GMC Leads Industry with New Rear Seat Reminder

All-new 2017 GMC Acadia introduces

 industry-first feature to help busy drivers

 

DETROIT — Life moves fast. There are a million things on everyone’s mind, and sometimes even the most organized among us need a little help remembering everything. The all-new 2017 GMC Acadia is helping to address this issue with the Rear Seat Reminder, a new, industry-first feature designed to remind drivers to check the back seat as they exit their vehicle under certain circumstances.

Each year in the U.S., about half of the children under age 14 who die of in-vehicle heatstroke do so as a result of being forgotten. Also, items left in the back seat are a target for theft. Nearly 23 percent of larceny in 2014 was from a motor vehicle, according to the FBI.

“Acadia drivers live busy lives with demanding schedules, and the Rear Seat Reminder helps protect the things we care about most,” said Tricia Morrow, GM global safety strategy engineer. “Whether it’s your lunch, laptop, pet or most importantly, your child, it’s easier than it seems to forget what’s in the back seat when moving between life’s events. With this new feature, we are leading the charge to address this ongoing problem.”

The Rear Seat Reminder works by monitoring the Acadia’s rear doors. The feature is intended to activate when either rear door is opened and closed within 10 minutes before the vehicle is started, or if they are opened and closed while the vehicle is running. Under these circumstances, the next time the vehicle is turned off after a door activation, the Acadia is designed to sound five audible chimes and display a message in the driver information center that reads, “Rear Seat Reminder / Look in Rear Seat.”

“General Motors has developed a new technology for the GMC Acadia, the Rear Seat Reminder, to give busy parents an important reminder to check the back seat before leaving the car,” said Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “Technology alone cannot solve the issue of heatstroke when it comes to young children, but this new Acadia reminder can help. We must always remember that the safest way to protect a child from heatstroke is to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.”

The feature cannot detect items in the backseat, so it is always important to check the rear seat prior to exiting the vehicle.

The industry-first feature is a standard feature on the all-new 2017 Acadia, a reimagined crossover aimed at the heart of the midsize segment.

Ford Volunteer Corps Begins Global Caring Month with Transformational Clean Water Project, Challenge Grants

•     Ford volunteers in Thailand are among thousands taking part in community service projects around the world as part of Ford Global Caring Month
•     Ford Motor Company Fund will contribute $700,000 to purchase supplies for volunteer projects, as Ford sees increasing participation in emerging markets

Dearborn, Mich,   – Ford Motor Company kicks off Global Caring Month in September with a transformational undertaking by the Ford Volunteer Corps — the Thailand Clean Water Community Project, winner of a $200,000 grant from the Bill Ford Better World Challenge.

Hundreds of Ford volunteers will help rebuild a water system in the town of Chanthaburi that serves a school and more than 3,300 local residents. Ford volunteers will repair storage tanks and install new water purifiers, sinks and other restroom fixtures. In addition, the water will be used to help irrigate crops and sustain community gardens, also providing a hands-on learning experience for students and families.

“Clean water is a necessity – a basic human right – that is not always readily available in parts of the world,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. “This project goes to the heart of making people’s lives better as we start Global Caring Month by harnessing the power of our volunteers to improve their communities.” 

The Bill Ford Better World Challenge was launched last year as part of the celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the Ford Volunteer Corps. The initiative also awarded a $200,000 grant for the Nonprofit Mobility App, a mobile software application that works like a ride-sharing app and can be used to connect Ford volunteers and nonprofits with drivers and vehicles that can move food, building materials and other supplies to where they can do the most good for people in the community. The idea — proposed by Ford employees — will be created by the University of Detroit-Mercy and used by organizations in the United Kingdom and southeast Michigan.

“I am proud of the tremendous response we received when we challenged our employees to help build a better world,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. “These initiatives will help meet critical community needs and have a positive impact on the quality of people’s lives.”

During Ford Global Caring Month in September, some 20,000 Ford volunteers will participate in hundreds of community service projects around the world. Global Caring Month is the signature annual event of the Ford Volunteer Corps. Since it was launched in 2005, Ford Volunteer Corps members have contributed more than one million hours of community service in 48 countries, representing $29 million of in-kind community investments.

This year, Global Caring Month projects include:

    Angola - Paint, repair and renovate a secondary school
    Australia - Beautify the grounds surrounding a family retreat run by the Salvation Army
    Brazil - Make repairs and renovate a nursery, daycare and library for children
    Colombia - Overhaul food bank delivery area and sort donations
    Germany - Design and develop urban gardens, help with construction work at a high school
    India - Make renovations at a home for senior citizens
    Mexico - Make improvements at an orphanage, build water storage and feed the hungry 
    South Africa - Renovate bathrooms, repair ceilings and doors, and paint homes for children 
    United Kingdom - Modernize and make extensive improvements at a mental health facility

Ford volunteers from more than three dozen countries have signed up for community projects, including a growing number in emerging markets from Cambodia and Malaysia to Guam and Samoa. In the United States, Ford employees will participate in more than 160 volunteer activities across 16 states throughout the month, including a Ford Accelerated Action Day on Sept. 16.

Ford Fund is also increasing its financial contributions to non-profit agencies during Ford Global Caring Month. Grants totaling $700,000 will be used to purchase tools and other supplies needed to complete many of this month’s community service projects.

GMC Canyon Extends Momentum with Broader 2017 Lineup

DETROIT – Building on the momentum of an 18-percent sales increase so far this year, GMC today announced a broader 2017 GMC Canyon lineup led by the new, range-topping Canyon Denali and new, off-road-inspired All Terrain X.

Like all GMC Denali models, the new Canyon Denali is distinguished by chrome exterior details and unique wheels, along with exclusive interior trim and content. It also features a new 3.6L V-6 engine that’s paired with a segment-first eight-speed automatic transmission.

This new propulsion system is offered across the 2017 Canyon lineup, including the new All Terrain X package, which takes the popular All Terrain model farther down the trail, with Goodyear DuraTrac all-terrain tires, all-weather floor liners and more.

3.6L V-6 and eight-speed automatic
The new 3.6L/eight-speed propulsion system offers stronger, more confident acceleration and smoother shift performance than the Canyon’s previous V-6/six-speed combination. This new combination focuses on refining everyday driving performance, including accelerating from a stop, passing on the highway and cruising at a constant speed.

The 3.6L leverages technologies such as continuously variable valve timing, direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) to balance performance and efficiency. It is rated at an SAE-certified 308 hp (230 kW) and 275 lb-ft of torque (373 Nm).

Canyon’s new Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic complements the 3.6L with a technologically advanced design and control system that supports smoother, more refined performance. Smaller “steps” between the gears as the vehicle accelerates allow the transmission to shift quicker, with almost imperceptible upshifts.

The 8L45 eight-speed also has a wider 7.0 gear ratio that enables a numerically higher first gear ratio — helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering — and numerically lower overdrive ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway. A lower engine speed has two benefits: It can reduce fuel consumption to enhance efficiency and it reduces engine noise for a quieter cabin.

The new powertrain supports a 7,000-pound max trailering rating that is second in the segment only to the Canyon’s available 2.8L Duramax diesel, which is rated at 7,700 pounds.

The 2017 model year updates, including the new V-6 and eight-speed combination, will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.

A Powerful Workhorse for Your Workforce

Chevy has long been associated with powerful pickup trucks and one of the stars of their lineup is the popular Silverado 3500HD Chassis Cab. This truck works so hard you might have to put it on the payroll, and also comes with a few well integrated technology features that aren’t usually the norm for what are considered “work trucks”, making it stand out a little from its competitors.

The Silverado 3500HD Chassis Cab packs a ton of power in a couple of configurations. Review: Knapheide platform bed is versatile and functional

 

It’s a great commercial van. Ample power. Low cabin noise. Great maneuverability. Top notch all the way around. But part of what makes Transit such a great worksite workhorse is its versatility. Available in three roof heights, three lengths, two wheelbases, with three engines options and in cargo van or passenger wagon configurations, there is a seemingly endless list of upfit possibilities.

Case in point, Knapheide’s Value-Master-X (PVMX) platform bed, which was fitted to a 2015 Transit 250 chassis cab I was recently able to drive. Featuring solid steel construction and available in widths of 80 inch for single wheeled vehicles or  96 inch and 102 inch for dual rear wheels, the platform and can be ordered in lengths ranging from 8 feet to 26 feet.

The PVMX comes with different flooring options – wood, steel, diamond plate or Polyboard – and numerous bulkhead styles.

My Transit test unit was equipped with 12 foot platform, 80 inches wide for the single rear wheel unit.

IMG_3415The Polyboard flooring – not susceptible to weathering and cracking – provided a more rugged surface than wood decking, and was lighter than steel flooring. As an added bonus, it looked pretty cool.

The platform featured an LED light kit, an ICC rear bumper and BHG Bulkhead – a drop in rectangular style bulkhead with a punched window for visibility that also featured reinforcing gussets on each side to increase structural integrity

Two 36 inch Roughneck underbody toolboxes were mounted one for each side, as well as an underbody tie down rail. This was more than ample room for my tools of the day: a suitcase and laptop case.

The PVMX is surely to be an attractive option for vocations who need to haul large items on the bed while needing to keep tools and other small accessories handy.

Equipping a Truck for All Seasons

The bitter cold of winter is an excuse for many businesses to shut down. In Alaska, it’s merely the time to switch gears. To continue working through winter, Derek Broderick’s tree removal company added snow plows to two of its trucks.

“The weather here in Alaska dictates a lot of your working season,” says Broderick, owner of BlackHawk Works in North Pole, Alaska. “Everyone is frozen in time in the winter and then everyone comes out in the construction season during the summer.”

After retiring from the military, Broderick started his company with a Ford F-450 used for stump grinding and tree removal during the summer and snow plowing in the winter. Currently, he uses an F-250 and F-450 for snow plowing.

“I use Boss snow plows,” says Broderick. “I can use both plows on either truck since they have the same mount. If one plow goes down, I can flip-flop the plows and use the other one.”

As of last year, he had hired three full-time employees for the summer season. “As I was growing my business, I was working at another company. After about three years, we had such good growth that I decided to focus solely on my business. From 2014 to 2015, we grew by 52%.”

In addition to covering jobs in North Pole, Broderick’s trucks travel to Fairbanks, about 12 miles south, and as far as Delta Junction, about an hour away.
Multi-Use Trucks

Based on its motto “We Grind, We Plow, We Clear,” BlackHawk Works can complete all of these services with its small truck fleet.

After purchasing an F-250 for snow plowing, Broderick added an F-450 with a dump box on the back; it became the company’s chip truck. When he bought a second F-450, Broderick added a custom-made chip box.

“The chip box sits on top of the F-450 flat bed,” says Broderick. “We designed it and the auto body shop built it. It also contains shelving units to store chainsaws and blowers.”

For big jobs requiring two trucks, the F-450 with the dump box can also be used with a temporary chip box. When not used as the second chip truck, this F-450 pulls the stump grinder and stores other equipment for tree removal. The stump grinder is transported by the truck and then self-propelled on wheels, he says.

In addition to trucks, BlackHawk operates several pieces of equipment including two chippers, two stump grinders, and a Caterpillar 299d used for land clearing.
Seasonal Schedule

BlackHawk uses the off-season to maintain its vehicles and equipment. Broderick takes his trucks to his local Ford dealership for routine maintenance checks. Although the vehicles and equipment are still fairly new, there is some wear and tear, he says.

The off-season also gives Broderick and his employees time to rest. The summer season is prime construction time, and Broderick and his team work long hours to take advantage of the longer sunlight hours and warmer weather.

“We go and go since we have so much daylight in the summer,” says Broderick. “On summer solstice, we have 22 hours of sunlight. After summer solstice, you start losing daylight each day up to winter solstice. The prime construction season is usually May through September.”

Different Cab Configurations Explained

Whether you need a basic regular cab truck, a double-cab (what we used to call an extended cab), or a crew-cab truck to seat six adults, we carry a wide selection to help you get the right cab for your needs. The double-cab can carry people in the second seat, but there isn't much room for adults to sit normally, so that is great for added inside storage, and carrying passengers once in a while and for short distances. The crew-cab offers full comfort for six adults and wide doors for easy entry and exit. The regular cab can seat three adults, and would be most comfortable with one or two.
