When budgeting for expenses, there are a lot of things that fall outside of your control. For the most part, fuel can be one of those things that’s generally “just a cost of doing business.” However, there are a lot of things you can consider to reduce, or mitigate as much as possible, fuel costs on the job. Check out these five things to consider.

Idle Time

Idling your work truck on the jobsite has become a fairly common practice, and sometimes it’s necessary. At times, things like inverters, power takeoffs, air compressors, and more require the engine to be cranking in order to work. However, don’t let the necessity to idle for those functions become a common occurrence of convenience when it isn’t needed. You’d be surprised how quickly cutting those idle minutes can add up over the span of months or years.

Vehicle Maintenance

For a glut of reasons, you should be properly maintaining your work trucks. But one added benefit to regular maintenance is increased fuel economy. Regular fluid changes, changing filters, and routine engine tune-ups keep your truck’s powerplant optimally efficient. In addition to maintaining the powertrain, properly worn and inflated tires can make a big difference in fuel efficiency.

Slim down

Do you really need to carry everything and the kitchen sink from jobsite to jobsite? You don’t, and your truck will thank you for not doing so. Loading your truck with only the tools for the job at hand reduces weight, and reduced weight is a major factor in fuel economy.

Lose the Leadfoot

Your driving habits may be the number one factor in fuel efficiency. When you drive with the intention of efficiency, it shows. While it might be a slow and steady ride, your wallet will thank you later for taking it easy on the gas pedal. Planning service calls in an efficient manner can help you save time and miles. HOW TO CALCULATE A WORK TRUCK'S PAYLOAD

How To Calculate Payload
With several technical terms and acronyms used when calculating a vehicle’s payload, it can get quite confusing. Get it wrong and risk being overloaded which can cause expensive citations, accelerated maintenance costs and safety issues. To make it easy, we break down each piece of calculating the payload of your work truck below and give some additional tips to consider.

First, let’s start with defining the technical terms.
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - The maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the chassis manufacturer. Essentially, how much the vehicle can carry with everything including chassis, body, fluids, fuel, passengers and cargo. Trailers are not included in this rating.
    Chassis manufacturers always will publish this weight. It can be found on the sticker placed within the front drive side door frame or on the chassis manufacturer’s website.
  • Curb Weight - The total weight of a vehicle with all operating consumables including oil, coolant, refrigerant and fuel. Include the weight of a truck body if applicable in the curb weight. This number will not include the weight of passengers and cargo within the vehicle.
    This number will come from the chassis manufacturer as well and can be found on their website. If your work truck has a body, be sure to include the body weight (including the bumper, mounting kit and shelves if applicable) within the curb weight as well. Body weights should be located on the body manufacturer’s website.
  • Payload- The difference between Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Curb Weight. Simply put, it is the amount of weight left that your vehicle can carry in passengers and cargo.

The equation to calculate your work truck’s payload is:

GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (GVWR) - CURB WEIGHT = PAYLOAD


Let’s run a quick example. Let’s say your truck’s GVWR is 10,000 lbs and your curb weight is 7,100 lbs. What is your payload?
Answer:10,000 lbs (GVWR) - 7,100 lbs (Curb Weight) = 2,900 lbs Payload
This may sound like a lot of payload but keep in mind a few things. Your payload doesn’t include passengers, at the very least your vehicle will have one passenger (the driver) and use up 150 lbs (or more) of payload. If you have multiple passengers, account for those as well. Don’t forget your tools, parts and materials you will carry on your truck. On upfits like a service or utility body, there is ample space to store these items. Calculate the weight of these items carefully and don’t underestimate. Also, be sure to account for any items you install on the truck or body after calculating the payload. These could include a grill guard, ladder or material rack, toolbox, generator, compressor, welder, auxiliary fuel tank and more. Lastly, keep some payload on reserve! There are times when you will need to carry additional equipment, tools or materials to the job that were not included in the original payload calculation. If you leave ample payload open, this won’t become an issue.

DETROIT — GMC is taking premium to the next level with expanded availability for its carbon fiber bed, 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel and 10-speed automatic transmission, plus additional technology like Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera1 to elevate the ownership experience in the 2020 Sierra 1500. The updates add to a robust portfolio of technologies that deliver an innovative and premium ownership experience.
“The Sierra is delivering the tech customers want in the light-duty truck market, and the 2020 model demonstrates that Professional Grade means never slowing down,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. “In just its first year on the market, the 2019 Sierra introduced the available, industry-first CarbonPro Bed and MultiPro tailgate. The truck’s 2020 updates show how the Sierra continues to raise the bar year in and year out.”
The Sierra 1500’s updates include the following:
  • Available Enhanced ProGrade Trailering features a segment-first transparent trailer view, originally introduced on the soon-to-launch 2020 Sierra HD, with a segment-leading 15 total available camera views.
  • Available Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera.
  • Elevation model now offered in Crew Cab configuration.

  • 8-inch-diagonal infotainment system now capable of supporting SiriusXM with 360L2 (if equipped).
Class-leading towing technologyThe GMC Sierra already features an innovative suite of towing technologies that enable an exceptional light-duty towing experience. For 2020, the Sierra 1500 will be available with the upgraded ProGrade Trailering Systemintroduced earlier this year on the 2020 Sierra HD. The updated system brings more camera views and in-vehicle Trailering App3 enhancements designed to simplify and streamline the trailering process.
The ProGrade Trailering System now features an available class-leading 15 unique camera views1, including a segment-first transparent trailer view to help optimize the driver’s view around the truck and compatible trailers to provide added confidence when towing. New for 2020, the available transparent trailer view uses the tailgate-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer. The resulting display helps the driver to virtually see through the trailer4, benefiting drivers when navigating parking lots, merging into traffic and making tight turns.
The in-vehicle Trailering App has updated features and enhanced mobile integration for 2020. Owners will now be able to create and edit trailer profiles through the myGMC mobile app and load them into their Sierra, saving time when hooking up for the first time. Owners will also have the option of making a trailer profile shareable for easy transfer of trailer specs. The in-vehicle Trailering App will now also send maintenance reminders and trailer mileage information to an owner’s phone, available for viewing through the myGMC mobile app.
Also new for 2020, the Sierra 1500 will feature available smart trailer technology designed to allow access to select features of the iN∙Command® Control System from ASA Electronics5 through the myGMC mobile app6, either on compatible Android and iOS smartphones or on the vehicle’s infotainment system via Apple CarPlay7 or Android Auto8 compatibility. Depending on how a compatibly equipped trailer is configured, owners of the 2020 Sierra 1500 may be able to turn on the trailer’s air conditioning or water heater, check water and holding tank levels, or monitor fuel levels on trailers equipped with generators — all before arriving at their destination.
Technology enhancementsFor 2020, the Sierra also receives Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera available on SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels. The system features a single high-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror and can bring the Sierra to a complete stop.
The 2020 Sierra is also capable of supporting SiriusXM’s next generation audio entertainment platform. Available SiriusXM with 360L2 combines satellite and streaming to deliver more channels and choices than before, giving drivers and their passengers more control over what they listen to and when, and improving listeners’ ability to discover more great content across SiriusXM.
Propulsion system advancements New for 2020, the 10-speed automatic transmission is now offered with the 5.3L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. The 5.3L V-8 and 10-speed automatic pairing will be standard on the Sierra Denali and Sierra AT4 and available on all four-wheel drive Sierras with the SLE trim level and above. The 10-speed automatic has more gears for more ratios, giving Sierra refined performance and outstanding shift quality.
The previously announced available 3.0L Duramax inline-six turbo-diesel engine will pair with the 10-speed automatic as well, bringing class-leading horsepower and torque figures. The 3.0L Duramax produces an SAE-certified 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Beyond delivering class-leading figures, the inherently balanced nature of an inline-six engine also delivers remarkable on-road refinement, perfect for Sierra Denali owners who expect Professional Grade refinement in every aspect of their truck.
The 3.0L Duramax delivers the maximum 460 lb-ft of torque at just 1500 rpm, perfectly suiting the engine for off-road use in the Sierra AT4. That amount of torque at such a low engine speed — and the truck’s driving range — adds another level of capability to the Sierra’s most off-road-focused package ever.
For 2020, the 3.0L Duramax is now available in conjunction with the CarbonPro Edition of the Denali and AT4 models, pairing the innovative turbo-diesel engine with the industry’s first carbon fiber bed for the first time.

The 72-150/TE-20 mounting plates are now attached to the main frame tube by means of a bolt that is attached to a single tab that is welded to the main frame tube. This new mount plate attachment method replaces the previous one that used several tack welds to hold the mount plates in place. This new method shortens installation times by eliminating the grinding of tack welds.

•    33.75” spacing for low bed ranges of 38" to 42”

An SOR (Special Order Request) will be required for all other spacing requirements or a callout for NON solid weld (tacked only) mount plates.

Sticking with the theme of disruption and transformation, nothing has the potential to be more disruption in the trucking industry than autonomous vehicles.

At a recent NationaLease meeting, guest speaker John Paul MacDuffie, professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, said that autonomy requires new hardware components and lots of AI software. Engineering talent will be one of the keys to its success along with the ability to get the system integration piece of the equation right. MacDuffie does not see technology firms jumping in to manufacture vehicles but rather, working on developing operating systems for autonomous vehicles.

We are already seeing incremental moves toward autonomy with some of the advanced driver assistance features that are available on trucks today. This includes things like collision mitigation and lane departure systems.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has defined six levels of autonomy from zero (no automation) to 5 (full automation). MacDuffie believes there is a big leap in getting from Level 2 autonomy to Level 3.

Level 2, or partial automation, allows steering and acceleration and deceleration to be automated “using information about the driving environment…with the exception that the human driver perform all remaining aspects of the dynamic driving task,” according to the SAE definition. The human driver is tasked with monitoring the driving environment.

In Level 3, or conditional automation, the system monitors the driving environment while the driver will respond appropriately to a request by the system to intervene.

“Level 3 automation is particularly tricky,” MacDuffie said. How to safely transfer control from the computer to the driver, particularly in emergency situations, needs to be worked out. “[There has to be a] balancing act of providing drivers with the benefits of autonomy — like not having to pay attention — while ensuring they are ready to grab the wheel if the [vehicle] encounters something it can’t handle.”

What is likely to happen on the road to autonomous vehicles, according to MacDuffie, is partnerships between truck makers and tech companies — what he calls “partnerships of ‘sky’ and ‘ground.’”
He added, “The winning combination will succeed not just in meeting customer needs/wants, but also societal goals and expectations.”

Gas vs. Diesel: Which To Spec

Today’s comprehensive selection of commercial vehicle engines offers many benefits to customers.

A myriad of choices enable customers to select the engine that best fits their application without sacrificing torque, fuel efficiency, horsepower and more.

While the vast engine choices create additional value, it can also create a dilemma when it comes to properly spec’ing the engine for the intended application of the vehicle. Purchasers may be overwhelmed by the selection and consequently choose an engine that doesn’t best fit the requirements. Over spec’ing and under spec’ing are common mistakes, leading to lost efficiency, productivity or a longer return on investment period.

Within the last few years, commercial vehicle manufacturers have vastly increased engine choices. The most notable additions have been diesel engines within several Class 1 light duty pickups and gasoline engines within Class 6 and Class 7 medium duty trucks. While gasoline engines still dominate Class 1 and diesel engines make up the majority of Class 6 and Class 7, these new engine choices make the decision much more analytical than ever before.

So how do you know which engine is right for the job? There are many factors to consider as it pertains to the engine when in the market for a new commercial vehicle.

Cost
Commercial vehicles would all be perfect if cost didn’t need to be factored into the equation.

Unfortunately, the real world operates on financial constraints so unlimited funding for your next work truck just isn’t feasible. That being said, cost is a major influencer on the selection of the commercial vehicle, especially as it relates to the engine.

Acquisition costs can be substantially higher with diesel engines, stretching from $8,000 more in light duty commercial vehicles up to $12,000* in heavy duty commercial trucks. Gasoline engines offer the advantage with significantly lower acquisition costs.

Horsepower & Torque
Selecting an engine with enough horsepower and torque is vital for success with many commercial vehicles. The most common application considered for ample horsepower and torque is pulling a trailer, regardless of size. The more weight on the trailer, the more important horsepower and torque becomes. Other applications, including hauling bulk material, should also pay close attention to the horsepower and torque ratings of an engine as these vehicles are consistently hauling the maximum available payload.

While gasoline and diesel engines have similar horsepower ratings, they are vastly different with torque. Looking at a class 3 pickup, the diesel has a slight advantage in horsepower rating yet boasts a torque rating two times that of the gas engine**. Point being, if you are towing heavy loads or your application relies upon torque to get you moving a diesel will be the better fit for you.


Fuel Efficiency
Federal regulations have forced commercial vehicle manufacturers to maximize fuel efficiency within new vehicles, regardless if they contain diesel or gasoline engines. This has caused the gap of fuel efficiency between gasoline and diesel engines to shrink. Historically, diesel engines have held the advantage of fuel efficiency over gasoline engines. Today, you can expect a slight difference between most gasoline and diesel engine choices. For instance, with a light duty Class 1 pickup you can expect to see a combined fuel efficiency rating of 20 mpg with the gasoline engine and a combined fuel efficiency rating of 23 mpg with the diesel engine***.

Commercial vehicle customers should compare the price per gallon of diesel and unleaded fuel and factor in projected annual mileage to determine overall fuel costs.

PTO Provisions
Snowplows, dumps, cranes, many different applications require a power-take-off (PTO). To avoid potential compatibility issues, ensure the engine (and transmission) you select will allow for PTO installation. Many truck manufacturers offer a “PTO prep” option, making the installation of the PTO unit more seamless for the upfitter.

At one time, your only choice for PTO compatible engines were diesels. Today, many manufacturers offer gas engines that can easily accommodate a PTO unit for auxiliary equipment.

Idle Frequency
Engine idling is common within many vocations that employ commercial vehicles to get the job done. Today, many local and state regulations are in place to discourage companies from engine idling. This has led to many product developments, including stand-alone, mobile power systems that mount on the commercial vehicle. For companies that are still allowed to idle their engines on the job, there are obvious benefits associated with diesel engines.

Diesel engines idle at a lower speed and are engineered for severe duty cycles, making them the more popular choice within high-idle applications.

Maintenance
The longer the life cycle of the vehicle, the more vital engine maintenance will become. There are many considerations to be made as it pertains to maintenance including cost of replacement parts, preventative maintenance intervals, qualified technicians, warranty coverage and more.

While diesels have longer maintenance intervals and warranty coverage, there are additional components and requirements (DEF fluid) that aren’t found on gasoline engines. Diesel replacement parts tend to be more expensive and finding qualified diesel mechanics can be a challenge in certain geographic areas.

Cost leans heavily towards gasoline while torque, engine life, fuel efficiency and idle frequency favors diesel. PTO provisions and maintenance are heavily reliant upon the application. As always, be sure to have a clear understanding of the intended application of the vehicle to help ensure you make the best selection for the job at hand.

Electric Powertrains Are the Future. Will Fleets Be Ready?

Most readers of Government Fleet are seasoned professionals pursuing careers either in public fleet management or in corporate roles in support of public sector fleets. For a moment, however, put aside your current career history and aspirations and try to remember when you were a younger person, weighing career options and considering just what path to take.

The public fleet industry is on the threshold of a truly cosmic shift, and it’s quite possible that young people today are looking at our industry and questioning those options. We should, as those young people may be doing, consider what this shift will mean when it occurs.

The shift will be toward a predominance of electromotive powertrain technology and away from the internal combustion engine (ICE). Is it true that the demise of the ICE is greatly overstated, or, should we, like those young people still contemplating their career paths, be reading the tea leaves and presume they portend a very different future for us?

Calling All TITANs: Nissan, Habitat for Humanity draw inspiration from construction site supervisors to build the Ultimate Work TITAN



  • Nissan’s purpose-driven Calling All TITANs campaign continues with the donation of the Ultimate Work TITAN to Habitat for Humanity

INDIANAPOLIS – Nissan is no stranger to Habitat for Humanity, having donated more than 150 trucks and $16.9 million since 2005. Today in Indianapolis, the 14-year partnership reached new heights with the unveiling of the Ultimate Work TITAN, the second in a series of three Ultimate TITANs built as part of the purpose-driven Calling All TITANs campaign. 
Featuring a complete mobile office, toolkit and off-road necessities, the one-of-a-kind work vehicle debuted to a group of media at the headquarters of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis. The truck will be on display at The Work Truck Show at the Indiana Convention Center through March 8, and then officially donated to Habitat for Humanity, where it will be put to work on and off the job site.
"Though Nissan’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity has been deep-rooted for well over a decade, we are consistently searching for ways we can do more together," said Jeremy Tucker, vice president, Marketing Communications and Media, Nissan North America, Inc. "Behind the rugged and capable foundation of our TITAN trucks, our Calling All TITANs campaign has provided a perfect platform to do just that. In a celebration of all TITANs of the Neighborhood, alongside Habitat for Humanity, we are proud to unveil this Ultimate Work TITAN, built specifically to the needs of the hard-working people on the build site."
In creating the Ultimate Work TITAN, Nissan and Habitat spent countless hours talking with construction site supervisors and volunteers across the country to find out what they needed most in a truck. These working men and women are passionate about their trucks, and there was no shortage of ideas. After compiling their feedback, three common suggestions emerged:
  • Off-road capability is a must
  • The interior should be treated like a mobile office
  • The bed must be loaded with easy-to-access tools, ladders and lockable storage
And with that, the build of the Ultimate Work TITAN commenced.
Originating as a stock TITAN XD Diesel Crew Cab Midnight Edition, transformation into the Ultimate Work TITAN began just as the Ultimate Service TITAN did – with the addition of a factory-authorized ICON three-inch suspension lift kit, available through Nissan dealers. The ICON lift kit includes adjustable-height coil-over shock absorbers, custom rod end bearings and patent-pending Delta Joints – helping provide increased ground clearance and enhanced ride quality both on and off the job site.
Anchored by Nitto Ridge Grappler tires and ICON Alloys REBOUND wheels, the truck adds Addictive Desert Designs bumpers to provide an additional layer of protection, while a WARN Industries ZEON Platinum 12-S Winch ensures the Ultimate Work TITAN can help itself and counterparts out of even the most challenging situations. In the nighttime hours, Baja Designs lighting leads the way with custom worksite lighting.
In the midst of the chaos of a work site, often times what construction site supervisors need most is a quiet space to relax and get some paperwork or calls completed. The Ultimate Work TITAN has this covered, and then some. Knowing that supervisors are constantly in need of updated build site maps, blueprints, punch lists, daily reports and submittals – among a daily list of paperwork – a 13-inch laptop and a printer was added to help make life just a little bit easier. And not be overlooked in the back seat is a full mobile office, featuring a custom desk and file storage with an additional power inverter.

When it’s time to get out of the mobile office and into the work site, the Ultimate Work TITAN bed is a great place to start. Anchored to TITAN's innovative Utili-track® Bed Channel System, a BEDSLIDE 2000 HEAVY DUTY sets the stage for easy access to all the bed has to offer. Connected to the bed slide is a DECKED lockable storage system, where a site supervisor can confidently store tools. Commercial class heavy duty lockable tool boxes are included along the sides of the bed for additional storage.
Inside the lockable storage are some of the highest quality tools in the industry.
