Build of the all-new EcoTec3 engine found in 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Visitors to the 2013 Vancouver International Auto Show got to see the all-new 2014 Silverado on the Chevrolet show floor. They also got to see licensed technician Conrad Italiano do an all-day build of the EcoTec3 family of engines.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 will deliver more power, more torque and improved fuel efficiency, thanks in part to a trio of all-new EcoTec3 engines designed specifically for the needs of full-size truck customers. The new engine family includes a 4.3L V6, a 5.3L V-8 and a 6.2L V-8.

EcoTec3 engines feature three state-of-the-art technologies -- direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing -- to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions.

"We believe these are the most technologically advanced engines ever offered in light-duty pickups, and they are 100 percent truck -- specifically designed for the way customers use trucks in the real world," said Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer and program manager. "They have all the power and torque needed to confidently handle the tough jobs, and they seamlessly switch to four-cylinder mode to increase efficiency during light-load driving. "This is technology no other truck maker can match, and we offer it in every one of our EcoTec3 engines, for every one of our customers," said Lee. "It is not an extra cost feature. You get our best and most sophisticated technology regardless of trim level."

Coates Hire Comes Out On Top With Isuzu

Each year, the Coates Hire truck fleet travels over 12 million kilometres in Australia the same distance as circumnavigating the world 300 times.

With over 200 national and international branches, Coates Hire’s perfect solution for all kinds of equipment hire needs includes a fleet of over 250 Isuzu trucks.

As Australia’s largest equipment hire company with over 125 years’ experience in the industry and a total staff of 2,500, Coates Hire services customers in a wide range of activities including engineering, building construction and maintenance, mining and resources, manufacturing, government and event staging.

National Transport Manager, Phillip Parsons said the success of the transport hire component of the business, which is run by 250 employees, can be attributed to the hard working Isuzu trucks.

"We have a whole suite of Isuzus ranging from older NKR, NPS and NPS through to FVY and FVZ models," he said.

"We have truck configurations such as flatbed, tilt trays and tippers that can be either hired out to clients or used by us to transport hire equipment to customers."

The flatbed option is ideal for general freight and pallet transport applications. The smaller models, such as the NPS 250, can be driven on a standard car licence.

The tippers have an all-steel body with drop sides, perfect for moving and unloading soil and aggregates. They also have a removable tailgate, which means loads can be easily manoeuvered into position.

According to Phillip, the trucks are used in a wide range of applications when hired out to customers.

"You can see our trucks everywhere including metro, regional and remote areas of Australia."

Whether customers need a vehicle for a couple of hours, days, weeks or longer, Coates Hire is happy to accommodate them.

Apart from hiring out trucks and equipment, Coates Hire also offers delivery of its full range of hire equipment including generators, access, traffic management, earth moving and materials handling.

The most recent truck purchase was an NPR 300 which is used for branch deliveries.

Based on its successful run with its Isuzu fleet, the company took an order of 47 Isuzu trucks, varying in model, at the end of last year and plans to add 27 more in the coming months.

When choosing a new truck, Coates Hire assesses the task it will be used for, and then selects the appropriate model.

Apart from the brand’s reliability, the Isuzu service program was also an important deciding factor when purchasing new Isuzu trucks.

"The range of service and maintenance agreements that Isuzu offers is ideal for the size of our fleet," Phillip said.

"As well as offering dedicated technicians and equipment, Isuzu also provides us with nationwide support through its servicing Dealerships something that is imperative to keep our large business going."

Coates Hire was established in 1885 as a small engineering company based in Melbourne and has grown to be the fifth largest hire equipment company globally.

With operations located in four geographic business units around Australia, the company sees over one million deliveries made every year.

The company’s overseas operations include Coates Offshore in the UK, which provides specialised equipment to offshore oil and gas operations, as well as Coates Hire Indonesia that supports the mining and resources sector.

Ford Adding 2,000-Plus Jobs at Kansas City Assembly to Support Surging F-150 Demand, Ford Transit Launch

  • Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant will add more than 2,000 jobs  to support high demand for Ford F-150 plus the planned production of the all-new Transit family of commercial vehicles starting next summer; more than 1,000 will be new hires
  • Ford F-Series sales up 24 percent in April and 19 percent year to date; full-size truck segment growing three times faster than industry average and is fastest-growing segment this year
  • Ford has reached 75 percent of its goal to create 12,000 hourly jobs in the U.S. by 2015

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 2, 2013 – Ford, the industry’s truck leader, will add more than 2,000 jobs at its Kansas City Assembly Plant to meet surging demand for the Ford F-150 and planned production of the all-new Ford Transit.

“Customer demand for today’s F-150 is strong and continues growing, the truck segment is growing three times faster than the overall industry, the housing market is strengthening, and we are seeing growth in the U.S. economy,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of The Americas. “Our ‘Built Ford Tough’ F-150 is America’s favorite pickup, and we are going to expand operations in Kansas City to ensure we have enough trucks to meet customer demand.”

Ford is adding 900 jobs and a third crew in the third quarter to build F-150. U.S. sales of Ford’s F-Series trucks increased 24 percent in April and 19 percent year to date. Ford also is adding another 1,100 jobs starting in the fourth quarter to prepare for the introduction of the all-new Ford Transit full-size van in 2014.

“For customers who want a modern van that is as tough and smart as the F-Series, the all-new Ford Transit van delivers, with better fuel economy, more capability and the greatest number of technology choices and innovative configurations full-size van buyers have ever seen,” Hinrichs said.

Kansas City Assembly
Kansas City Assembly Plant produces the Ford F-150 Regular, Super and Crew Cab and will produce the Ford Transit. The plant currently has 2,450 hourly workers working on two shifts and will add a third crew in the third quarter.

Ford is investing $1.1 billion to retool and expand the facility for production of both the F-150 and Transit, including a 437,000 sq.-ft. stamping facility and a 78,000 sq.-ft. paint shop.

The new stamping facility was completed in 2012. The paint shop expansion will include installation of the three-wet paint process, which is more environmentally friendly and requires less time than conventional paint processes – without compromising Ford’s paint quality or durability.

“Today we celebrate the commitment to excellence displayed every day by the men and women of Kansas City Assembly Plant," said Jimmy Settles, UAW vice president and director of the National Ford Department. “These additional jobs are the direct result of the dedicated effort our UAW members display every day at facilities all across the country and serve as another reminder of the resilience of American workers and our nation's manufacturing sector.”

With the investment and new jobs in Kansas City, Ford is three-quarters of the way to its plan to create 12,000 hourly jobs in the U.S. by 2015. The company also is investing $16 billion in its U.S. product development and manufacturing operations – including $6.2 billion in plant-specific investments. These actions, including today's announcements, are consistent with Ford’s previous 2013 financial guidance for the Total Company and North America.

Community Impact
The plant expansion has a major impact in the local community and beyond. Kansas City Assembly has more than 250 suppliers nationally and more than 10 suppliers locally who will positively benefit from the addition of a third crew. Additionally, when Transit production starts next year, close to 275 suppliers nationally and six suppliers locally will grow their business. According to the job multiplier effect of nine jobs to every one – more than 18,000 jobs will be created to support the plant.

“Today’s announcement is yet another testament to our successful efforts to revitalize Missouri’s automotive manufacturing industry, which continues to gain steam,” Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said. “This third crew for production of the F-150 will create hundreds of additional manufacturing jobs for workers in this region and ensure Missouri continues to lead the rebirth of the American auto industry for years to come.”

Ford F-150
The “Built Ford Tough” F-150 delivers the segment’s best combination of power, capability, safety and fuel economy.

F-150 is part of the Ford F-Series lineup. Now in its 65th year, F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for 36 consecutive years, the best-selling vehicle in America for 31 consecutive years and the brand with the most trucks on the road with more than 250,000 miles, as certified by Polk.

The Kansas City-built F-150 is the first choice for tradespeople who need the most durable, advanced in the market truck. For example, F-150 leads in a variety of fields, including:

  • 62 percent market share in road and highway maintenance
  • 68 percent share in hazardous materials work
  • 67 percent share in the oil pipeline industry
F-150 also boasts leading safety ratings. F-150’s fully boxed frame, made from high-strength hydroformed steel, provides a backbone built for increased durability and safety. F-150 has earned top safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Overall, F-150 offers customers the broadest lineup in the segment, with 10 models that include work-ready XL, sporty and capable FX, well-balanced XLT, refined and luxurious Limited and the no-compromise off-road SVT Raptor.

The Ford F-150 also features an unrivaled four engine choices, including the advanced 3.5-liter EcoBoost, to help customers find the most fuel-efficient and capable engine to meet their needs. Ford’s patented EcoBoost engine delivers an unmatched combination of best-in-class towing and payload, torque and fuel economy. More than 300,000 EcoBoost engines have been sold for F-150 and it is now Ford’s best-selling truck engine.

Ford Transit
The familiar van that delivers packages or shuttles airport passengers is about to change in a revolutionary way. The all-new Ford Transit will provide tradespeople and businesses with unmatched fuel economy, innovative new configurations and leading versatility in the expanding commercial vehicle market.

Transit is born from nearly a century of hard-earned experience delivering two distinct full-size vans to customers in America, Europe and other global markets. For the U.S., Transit eventually replaces E-Series, first sold in 1961 as Ford Econoline and America’s best-selling commercial van for 34 years. Transit was first sold in 1965. It’s the best-selling commercial van in Europe.

Customers will have more choices than ever from a Ford van. Transit will be offered in three body lengths; two wheelbases; three roof heights. Cargo volume ranges from about 250 to almost 500 cubic feet – more than twice the volume of today’s standard E-Series, saving the customer fuel costs and the time and hassle of a second trip.

Designed and developed to provide efficient service over the long haul, Ford Transit will be at least 25 percent more fuel efficient than today’s E-Series, helping save Transit owners thousands of dollars in fuel costs during its service life.

Transit has been tested to the “Built Ford Tough” truck standards at Ford’s proving grounds and in the hands of real-world fleet customers in North America.

The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter - Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: Now even safer, greener, more economical, and more attractive

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has lent its name to an entire vehicle segment and is a synonym for large vans with around 3.5 tons of GVW all around the globe. The Sprinter has always driven innovations in its segment a tradition that is being continued by the new model. The new Sprinter continues to set standards, boasting five new safety systems, engines that meet the future Euro VI emissions standard, and a striking appearance. Most importantly, however, the van’s excellent low fuel consumption (down to 6.3 liters per 100 km) makes it by far the most efficient vehicle in its segment.

World premiere of new safety systems

The Sprinter has always been a pioneer with regard to driver assistance systems. Five new assistance systems including several van firsts will help reduce the number of accidents even further in the new Sprinter.

The following systems are celebrating their world debut in the Sprinter: Crosswind Assist, which is fitted as standard, and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and Blind Spot Assist, which are both optional. Other new features are Highbeam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. The developers at Mercedes-Benz are convinced that these electronic assistants will play a key role in helping to reduce accidents in the van sector.

As one of the functions of the Electronic Stability Program, Crosswind Assist will be part of the vehicle’s range of standard equipment. Customers will be able to order the other assistance systems as individual options or as components of logically assembled packages. This allows every customer to tailor the Sprinter to its specific area of application.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz has improved the Sprinter’s handling even further. The lowering of the chassis has improved the van’s drag and fuel consumption and makes it easier to load and unload cargo.

World’s first van to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard

The new Sprinter is the world’s first van to meet the future Euro VI emissions standard in all of its engine variants. Euro VI drastically reduces the emission limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx), total hydrocarbons (THC), and particulate mass. The Sprinter achieves the strict limits with the help of its BlueTEC engine and SCR technology that injects AdBlue into the exhaust gas. The technology has already proven its worth in more than 100,000 commercial vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.

The performance of the diesel engines has remained unchanged, encompassing four- and six-cylinder units with outputs ranging from 70 kW (95 hp) to 140 kW (190 hp).

The developers have used the additional exhaust treatment stage to optimize the injection and combustion processes as well as the boost pressure. The results are lower fuel consumption and less combustion noise. The engineers also adjusted the drive system and the ancillary components to enhance fuel efficiency. This applies to the transmission and the rear axle as well as an intelligent generator management system.

As an alternative to the diesel engines, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is also available with a Euro VI compliant supercharged four-cylinder gasoline engine featuring direct injection. The engine generates 115 kW (156 hp) from a total displacement of 1.8 liters. The engine is also available in a natural gas variant with the same performance.

Power is transmitted either by the ECO-Gear six-speed manual transmission or the 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission with lock-up clutch, which is the only system of its kind to be found in a van.

Most economical van in its class

The combination of the highly efficient diesel engines, the optimized powertrain, the longer axle ratio, the ancillary components, and the BlueEFFICIENCY PLUS efficiency package has reduced fuel consumption to a minimum of 6.3 l/100 km (NEDC combined), which is a record value for the Sprinter segment. However, the new Sprinter is extremely economical not only as a result of its high fuel efficiency, but also because it comes with the ASSYST maintenance calculation system as standard in Europe. Thanks to this system, the van’s maintenance intervals, which were already long, have been extended to up to 60,000 km.

Enhanced exterior and interior

The new Sprinter’s appearance has also been substantially enhanced and made more striking. In line with Mercedes-Benz’ current design, the van’s radiator grille is now more vertical and confident. The grille’s three slats are perforated and wedge-shaped. Not only does this change create a more dynamic impression, it also increases the airflow. In addition, a frame surrounds the brand’s distinctive radiator grille, making it more prominent.

Another change involves the headlights, which are now more angular. The covers on the reflector housings are particularly striking, dividing the headlights into separate segments. The new hood is higher and the more distinctly shaped bumpers have finely worked lower edges similar to those found on SUVs. The new Sprinter is immediately recognizable from the rear, due to its double-segmented taillights.

The widely acknowledged exemplary interior has also been further enhanced. Comfort has been boosted by the new upholstery and seat coverings, the thicker steering wheel makes gripping easier, and the fresh air nozzles boast chrome applications if the customer opts for a multifunctional steering wheel. The knob of the gearshift lever has been redesigned as well.

The Sprinter is also fitted with a new-generation radio system that equips the van not only with state-of-the-art electronic entertainment features and Bluetooth telephone equipment (including a telephone keypad and phonebook), but also the Becker MAP PILOT navigation system.

Millions of kilometers of testing; orders can be placed beginning in June

The developers of the new Sprinter made sure that the van was thoroughly tested. More than eight million kilometers of endurance testing and extensive customer trials in everyday use had fully demonstrated the new Sprinter’s high quality by the time series production was launched.

Customers can order the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter beginning in June 2013; deliveries will commence in September.

This 'Billy Cart' Doesnt Need Pushing - Isuzu FRR 500 Factory Tipper

For haulage and excavation specialist Enzo Morabito, his new Isuzu FRR 500 factory tipper is just what the doctor ordered for the timely transport of small to medium material and equipment loads.

Affectionately known as ‘Billy Cart’ a name emblazoned on the truck’s front panel the new addition provides the ‘get up and go’ power that Enzo’s excavation company, Boss Haulage, needs.

Established in 1998, the ACT-based Boss Haulage is a multi-faceted operation built around a team of professional specialists in haulage, earthmoving, road maintenance, equipment hire and materials supply.

According to Enzo, the tipper’s SiTEC Series III 205 engine, rated at 151 kW @ 2,600 RPM and with 637 Nm @ 1,600 RPM, provides that extra ‘oomph’ to transport heavy loads of various materials and equipment up to 6000 kgs.

This is Enzo’s first Isuzu and from all accounts it won’t be the last.

According to Enzo, the truck drives like a car despite its size.

"The easy control provided by the truck’s steering (power assisted recirculating ball) makes the drive quite pleasurable," he said.

"The ride is smooth and comfortable (double acting hydraulic shock absorbers on the front axle)."

The truck is painted in the Boss Haulage company colour an audacious red with orange and white pin striping which makes it an impressive looking vehicle. Complementing the cab is a dark grey tipping body also with pinstripe highlights.

Capping off the visual bonanza are chrome rims, tinted windows and a checker plate toolbox which all help to turn heads around town and advertise the Boss Haulage brand along the way.

While Boss Haulage has six other non-Isuzu trucks in its fleet ranging from medium and heavy duty vehicles, the Isuzu is a welcome addition due to the truck’s nimbleness and easy-handling; it is used in all sorts of conditions, both on and off road, with the majority of the time delivering various materials to construction sites.

Together Enzo’s tipper trucks provide the flexibility needed for doing asphalt works and delivering landscape and quarry products.

In addition to haulage, the company also specialises in earthworks, excavator and equipment hire, road maintenance and asphalt works.

A surprised Nikki King wins lifetime achievement award at CV Show

At this year’s CV Show at the NEC Birmingham, Trade Van Driver, the UK’s top van magazine for small business users, presented a ‘surprised’ Nikki King with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.

Initially, Nikki was led to believe that she was just observing the presentation of another award that was being given to Isuzu Motors Europe’s Chairman, Masayuki Murata, for Isuzu’s 3.5t Grafter truck. However, Trade Van Driver’s editor, Matthew Eisenegger sprung a pleasant surprise on Nikki by telling her that the 2013 Awards Panel also wished to recognise her own career achievements in the commercial vehicle industry with a separate award.

According to the judges, “Nikki is an extraordinarily charismatic businesswoman who has risen to the top of her profession, in a business sector traditionally dominated by men, through her sheer talent and determination. This award celebrates her achievements before her official retirement in August later this year.”

The editor of Trade Van Driver Matthew Eisenegger presented Nikki with her award, as part of a series of TVD 2013 Awards presented at the CV Show. Now in their second year, the TVD Awards are not only judged by journalists from the publication, but also by a panel of readers who use light commercial vehicles as part of their everyday business.

Commenting on this latest industry recognition, Nikki King said, “The presentation of this award definitely caught me unawares and the publication did well to keep me in the dark until the last minute. However, to be recognised by industry colleagues is extremely gratifying, and also very humbling; I genuinely would like to thank everyone at ‘Trade Van Driver’ as well as the judging panel for the award, which I will treasure in my retirement.”
