Mobile charging truck rescues depleted EVs
An electric vehicle (EV) depletes its battery and is stuck on the side of the road without a charger anywhere in sight.
Getting towed is an option, but AAA has even a better solution: an electric vehicle mobile charging unit.
The white Ford F-250 looks like a utility truck, but make no mistake, it features that familiar an iconic AAA logo on the doors.
When a AAA member calls for service, the truck shows up with level two and level three charging options.
AAA will provide 10 to 15 minutes of charge time, which they report will provide three to 15 miles of driving range, or at least enough to make it to the next charging station.
Since being deployed in 2011, AAA’s mobile charging trucks have had thousands of service calls, according to electrek.co.
Not surprisingly, the charger trucks are available in metro areas where electric vehicles are used the most, which currently includes Denver, Los Angeles, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle.

2016 GMC Canyon Diesel Tows, Camps Like a Champ
Ever since GM announced that the midsize Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks would receive a diesel engine, there's really been only one question on my mind: How well will they tow? I mean, we're not talking big, heavy-duty pickups with enormous V-8 diesel engines, dualie axles and jake brakes here. These are smaller, compact trucks that are used more as lifestyle vehicles than big workhorses. And while diesels are common in this style of truck all over the world, we haven't seen one in a smaller American pickup in decades.

Chevy’s Truck Legends offers benefits for loyal customers
Chevrolet has launched Truck Legends, an exclusive community recognizing loyal Chevy truck customers.
Currently, Truck Legends is open to all Texas residents who have more than 100,000 miles on their Chevy truck or have purchased or leased more than one new Chevy truck in their lifetime. The program will roll out nationwide in 2017.
Truck Legends pays tribute and offers benefits to customers who Chevy reports have helped to make its pickups the fastest-growing truck brand for 2016.
“We know there is a story behind every mile, every truck and every customer,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet truck marketing director. “The Truck Legends program is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to our loyal customers, and curating some of their stories.”
Truck Legends comes in preparation of an important milestone for Chevy.
“In 2018 we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of our first Chevrolet truck, and that event would not be complete without recognizing the customers who have made Chevrolet part of the fabric of America,” Piszar said. “The stories from our Truck Legends will play a key part in celebrating the next hundred years of Chevrolet trucks.”
Truck Legends members will receive exclusive Truck Legends memorabilia. This includes Chevy Truck Legends hats, Truck Legends decals and, if applicable, decals celebrating mileage milestones ranging from 100,000 to 1 million miles.
Participating dealers may also offer additional benefits to members, ranging from free car washes to discounts on oil changes and Chevrolet accessories for their trucks.
Chevrolet will periodically offer Truck Legends members once-in-a-lifetime experiences leveraging Chevrolet’s other partnerships. These experiences could range from front-row seats at concerts, to attending sold-out Major League Baseball events, to getting a sneak peek at new Chevrolet models.
The Truck Legends program is free to join for individuals who have more than 100,000 miles on their Chevrolet truck or have purchased or leased two or more new Chevy trucks in their lifetime. Eligible vehicles include:
- Silverado and Silverado HD (and past C/K trucks)
- Colorado (and past S-10 trucks)
- Tahoe
- Suburban
- Avalanche

Cummins and Peterbilt to Team Up on SuperTruck II
Innovative Research Team
will Develop Cost-Effective Truck
will Develop Cost-Effective Truck
and Powertrain Technologies
that Significantly
that Significantly
Increase Fuel-Efficiency
COLUMBUS, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 1, 2016-- Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced today that it will partner with Peterbilt Motors Company, a division of PACCAR (Nasdaq: PCAR) to develop and demonstrate technologies under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SuperTruck II program.
“Cummins and the entire team is focused on developing technologies that can transform the industry and help our customers be more successful while continuing to be great stewards of the environment. Combining some of the best technical minds available for this project, I am confident that we can reach our goals and deliver results that are a win for our customers, a win for our organizations and a win for the environment,” said Wayne Eckerle, Cummins Vice President of Research and Technology.
“Peterbilt is committed to continue pushing the industry’s technologies to best serve our customers and the environment,” said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “The success of the original SuperTruck program will be the groundwork for SuperTruck II. Our engineers are focused on improving engine efficiency, aerodynamics and other systems technologies to meet Greenhouse Gas (GHG) requirements for model years 2021, 2024 and 2027.”
Subject to appropriations, the DOE will fund four projects to develop and demonstrate cost-effective technologies that more than double the freight efficiency of Class 8 trucks, commonly known as 18-wheelers, over the 2009 baseline. The goal of the program is to accelerate the pace of reductions in petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the nation’s freight transportation system.
For SuperTruck II, the Cummins–Peterbilt team will focus on breakthrough advances in Class 8 vehicle freight efficiency technologies that are cost-effective enough to be used in everyday real-world applications. Building on the solid foundation of SuperTruck I, Cummins will develop and demonstrate 55 percent or greater engine Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) at a 65 mile per hour cruise condition and the full team will demonstrate a greater than 100 percent improvement in vehicle Freight-Ton Economy (FTE) over the 2009 baseline vehicle. BTE quantifies the fraction of the fuel's chemical energy that is converted into useful work by the engine system. FTE quantifies the mass and distance of freight transported per unit of fuel consumed.
“These investments will accelerate the development of innovative vehicle technologies that will save businesses and consumers money at the pump, cut carbon emissions, and strengthen our economy,” said Acting Assistant Secretary David Friedman. “SuperTruck II builds on the successful SuperTruck I program, which has already led to more than twenty fuel saving technologies that have reached the commercial market.”
Cummins and Peterbilt teamed together for SuperTruck I, first demonstrating more than 50 percent BTE and analytically defining technologies needed to achieve 55 percent BTE. Their demonstration tractor-trailer averaged a 76 percent increase in drive cycle FTE and a 43 percent reduction in GHG emissions versus a 2009 baseline truck -- all significant improvements. As evidence of the favorable market impact that DOE partnered research and development continues to have, many of the engine and drivetrain efficiency improvements and vehicle power demand reductions pioneered in SuperTruck I are headed for production with the latest model year 2017 product offerings by Cummins, Peterbilt and its key product delivery partners.
The full team of project partners, each playing a vital role, includes Peterbilt, Eaton and Bridgestone. Other key suppliers, labs and universities making critical contributions toward the project goals include Great Dane, Exa Corporation, Meritor, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Purdue University. The team’s customer council, led by Walmart Transportation, LLC, will provide important information on routes, technology needs, and critical market input, aimed at fostering more rapid market adoption of SuperTruck technologies.

The New 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 | The Art of Quiet
A premium-grade truck interior should be seen and felt, but not heard. That’s why a quiet, well-insulated cabin is a hallmark of the new 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. Take a look at how paying attention to small details while designing the new Sierra played a big part in elevating comfort within a pickup truck cab.
Westport HPDI 2.0 Int'l Launch in 2017
- Europe or Perhaps China to Be First, and It Won’t be the Cummins ISX:
- Goal Is a Product Preserving Diesel Performance with Minimal Changes
Westport's HPDI 2.0 injectors are to be available to fit the diesel-cycle engines produced by multiple manufacturers.
HPDI technology allows trucks with heavy duty diesel engines to run primarily on liquefied natural gas. Westport placed upwards of 1,200 first-generation systems on Paccar (Kenworth and Peterbilt) trucks with 15-liter Cummins ISX engines, beginning in 2006.
HPDI 2.0 will be placed via other engine manufacturers, says Jim Arthurs, executive VP for medium and heavy-duty truck strategies at Westport. “We’re not working with Cummins,” he says, but with several different truck and/or engine OEMs.
Factory Installs
The plan is to provide fuel system componentry – primarily injectors and onboard natural gas fuel storage and engine delivery hardware – to be factory-installed. It’s a far cheaper option than the Westport-installed first-generation systems.
“It was quite expensive, the way that it was done,” Arthurs says. “The economics didn’t really hang together.”
Key to GHG Reduction Compliance
HPDI 2.0 will help manufacturers meet their greenhouse gas reduction requirements.
Westport Fuel Systems will offer a fully integrated HPDI 2.0 package to truck OEMs.
“HPDI 2.0 has been proven to deliver diesel-like performance and fuel efficiency while providing a reduction in GHG emissions of 18-20% compared to current diesel engines,” Westport says.
And, citing a source in Germany, Westport said this month that “European original equipment manufacturers will not be able to avoid implementing HPDI technology in order to fulfill GHG limit values.” Europe, says Arthurs, is a “priority.”
Environmental and Economic Benefits
“As GHG rules tighten, natural gas fueled vehicles may cost less than compliant conventional fuel vehicles, creating a compelling economic argument even without factoring in fuel savings,” Arthurs says in last week’s Westport GHG release.
“Fleet owners can focus on the environmental benefits of natural gas vehicles now and reap the economic benefits in the future,” he said.
LNG-Only to Start
The 2.0 product – a “true OEM version of HPDI” – will debut on engines in the 10- to 15-liter range, Arthurs says. “As launched it will be LNG-only,” he told F&F, explaining that vaporizing pressurized LNG to the 3,500-plus PSI needed for engine operation is far cheaper than boosting the pressure of CNG fuel onboard the vehicle. Operators committed to CNG fuel may be offered a CNG-capable HPDI 2.0 option in the future.
Early Adaptor: Canada's Transport Robert committed to LNG-fueled trucks with Westport's first-generation HPDI technology in late 2010.
Early Adaptor: Canada’s Transport Robert committed to LNG-fueled trucks with Westport’s first-generation HPDI technology in late 2010.
Westport’s key HPDI 2.0 development drivers are performance and simplicity. “We’re trying to make the engine perform exactly as it did as a diesel,” Arthurs says. And, “we are trying to change as little as we can on the engine and on the truck.”
The Pump Has Made Major Strides’
Westport is perfecting “Phase 3” injectors for HPDI 2.0, as well as a proprietary pump that will be submerged in the onboard LNG fuel tank. “The pump has made major strides,” he says, since the first HPDI trucks were deployed ten years ago.
Finally, as part of the ramp-up to launch, “We’re starting trials with customers,” Arthurs said yesterday.

Reading Support Vital For Reitmeir"s New Fleet
Guest post by Ken Keller
The City of Portland, Oregon is known for its microbreweries, coffeehouses and its eco-friendliness; Portland is often called "The Greenest City in America". Delivering commercial HVAC services to this metropolitan area of over 2 million people is no small enterprise.
Based in Portland, Reitmeier is a full-spectrum Commercial HVAC and Energy Management Services provider to Oregon and the SW Washington area. In business since 1984, Reitmeier’s diverse client base spans such projects as data centers, hospitals, commercial high-rise offices and historic buildings, as well as industrial facilities.
This year Reitmeier converted their entire service fleet over to Ford Transits Cutaways equipped with customized Reading Truck Body Classic Service Vans (CSV). Reitmeier’s President, Jeff Nusz, has high praise for the Reading CSV. “We have been using standard vans for 35 years. This fleet conversion was a big change. We wanted to make a statement in the marketplace and position our brand as something unique,” Jeff said. “We are the only company in our market that uses Reading products exclusively. Our customers really like the look of our decaled Reading body. The unique visibility is driving new clients to our doorstep.”
Reading support was vital to get Reitmeier’s new fleet operational. “We had a compliance problem concerning the venting of flammable gases. Reading solved this design problem before our first delivery. By customizing a rear compartment with venting, Reading solved that problem, and at no additional costs.”
Jeff commented on the efficiency of their local Reading authorized upfitter, Pacific Service Center (PSC). “Our vans are now shipped separately and upfitted by Pacific Service Center. We work directly with Jeff and Robyn at PSC to solve any problems we encounter. PSC handles warrant claims. Delivery time has actually sped up. This process is really seamless now,” Jeff said.
Robyn Benedetti, Vice President of Operations, has seen the difference that Reading’s CSV body has made to Reitmeier’s commitment to a goal of zero waste. “The CSV aluminum body is in complete alignment with our sustainability practices as it uses renewable material and is 100% recyclable,” Robyn said. “Due to the aluminum body, we have expanded cargo space providing greater payload. Shelving was modified by Reading to increase ease of access and organization.”
A complete audit of Reitmeier’s fuel consumption using historical data and Ford/Telogis telematics information from the new fleet will be made soon. But Jeff is seeing the savings already. “Our 2016 fuel budget is based on 2015’s fuel consumption. As of now, we are 13% to 15% under budget from where we were this time last year, “Jeff reports.
In an effort to ensure future availability of qualified technicians, Reitmeier created Reitmeier University two years ago. Reitmeier University’s two-year continuing education program was developed to train and certify new Reitmeier employees in commercial HVAC services. After completing classroom instruction, each new hire is partnered with an experienced technician in a structured mentorship. Reitmeier, with the support of Reading’s CSVs, is not only ready for the future, but is actively investing in it.
