and potentially lower operating
costs thanks to its available EcoBoost engine,” said Tim Stoehr, Ford
Commercial Truck Marketing manager. “This engine has revolutionized the
half-ton pickup segment for F-150 and we’re expecting it will have the
same effect on commercial vans.”
The new Transit will go beyond living up to the Ford E-Series’
exceptional work reputation. The vehicle will achieve at least 25
percent better fuel economy compared to similar E-Series vans, due in
part to smart weight savings that will trim at least 300 pounds from
Transit compared to a similar E-Series van. That means customers could
potentially save thousands of dollars in operating costs from fuel
savings.
EcoBoost engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing
technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains
that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for
millions of drivers around the world. By 2013, Ford plans to produce up
to 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally in a wide variety of vehicles
from small cars to trucks.
EcoBoost engines feature:
- A high-pressure direct-injection fuel system fed by a common rail that delivers a precise amount of gasoline in the exact spot for fast and complete burn
- Turbocharging to create a denser mix of air and fuel in each cylinder
- Special pistons with optimized bowls in the center to improve combustion efficiency. These pistons are also oil-cooled, which reduces in-cylinder temperatures
- Reduced CO2 emissions and excellent fuel economy compared to V8 engines with similar power ratings
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 available in the Ford F-150 had a
successful year in 2011, exceeding 100,000 sales in less than one year
on the market. EcoBoost-equipped F-150s now account for more than 40
percent of F-150 retail sales.
Gasoline direct injection
A key contributor to EcoBoost fuel efficiency is direct injection of gasoline.This system precisely delivers a fine mist of fuel directly into each cylinder for optimal performance, economy and emissions. Unlike port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines that spray fuel in the intake system before it enters the combustion chamber, the direct-injection system puts the fuel exactly where it needs to be in the cylinder for optimal combustion.

per square inch, which is about 35 times more intense than PFI
injection.
Cargo and people hauler
The current-generation Transit van is the best-selling van in
Europe. Ford has sold more than 6 million Transits across five
continents since its original launch in 1965. The Transit is currently
offered to global customers in a variety of cargo, passenger and chassis
cab configurations with a choice of efficient diesel engines. In 2010,
the 6-millionth Transit rolled off the production line in Turkey.
Conceived as Ford’s first pan-European product in the mid-1960s, the
next generation Transit will become a global asset with the availability
of the full-size rear-wheel versions in the US.
To get ready for production in the U.S. by 2013, Ford is investing
$1.1 billion in its Kansas City Assembly Plant, where the Transit will
be built alongside the F-150.

GMC Pickups 101: What’s the Differential?
What an axle ratio means and why picking the right one is important
DETROIT – Technologies like advanced turbodiesel V-8 engines or hydroformed steel frames have advanced the 2013 GMC Sierra to unprecedented levels of capability for fullsize pickups. In just the decade since the 2003 model debuted, maximum towing capacity for a Sierra HD has risen 43 percent, from 16,100 pounds to an industry-leading 23,100 pounds.
Getting that towing force from the engine to each rear wheel is the task of a set of gears located in the center of the truck’s rear axle known as the differential. The ratio of the sizes of those gears is represented by the diameter of the gear that drives the wheels in relation to the gear from the driveshaft. So, a 3.08:1 ratio indicates the drive gear has 3.08 times as many teeth as the gear on the driveshaft.
Using different diameter gears within the differential affects both towing ability and fuel efficiency. Since pickup owners have varying needs and preferences, GMC addresses different requirements by offering various rear axle gear ratios.
“A numerically lower axle ratio keeps engine speeds lower for better fuel economy, while higher ratios generally yield higher towing capacities and quicker launches from a stop,” said Greg Martuch, energy and powertrain engineer for the GMC Sierra.
Four different ratios are available across the Sierra 1500 ½-ton pickup lineup: from 3.08:1 to 3.73:1. Available ratios vary by cab type, engine and drive type. Sierra HD, including ¾-ton and 1-ton models, uses rear axle ratios of 3.73:1 and 4.10:1.
Each ratio is decided after months and years of testing factors such as acceleration from a stop; performance on a grade; transmission behavior; fuel economy; towing, and thermal management. Keeping engine speeds down allows a vehicle’s cooling to be more effective.
How much of a difference does the choice of axle make? A 2013 Sierra 2500HD with a 6.0L V-8 and four-wheel drive can tow a maximum of 9,900 pounds with a 3.73:1 ratio or 14,400 pounds with a 4.10:1 ratio. Martuch estimates the fuel economy difference at highway speeds would be around 0.2-0.3 mpg between those two ratios, though reduced engine noise is also a benefit of maintaining lower engine speeds with the more-efficient ratio.
Martuch recommends customers consider their everyday needs. “The higher the combined weight of a truck and trailer, the harder the vehicle needs to work. If a customer is going to tow a small boat just a few times a year, a Sierra 1500 with a lower ratio would capably handle the occasional towing duty while delivering better efficiency the other 95 percent of the time. But for someone towing construction equipment every day, I would definitely recommend an HD pickup with a 4.10 axle and external engine and transmission oil coolers.”

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 10, 2012 – Ford’s all-new Transit
full-size van, which goes on sale late next year, will be offered with a
new clean-running 3.2-liter Power Stroke® five-cylinder diesel, further bolstering Ford’s lineup of fuel-efficient cars, trucks and SUVs.
The new diesel, Ford’s second in North America, already has
established a proven record for reliability, durability and refinement
in the global Ford Ranger truck sold in world markets. The new Power
Stroke Diesel will be the only five-cylinder diesel engine available in a
commercial van in North America.
“Commercial van drivers spend most of their working hours behind
the wheel. We know they want a fuel-efficient diesel engine with smooth,
responsive performance and low operating costs,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford
vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “The 3.2-liter Power Stroke
engine has been developed and proven globally to deliver a world-class
combination of power, fuel economy and refinement.”
The 3.2-liter will join the most fuel-efficient lineup in Ford
Motor Company’s history. Next year, Ford will offer eight vehicles rated
at 40 mpg or higher – double today’s total, and more than any other
automaker. Ford tops Toyota in fuel economy in every segment in which
both companies compete.
While power has not been certified for North America, the new
diesel engine is rated in Europe at 197 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of
torque.
Like the larger 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 offered in Ford F-Series
Super Duty trucks, the fuel system has been carefully tailored and
calibrated for combustion efficiency. It enables the newest Power Stroke
to achieve exceptional fuel economy ratings without affecting power
levels.
The 3.2-liter turbo diesel features state-of-the-art piezoelectric
fuel injectors fed through a high-pressure common rail fuel system, and
advanced emissions technologies.
Precise injection timing and calibration also ensures a smooth
combustion process to reduce hard diesel combustion clatter, resulting
in lower noise levels that are more like a gasoline engine.Each injector
nozzle has eight spray holes and can deliver up to five injections per
combustion cycle. A pilot injection controls noise levels and a main
injection is used for power generation.
Technical features of the new Power Stroke 3.2-liter include:
- Quick-start glow plugs that enable smooth and fast startups at temperatures down to -10 degrees F
- Durable, rigid sand-cast gray iron cylinder block
- Aluminum cylinder head with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder
- Advanced common rail piezoelectric fuel injectors that deliver multiple injections per stroke to improve performance and reduce NVH; maximum fuel pressure is 26,100 psi
- Variable nozzle turbocharger with electronic actuation; maximum impellor speed of 197,800 rpm
- First application of selective catalytic reduction for reduced nitrogen oxide emissions in a Ford van
- Integrated diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter to save space
- Expected to be B20 biodiesel compatible
Additionally, the engine features cast-aluminum, low-friction
coated pistons with piston-cooling jets, which squirt oil on the
underside of the pistons to keep the piston crowns cool under extreme
operating conditions. Also included is a water-cooled high-performance
electric-controlled exhaust gas recirculation valve that is better able
to withstand coolant pressure drops.
The 3.2-liter Power Stroke is one of several engines that will be
available for Transit in North America, including the proven 3.5-liter
EcoBoost® gasoline engine. All engines are mated to a Ford 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission.
With a flat torque plateau – 90 percent of its peak torque is
available from 1,700 to 3,500 rpm, providing better engine flexibility –
Transit will be able to effortlessly haul full loads in town and on the
highway, while offering flexible performance across each gear in the
six-speed automatic transmission.
“The Power Stroke name is synonymous with power, work and long-term
durability,” said Bakaj. “We’re confident our commercial van customers
will be extremely pleased with the 3.2-liter’s fuel economy, performance
and running costs.”
The Power Stroke 3.2-liter is manufactured in Ford’s Struandale
Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It will be exported to
Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo., which received a
$1.1 billion investment for the Transit.

GMC Pickups 101: What’s in a Number? 1500, 2500, 3500?
Translating the ½-tons and 2500s of the Sierra Pickup

DETROIT – When three truck builders – Randolph, Reliance and Rapid – merged to become GMC in 1912, the brand’s range of gasoline- and electric-powered trucks used model numbers between 1 and 12, each denoting payload in thousands of pounds, or how much weight could be loaded on the rear.
GMC pickup trucks were classified by payload ratings right in the
brand’s earliest years.

Today, the labels “½-ton”, “¾-ton” and “1-ton” are still used industry wide for fullsize pickup truck classes despite their having little connection to the trucks’ capabilities. For 2013, a GMC Sierra 1500 “½-ton” has a payload capacity that ranges from 1,550-1,940 pounds – considerably more than the 1,000 pounds once implied. A “1-ton” Sierra 3500HD can haul up to 7,215 pounds; almost four times the 2,000 pounds its moniker suggests.
In 1936, 1/2-ton pickups grew in popularity to represent 4 out of every
10 GMC sales. These light-duty trucks had many uses, including farm hand
duty. While most of these trucks used 85 horsepower engines, this
particular model had the added boost of one extra.
“The payload-based naming convention for pickups existed right from the beginning,” said General Motors Heritage Center Manager Greg Wallace. “The ½-ton, ¾-ton, and 1-ton models became most popular with retail customers over a few decades, not just for GMC but all manufacturers. While payload capacities have grown since, those three names stuck.”

As with payload classifications, GMC helped pioneer other naming conventions for pickups. In 1967, GMC was the first company to use 1500, 2500 and 3500 to designate its three truck models, numbers that were based off the first segment of vehicle identification numbers, or VINs, and denoted hauling capability. Those numbers remain an integral part of the GMC naming strategy and every current fullsize truck sold by an American automaker uses numbers starting with 15, 25 and 35 to denote the three classifications.
In the 1970s, GMC introduced the Sierra name on a variety of trim levels
for its trucks.

Sierra name and all fullsize trucks
from any American automaker have
models starting with “15”, “25” and “35”.
The Sierra name became standard for all GMC fullsize pickups in 1989 after being used for various upscale trim packages through the ‘70s and ‘80s. The 2013 Sierra 1500 represents the core of GMC’s truck business, while the purpose-built Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD models are some of the most-capable pickups ever produced, with class-leading maximum payload.

With Australia's heavy economic reliance on rail transport for the mining and rural industries as well as the national distribution of local and imported manufactured products, it's crucial that that rail infrastructure is well constructed and maintained.

Manager Rail Structure, Dennis Bebber, said the company employs four Isuzu trucks in its construction and structures departments.
Rhomberg Rail Australia purchased its first Isuzu trucks in 2008, selecting two NPS 300 Crew models to assist in construction work around Sydney.
These four-wheel-drive NPS 300 trucks have been proved ideal for rail construction work, with their ability to get into otherwise hard to access off-road areas.
Mr Bebber said the company chose crew cabs so that the trucks could also be used to transport construction personnel.
The company purchased a further two Isuzu trucks in 2010 - an Isuzu NQR 450 Crew and Giga CXY 455 Premium - which are both used in the structures unit.
The Isuzu NQR 450 Crew is used to transport the company's smaller equipment and construction team to the work sites. It has been fitted with an equipment storage compartment and a two tonne crane to cater for its equipment and materials delivery tasks.
The Giga CXY 455 Premium has been fitted with a Fassi F1FOA rear mounted crane with a capacity of over seven tonnes at two metres and a reach of 17 metres. To accommodate this, the truck's chassis and wheelbase have been lengthened and a tag-along trailer completes the set up.
The trailer is used to carry an eight tonne high rail excavator or a 17 metre 4 tonne materials handler as required.
"We use the Giga for bridge construction, timber bridge repairs and track work. It's also used as a float for our machines and a containerised meal room and office," Mr Bebber said.
"Both the Giga CXY 455 and NQR 450 have been perfect for the type of work we do and handle the rough conditions encountered working in the rail industry. We selected the Giga in particular as it had the best capacity available to cater for a rear mounted crane.
"The trucks are required to work all over New South Wales and lower Queensland. Our depot is in Thornton and work locations vary from Beaudesart in Queensland to Wee Waa and Tootool in north west and south western New South Wales.
"The Isuzus can be driven on anything from sealed highways to dirt access roads along rail lines. We have had to take the trucks through major floods around Wee Waa and south west New South Wales and through temperatures in the high 40s out west in summer."
Mr Bebber said similarly to the Isuzu NPS models, the NQR 450 and Giga CXY 455 Isuzus are also used to transport crews to locations around the country.
"We have just returned from a job in Port Augusta, to which we drove the Giga CXY 455 to do two weeks work. It took us two days to transport our material and men each way," Mr Bebber said.
According to Mr Bebber, purchasing Isuzu trucks was a good choice for Rhomberg Rail Australia.
"We have found them easy to drive and they present a good company image. Since we purchased the trucks, we haven't had any major maintenance issues."
