Joel’s Mobile Detailing Downsizes from Full Size Van to Nissan NV200

This Nissan NV200  is being used by Joel's Mobile Detailing in Tampa, Florida.

This van provides an excellent presentation; it is an unobtrusive when parked in the driveway of customers in deed restricted neighborhoods. Joel was detailing an SUV in the Westchase neighborhood, Tampa, FL. Notice that he is working in the customer’s driveway; the van has nice, unobtrusive graphics on removable magnetic signs.

Word of Mouth at Work! Joel takes a break answers questions about his services to a neighbor .

Joel reports that the new NV200 van replaced a full size van that he used for many years. This van provides enough space for a Water Tank and Generator as well as all the other supplies needed for his detailing operation. He reports that the NV200 has excellent acceleration and ride and consumes about ½ the fuel as his previous full size van used.

bolt-on opener

Recent Design Updates:

Bolt-On Opener

The 72-150/TE-20 series come with a new and improved bolt-on style opener assembly. This new assembly eliminates the need for welding thereby protecting the liftgates factory coating(s).

Mount Plates Now Bolted Instead of Tack Welded
mount plates
The 72-150/TE-20 mounting plates are now attached to the main frame tube by means of a bolt that is attached to a single tab that is welded to the main frame tube. This new mount plate attachment method replaces the previous one that used several tack welds to hold the mount plates in place. This new method shortens installation times by eliminating the grinding of tack welds.

Grease-able Pins
greaseable pins
The 72-150/TE-20 series of gates now come standard with grease-able pins.

Important Note for Gates Ordered in Galvanized Finish

Orders received for galvanized 72-150 and TE-20 models will have mount plates welded solid at spacing as noted below. Bed heights need to be identified on all galvanized orders.

•    34.25” spacing for high bed ranges of 44" to 54"
•    33.75” spacing for low bed ranges of 38" to 42”

An SOR (Special Order Request) will be required for all other spacing requirements or a callout for NON solid weld (tacked only) mount plates.

The Renewable Gas Supply Issue

Renewable Gas Pump0

For several years there have been significant efforts to capture and divert fugitive renewable gases toward the transportation sector where, as a replacement for diesel in heavy duty vehicles, the fuel can do tremendous good. This is particularly true in California where many progressive policies have been passed to divert organic waste from traditional, unsustainable disposal methods and reduce emissions of climate-altering short lived climate pollutants.

However, some opponents of using renewable natural gas (RNG) as a transportation fuel question whether there is enough supply of renewable gas. The doubts that they raise about supply lead them to conclude that RNG is not an energy source that should be taken seriously.

Supply vs. Demand
Some claim that policy makers should not invest resources in developing the markets for renewable gas, particularly in the transportation sector, in part because the supply of renewable gas in the state will never match the demand, and will only be capable of replacing a small fraction of the fuel consumption that is currently fed by fossil gas. They point to recent studies that suggest the potential quantity of economically recoverable gas in California is no more than ten percent of the fuel demand in the transportation sector.

Transverse Compartment - An Option for Harbor Service Bodies

The Transverse Compartment in the front compartment of an 11' Harbor Service Body is opened up to go across the bed are to the back of the opposite compartment on the other side of the service body. Notice how the shelf that lines up with the floor is a permanent steel shelf welded in place and the additional shelves are removable and movable.

The Transverse Compartment gives more space that can be locked and secured. You lose a bit of the front of the cargo area, but we think you'll agree that it is a very worthy trade-off. This is not an expensive option and Harbor does them all the time in various ways on a number of Harbor products. This is just one of the many modifications we can make to our standard products inexpensively to make them more useful for your business.

The State of Maine gets a New Red Crane Truck - by Messer Truck Equipment

This Crane Body gives me all the storage to carry all the stuff I need when I am miles from civilization *

Here's what Joe Powers, the State of Maine Maintenance Co-Coordinator for the Bureau of  Parks and Lands had to say to Service Truck Magazine about his new rig: “My old truck had the welder mounted in the bed, but I had them put it up on the top for this one. That gives me a lot more room in the bed to carry shovels, big pry bars, chain saw, extra diesel fuel, extra gasoline, blocking, and all the stuff I might need when I’m miles from civilization.” — Joe Powers, maintenance coordinator, Maine’s Bureau of Parks and Lands

Reasons Why Having A Reliable Truck Repair Service Available Is Essential

Anyone who owns a fleet of transportation vehicles or even a semi-truck will need someone to provide quality trailer repair at some point in time. Providing a service like this requires experienced and specially trained staff members whose main goal is to provide exceptional customer service.

The end result of quality trailer repair should be a long-lasting finished product. It is imperative that every truck be able to transport their cargo safely. In addition to fixing diesel vehicles, there is always routine maintenance that needs to be performed. There are many shop services that businesses can offer, including 24 hour road service, state and FHWA inspections, air conditioning services, tire service, and towing services.

Towing services can be a large part of trailer repair. A truck can break down at any point in time, and if it does, there needs to be someone who can tow the vehicle 24 hours a day. The company should have a rapid dispatch service and have the ability to perform heavy and medium duty as well as roll back services.

Road service is also important. Some trucks may need to be fixed on the spot and others may need to be towed somewhere for more extensive service. Service trucks should be fully stocked with parts and supplies and all service trucks should have equipment on them when they arrive for a job. This equipment may include gas-powered air compressors, air tools, hand tools, cordless power tools, and oxy/acetylene torches. Many mechanics will take service trucks home with them after hours in case they receive a service call.

Many truck drivers will admit that a broken down trailer can keep them off the road longer than a broken down truck. That is why it is so important to have the name and number of a trusted trailer repair company handy at all times.

The skilled employees that work for these companies can perform every job from welding and tire services to serious engine issues. They know that situations like this can be stressful for the drivers but that it also comes with the territory. The service staff members strive to take the stress away from the drivers and keep them as relaxed as possible. They try to fix the problem and get them back on the road as quickly as possible.

Being a truck driver is a tough job. Drivers are on the road for days at a time, they spend quite a bit of time by themselves, and they don't always take the best care of themselves while they are on the road. The last thing a driver wants to think about or deal with is their truck breaking down while they are on the road. Any driver who has had a breakdown will more than likely be able to recommend a good quality trailer repair company based on personal experience. It is a good idea for a trucking company to establish a partnership with a service provider in case of an emergency.

Rightsizing Your Vehicle Fleet to Conserve Fuel

Fleet rightsizing is a management practice that can help vehicle fleet managers build and maintain sustainable, fuel-efficient fleets. Fleet inventories often grow over time to include vehicles that are highly specialized, rarely used, or unsuitable for current applications. By optimizing fleet size and composition, managers can minimize vehicle use, conserve fuel, reduce emissions, and save money on fuel and maintenance.

Evaluate Vehicle Needs and Use
Fleet managers should understand their drivers' daily vehicle use and needs. Most fleet managers already have a handle on vehicle quantities, types, average mileage, payloads, and fuel economy. Fleet rightsizing combines this information with a critical look at fleet operations to identify opportunities for reducing fuel use. When rightsizing, fleet managers should evaluate how important each vehicle is to the fleet’s performance by asking themselves:

  • What is the optimal number of vehicles required to properly support the fleet’s needs?
  • What tasks are accomplished by each vehicle? Or, what is the drive cycle?
  • What is the daily, weekly, or monthly mileage of each vehicle? Or, what is the duty cycle?
  • Are fleet vehicles the optimal vehicle type, class, and size for the job?
  • Are there any vehicles that are no longer cost effective to operate or no longer fulfilling their purpose?
  • Are there any vehicles that are no longer being used or have a lot of downtime?
  • Can any vehicles be replaced by lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles?
  • Are there any alternatives to owning or leasing a vehicle, such as shuttle bus services, motor pool vehicles, sharing vehicles with other offices/agencies, public transportation, or short term rentals when needed?
