UD Trucks Releases All-New Condor PK/PW Series


— Combining heavy-duty truck cab comfort with medium-duty truck economy —

UD Trucks Corporation (formerly Nissan Diesel Motor Co., Ltd.) announced the nationwide sales launch today of the all-new Condor PK (9-ton class payload) and Condor PW (12-ton class payload) series following the execution of a full model change.

The newly released Condor PK and Condor PW models feature a new cab design that expresses a unified family identity with the Quon heavy-duty truck series along with the nimble maneuverability characteristic of medium-duty trucks and achieves outstanding aerodynamic performance, safety and comfort. In addition, the new Condor models share the same axle parts and brake parts with the Quon heavy-duty truck series to construct suspension and brake systems for enhanced peace of mind.

Powering the Condor models is the self-developed GH7 engine equipped with a newly developed common rail system with a higher maximum fuel injection pressure. For the first time, the Condor series is now fitted with the UD Particulate Cleaning (UDPC) system and a urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. These emission control technologies for reducing particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were previously refined on the Quon heavy-duty truck series. As a result, the new Condor models deliver better fuel economy combined with improved environmental performance that complies with Japan's 2009 exhaust emission regulations.

Moreover, like the Quon heavy-duty truck series, "UD Genuine After Market Product" which is comprehensive after-the-sale service product is set out, and the new Condor models come with, as standard equipment, the "Fuel Economy King" system that advises the driver on driving techniques for improving fuel economy and a multifunction display with a newly added function for monitoring the vehicle's operational status via the Internet. These features are fitted to further strengthen the support functions for improving operation rate, fuel-efficient driving and safe driving.

1. Major Features


(1) All-new cab design

・ The cab is executed in a simple, clean design that expresses a unified family identity with the Quon heavy-duty truck series as well as the nimble maneuverability characteristic of medium-duty trucks. This all-new cab design projects a dynamic, rugged image of a tough truck designed for work.


(2) Improved aerodynamic performance, safety and comfort achieved with the new cab

1. The aerodynamic design techniques honed on the Quon heavy-duty truck series were utilized to reshape the cab front end, bumper, roof and back corner panels for reduced air resistance.

2. The cab width was increased by 14 mm over that of the previous models, and the ample distance between the driver’s seat and the top of the windshield provides comfortable head room. These and other improvements contribute to enhanced cab comfort.

3. Visibility has been improved by discontinuing the center sash on the window glass on both sides.

4. Crash safety performance has been further improved. The high-rigidity cab suppresses deformation of the cab structures around the occupants in the event of a collision to ensure their survival space. Knee protectors have also been newly adopted to reduce the impact to the knees and thighs.


(3) Adoption of newly developed GH7 engine

1. The fuel economy of the engine itself has been improved by adopting a newly developed common rail system that raises the maximum fuel injection pressure to 2000 bar. All of the 9-ton class payload Condor PK models meet Japan's fuel efficiency standard for heavy-duty vehicles.

2. Power performance has been improved by adopting a variable nozzle turbocharger (VNT) that improves low-rpm torque to achieve a flat high torque curve across the entire operating range from low to high speed.


(4) First Condor series application of PM and NOx reduction systems

・ The UDPC system and urea SCR system used on the latest generation of the Quon have been adopted on the new Condor models to reduce PM and NOx emissions. These emission control technologies combine with the newly developed GH7 engine to reduce PM and NOs emissions so as to comply with Japan's 2009 exhaust emission regulations.


(5) Brake and suspension systems for greater peace of mind

・ The Condor models share the same full air brakes, brake lining, axle parts and other components with the Quon heavy-duty truck series to construct brake and suspension systems for greater peace of mind.


(6) Enhanced support functions for improving operation rate, fuel-efficient driving and safe drive.

1. Like the latest generation of the Quon, "UD Genuine After Market Product" which is comprehensive after-the-sale service product is set out to improve operation rate.

2. The Condor models are fitted with the "Fuel Economy King" guidance system that uses voice messages and screen images to advise the driver on driving techniques for improving fuel economy. Isuzu Reliability Is A Winner With Wollongong City Council


With an infrastructure maintenance budget of almost $70 million for the 2010-11 financial year, Wollongong Council’s City Works staff are responsible for repairing and maintaining roads, footpaths, cycle-ways, car parks, buildings and other assets throughout the municipality.

To get the job done they need reliable vehicles that can handle a range of demands in both suburban and semi-rural settings; it’s therefore no coincidence that more than 90 per cent of the city’s truck fleet is manufactured by Isuzu.

Wollongong Council’s City Works Engineering Services Coordinator, Mark Mills, says Isuzu trucks have proven popular with his organization because of their all-round suitability for council’s operational needs.

"Our aim is to buy something that’s fit-for-purpose," Mr Mills said.

"The last thing we want to do is modify or change the manufacturer’s product. We aim to purchase a product that meets our requirements as closely as possible."

The Council’s trucks are used in a variety of applications ranging from parks and general maintenance to construction, repairs and asset refurbishment.

The fleet also includes two unique trucks based on FRR 600 and NQR 450 chassis – the former employed as a field refuelling truck and the latter as a mobile plant servicing truck.

"We’ll use the field refuelling truck to fuel major items of plant on site such as our waste handling and construction-type equipment and other vehicles that can’t be driven to a service station," Mr Mills said.

"It’s specified with a bulk diesel tank with a 4,500 litre capacity, fuel dispensing and storage areas, its own greasing unit and low voltage/high intensity lighting.

"This lighting is used when we have emergencies like bushfires where the truck will be working through the night supplying fuel to emergency services mobile units in a fire area."

The Council’s NQR 450 mobile plant servicing truck carries all the equipment needed to conduct plant maintenance in the field and attend vehicle breakdowns.

"It pretty much has everything imaginable on it," Mr Mills said.

"There’s a 600-litre tank built within the centre of the chassis rail which is used to carry oil removed from Council’s major plant.

"This is great for occupational health and safety and the environment. Instead of lugging around barrels of oil our employees plug a hose from the servicing truck into the plant’s oil sump to suck the oil out. It’s all nice and clean."

The mobile plant servicing truck is based on an NQR 450 service body and features pneumatic hose reels, a dual battery system for jump starting machinery, a compressor, a pneumatic greasing reel and drum, and storage cupboards.

Truck body fabrication is handled by Berry Howe Industries (BH Industries) in Unanderra, which works alongside the Council and Isuzu Dealer, Dwyers Truck Centre, to specify vehicles before delivery.

"We’ll oversee the project management after going to BH Industries with our Isuzu representative to discuss layout and specification," Mr Mills said.

"BH Industries has fabricated the majority of bodies we’ve received over the past 10 years and their workmanship is excellent."

Aside from maintaining its 75-strong fleet of trucks, Wollongong Council is responsible for ensuring 18 of the New South Wales Rural Fire Services (NSWRFS) Isuzu trucks are ready for deployment throughout the year.

The Council works to keep the NSWRFS trucks roadworthy, safe for operation, fit for purpose, and covered by after-hours support service.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 25, 2010 – If you were cruising up and down Woodward Avenue during last week’s Dream Cruise, chances are you did a double-take at Marygrove Awnings’ Ford Transit Connect.

No, that was not a misprint. It’s true.

Among the tens of thousands of spiffed-up new and classic cars garnering oohs and aahs from the crowd at one of the largest automotive events in the world was a rather unique-looking Ford Transit Connect wrapped from front to back with Marygrove’s distinctive logo and sporting colorful, striped roof-mounted awnings that extended out from the vehicle on both sides.

Mike Falahee, owner of Marygrove Awnings, says the cruise down Woodward Avenue generated a lot of interest in the Transit Connect – and in his company.

“It’s amazing how much attention it gets. People were coming up just to see the vehicle,” he said. “But they weren’t just looking at the Transit Connect, they were inquiring about our products as well.”

The Marygrove Awnings Transit Connect was custom designed to be a mobile showroom for the Livonia, Mich.-based business, which is one of the largest retractable awning companies in the country. Falahee says the vehicle has helped improve sales by 15 percent since its purchase in March.
“The vehicle is paying for itself time and time again,” he said. “And the reason is because customers can touch and feel the product and see how it works. You can’t do that if a guy walks into your home or business with a catalog.”

The roof-mounted awnings actually demonstrate the product. One side shows the manual operation of the awning, and the other side shows the motorized function.

“What’s nice about having the display up on the roof of the Transit Connect is that it gives enough height so that our customers can get underneath the awning and really feel the comfort of the awning when it is projected,” said Falahee.

“And by taking the Transit Connect to a customer’s home, we can actually place the awning in the same direction of their patio. If they have a western exposure, for example, the Transit Connect is so maneuverable we can easily turn the vehicle sideways so that they can get a feel for the element of shade at a particular time of day,” he said.

Marygrove Awnings conducts business in Southeastern Michigan, Texas and Ohio. Currently, the company has two Transit Connect sales vehicles – one in Michigan and one in Texas.

“Our vehicle in Texas has even more bells and whistles, including an onboard computer,” said Falahee, referring to Ford Work Solutions™, an in-dash computer that allows employees to access appointment scheduling and billing information online. “We also installed a slide-out 30-inch flat screen television inside one of the doors so that we can show videos of various awning applications. It’s ideal for home and garden shows.”

Falahee says the company recently purchased two more Transit Connects.
“It’s been an extremely great product for us,” he said. “We’re very happy with it.”

According to Len Deluca, director, Ford Commercial Vehicles, Marygrove Awnings’ experience with the Transit Connect shows what businesses can accomplish with creativity and imagination.

“The Marygrove Transit Connect is not only cool, but it is another example of the vehicle’s versatility to meet the needs of our commercial customers,” he said.

DAYTON, Ohio – DMAX Ltd., a 60-40 joint venture between General Motors Co. and Isuzu Motors Ltd., today celebrated 10 years of making award-winning diesel engines.

In ceremonies attended by community and government leaders, company officials marked cumulative production of 1.2 million engines since July 2000. DMAX is the exclusive manufacturer of the award-winning Duramax diesel engine that powers Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups and Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full size vans.

“Over our company’s 10-year history, the Duramax diesel engine has become a success story and the pride of loyal Duramax owners around the world,” said Maho Mitsuya, DMAX chief executive officer. “We’re proud of the role we’ve played in producing the leading reputation for quality, reliability and durability in the heavy-duty truck market.”

A panel of experts recently selected the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3/4-ton heavy-duty and the Sierra one-ton heavy-duty, both powered by the new Duramax, as best overall diesel-powered trucks in the 2010 Heavy-Duty Shootout conducted by pickuptrucks.com.

DMAX today also announced a major environmental commitment for the facility – establishing it as a landfill-free operation by Oct. 1. The operation will join 69 GM facilities globally whose manufacturing wastes are recycled, reused or converted to energy. No waste from normal plant operations is sent to a landfill.

“Many manufacturing plants generate waste along with their products, but at the DMAX plant, diesel engines with fewer emissions are our only output,” Mitsuya said. “All manufacturing wastes generated at our facility will be recycled or reused in some way.”

GM announced in 2008 that it intended to convert half of its major manufacturing facilities worldwide into landfill-free operations by the end of 2010. GM is currently 95 percent toward delivering on that commitment.

GM was among the first organizations – and to date is the only auto manufacturer – inducted into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise Hall of Fame, recognizing ongoing outstanding waste reduction and recycling efforts.

The all-new Duramax engine design contributes to the environmental accomplishments while featuring significantly more torque and higher horsepower, 11 percent better highway fuel economy and substantially reduced emissions.

“The 2011 Duramax engine produces 63 percent fewer emissions than the previous model and also can run on B20 biodiesel fuel,” said Rick Spina, GM vehicle line executive for full-size trucks. “Reduced vehicle emissions, combined with the DMAX plant's certification as a landfill-free facility, provide evidence as to GM's ongoing commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.”

The Duramax engine is a benchmark for reliability and durability as well as competitive horsepower, torque and quietness within the heavy-duty diesel pickup industry.

“The bottom line is that the DMAX engine plant built more than 1.2 million engines in 10 years with a track record of quality that sets them apart from other manufacturers,” Spina said. “Many of our loyal Duramax owners have hundreds of thousands of miles on their engines today.”

Now, I hardly ever put anything in this blog about cars, but I was very impressed with this video. Since I spent most of my life in the automobile business and I've been a sales manager in one form or another since 1975, training to do presentations has always been a focus. Here's why this video impressed me from a sales perspective--and this applies to almost any kind of selling:

1. The greeting was excellent, real and in good spirits.
2. The vehicle was brought to the customer at the customer's convenience.
3. This is a familiar area for the customer, so they are much more comfortable.
4. THERE WERE ONLY A FEW KEY POINTS MADE. Some salespeople just love to talk about all the features, benefits, this and that and the other. People don't need that many things to make a decision. Frankly, the more you talk, the further the sale gets from you in general.
5. The demonstration was completely in flow with the rest of the conversation--and, this is key: it was conversational.
6. He treated the customer as a friend, yet not too personal. He was comfortable and that flows easily to the customer.
7. This was obviously not the time to close the sale, so there was not attempt to do so. This was a demonstration and effectively serves as a taste, a sniff, a social get together. As this, it is effective as a convincer of the sales person, the dealership, the product, and the experience.

I want to say, BRAVO! Well done. I know it was staged, but it was very well done and I would highly recommend this approach and please keep in mind not to tell too much. People have a hard enough time trying to decide and more information is usually not the deciding factor.

New engine, more power

Ford tapped into a bit of its proud racing heritage to create the new 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine, which uses big-bore architecture to produce impressive horsepower and torque. The new gasoline engine delivers 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque and provides improved maximum trailer towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

“This engine has tons of torque and already has been proven in the field with both the F-150 SVT Raptor and Super Duty,” said Mike Harrison, V8 engine program manager. “The exhaust for the Ford Harley-Davidson edition has been specially tuned to feature a throaty V8 rumble customers will love.”

Benefits of the new 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine include:

• SOHC valvetrain with roller-rocker shafts: The single overhead camshaft (SOHC) per cylinder head design results in a stiff valvetrain that allows optimized camshaft lift profiles and results in great low-speed torque. The roller-rocker shafts allow valve angles to be splayed, resulting in optimized intake and exhaust port layout for better breathing.
• Dual-equal variable cam timing: Intake and exhaust valve opening and closing events are phased at the same time to optimize fuel economy and performance throughout the engine speed range and throttle positions.
• Two spark plugs per cylinder: Due to the large bore size, two spark plugs per cylinder are used to more efficiently burn the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber, enabling better fuel economy and increased engine torque. The twin plugs also help the engine maintain a smooth, stable idle.
• Dual knock sensors: A knock sensor on each bank of cylinders of the V8 engine allows the spark timing of each cylinder to be individually optimized real-time, throughout the engine speed range. The engine learns the optimum timing via an adaptive algorithm.

Taking convenience to the next level

The 2011 Ford Harley-Davidson™ F-150 adds plenty of technology options to give customers what they are looking for. Key to helping customers take advantage of all the capability offered by the Harley-Davidson F-150 is a standard 4.2-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) productivity screen.
This screen offers menu options, giving the customer important information related to fuel economy and towing performance. The menu is navigated through a five-way button on the steering wheel and is positioned between the tachometer and speedometer.

Additionally, the 2011 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 comes equipped with a standard voice-activated Navigation System that integrates several functions including voice-recognition destination entry, climate control and SIRIUS® Satellite Radio into one easy-to-use system, displaying them on an 8-inch touch screen.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 12, 2010 – Ford Motor Company is teaming with Detroit Edison, Xtreme Power and the state of Michigan to establish one of the largest solar power generation systems in the state at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant.

The renewable energy captured by the project’s primary solar energy system will help power the production of fuel-efficient small cars, including Ford’s all-new Focus and Focus Electric going into production in 2011, and a next-generation hybrid vehicle and a plug-in hybrid vehicle coming in 2012. A secondary, smaller solar energy system will be integrated at a later date to power lighting systems at Michigan Assembly.

The combined systems are expected to give Michigan Assembly the largest solar power array in Michigan and save an estimated $160,000 per year in energy costs. Installation of the system begins later this year.
“With this solar energy system, we will be able to gain vital understanding about the integration of renewable power, smart-grid technologies and energy storage at an industrial facility,” said Jim Tetreault, Ford vice president, North America Manufacturing. “This project is a part of the transformation of Michigan Assembly from a large SUV factory to a modern, flexible, and sustainable small car plant.”

SolarCurrents and the future of sustainability in Michigan

Ford will work with Detroit Edison to install a 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel system at Michigan Assembly. Xtreme Power of Austin, Texas, is supplying its Dynamic Power Resource on-site energy storage and power management system.

The solar energy installation is part of Detroit Edison’s pilot SolarCurrents program that calls for photovoltaic systems to be installed on customer rooftops or property over the next five years to generate 15 megawatts of electricity throughout Southeast Michigan.

The Michigan Assembly project is made possible by a $3 million investment by Detroit Edison’s Solar Currents program, a $2 million grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission in support of the state’s smart-grid initiative, and approximately $800,000 from Ford.

“Our partnership with Ford is just the latest example of how our companies have worked together to power the economic engine of Southeast Michigan,” said Trevor Lauer, Detroit Edison vice president, Marketing & Renewables. “Building solar energy systems on the scale we’re pursuing will increase demand for these technologies, and we’re working with the governor’s office and various economic development organizations to attract renewable energy manufacturers and green jobs to Michigan.”

A model for sustainable energy use

Michigan Assembly will operate on a blend of renewable and conventional electricity. The renewable energy collected by the solar system will go directly into the energy-efficient microgrid to help provide power to the plant. When the plant is inactive, such as holidays, the collected solar energy will go into the energy storage system for later use, providing power during periods of insufficient or inconsistent sunlight.

Michigan Assembly’s energy storage system will be able to recharge from the grid during off-peak hours when energy is available at a lower cost. This in turn will provide inexpensive power during peak operating hours when the cost per kilowatt-hour is higher, and reduce peak demand on the grid.

“We share a commitment with Ford to fostering an environmentally sustainable model of energy use in the U.S., and this joint project is indicative of just how far we’ve come,” said Carlos Coe, CEO, Xtreme Power. “We are proud to work together to help transform vehicle manufacturing into a sustainable process powered by clean, renewable energy.”

Solar Power to be used for electric vehicle battery charging

Ford also will install 10 electric vehicle-charging stations at Michigan Assembly to demonstrate advanced battery charging technologies using renewable energy and other smart-grid advances. The stations will be used to recharge electric switcher trucks that transport parts between adjacent facilities. Xtreme Power will provide an active power management system on the charging stations. Ford also will demonstrate the possibility for using electrified vehicle batteries as stationary power storage devices after their useful life as vehicle power sources is over.

“Ford is strongly committed to its sustainability strategy to support positive social change and reduce the environmental impact of its products and facilities,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. “Michigan Assembly is the latest Ford manufacturing facility to utilize renewable power for production.”

Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre in the United Kingdom was the first automotive plant in the world to obtain all of its electrical power needs from on-site wind turbines. In addition, Ford’s Bridgend Engine Plant in Wales was the first site retrofitted with one of the largest integrated, grid-connected solar photovoltaic installations at a car manufacturing plant in Europe.

Since 2008, Ford has sourced renewable electricity to cover the full electric power demand at its manufacturing plant in Cologne, Germany. Through this initiative, the company is reducing its CO2 emissions 190,000 tons per year. Renewable or green power supplies 3 percent of Ford’s energy needs worldwide.

Full Line of EC Series Cranes Available From Stellar


Garner, Iowa – Stellar Industries, Inc. now offers a full line of easy to use electric/hydraulic cranes that use environmentally friendly, non-toxic hydraulic oil. The Stellar® EC Series has five models available in a range of 6,500 ft-lbs (.99 tm) up to 38,000 ft-lbs (5.25 tm). This new environmentally friendly crane line was developed based on customer requests and will enhance the current full line of the Stellar® heavy-duty mechanic service cranes.

Another Interesting Custom Flatbed From North Bay Truck Body
















Here's another unique custom flatbed manufactured by North Bay Truck Body. This one is built on a Ford F550 chassis sold by Ron DuPratt Ford in Dixon, CA. The bed includes a 12' flatbed with crossbars on 12" centers and 1-1/8" Apitong hardwood flooring for 10' of the 12' length, with the remaining 2' covered with 1/8" diamond plate steel. It also sports a 3"x2" HD material rack with no long bars and includes Rack Straps with special lights for night work. Strobe lights are attached to the front section of the material rack.

The tall boxes at the front of the body are made by Protech and are 36"x18"x64" and are mounted by cutting away part of the flatbed. The roadside box has two adjustable shelves and the curbside box has a permanent shelf and a drawer section with 6-3" aluminum pull-out drawers. Two Protech underbed boxes measuring 18"x18"x18" add additional storage. There is a custom jackhammer box at the rear end of the box right of the bumper and step with lockable access door. Customer's vises and pipe vise are installed on the rear platform.

Plateau Takes It To A Higher Level


Established in 1979, Australian-owned Plateau Food Distributors is one company that is not standing still. As a food service company Plateau supplies products to commercial clients including restaurants, cafes and caterers. Transporting Race Cars No Drag With Isuzu Truck


The Village Motors race team has turned to an Isuzu FVL 1400 to provide them with plenty of horsepower off the track.

Dave Newcombe's professionally built 2007 Pontiac GTO might fly down the quarter mile drag strip in 7.09 seconds, but it needs some help getting from garage to track.

And it's not just one car that needs transporting. Regularly travelling to competitions across Australia is a team of five (the Village Motors MotorSport's Pro Stock drag racing team), two race cars, tools and equipment.

Pro Stock drag racing cars are the highest development of 'street-appearing' four-seat sedans or coupes using V8 engines – and precious cargo for the Brisbane-based Village Motors team.

When the time came to replace their small gooseneck trailer, the team looked to Isuzu for a reliable and comfortable truck that would meet their requirements and perform well on the long-distance drives across states.

They purchased an Isuzu FVL 1400, which Dave said transports the two race cars with ease.

Dave and his team have developed a well-designed and innovative configuration. The long trailer is split into two sections: the rear holds up to two race cars plus tools and other equipment, and the front section houses an office and living quarters for the team, which is accessible via a door on the side of the trailer.

"It is a fantastic vehicle that offers us plenty of power," Dave said. "And we now also have the convenience of an office, which we work from while we're on the road."

For extra storage space, the trailer also incorporates a series of compartments in the empty spaces next to the wheels.

"The Isuzu FVL 1400 is a huge improvement on our previous transportation," Dave said.

According to Dave, the FVL 1400 is ideal for the team's highway driving, due to its spacious cab and Isri air suspension driver’s seat that boasts pneumatic lumbar support and height, rake and automatic weight adjustment.

"The cab interior is very roomy and comfortable, so it’s great for the long journeys across Queensland that we often endure," Dave said.

Mated to a nine speed air assisted shift transmission with synchromesh on the first eight gears, the FVL 1400’s six cylinder, 24 valve SiTEC Series II 295 engine offers plenty of power for both urban conditions and out on the open road and is easy to drive. The truck also features cruise control and Hill Start Aid.

Keeping the driver and occupants safe is a range of safety features including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and driver airbag.

According to Dave, the Isuzu FVL’s Hendrickson airbag suspension gives a much smoother ride, and is preferable over spring suspension for delicate loads like the team’s race cars.

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 11, 2010 – A familiar transmission – with several improvements – will manage the power produced by the all-new engine lineup of the 2011 Ford F-150. The diverse group of engines, which ranges from a 3.7-liter V6 with advanced valvetrain timing to a 6.2-liter V8, will be mated to the 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission.

This tried-and-true gearbox has been upgraded to bring available customer conveniences such as SelectShift capability with progressive range select and manual mode to the F-150 for the first time. Ford is the only manufacturer to offer a six-speed automatic transmission as standard throughout its full-size pickup lineup.

In every case the transmission has been optimized to each new engine. Available at launch are the 3.7-liter Ti-VCT (twin independent variable camshaft timing) V6, the 5.0-liter V8 and the 6.2-liter V8. An EcoBoost™ engine specially tuned for truck application joins the F-150 lineup after launch.

“The F-150 has a diverse set of customers, so we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach when matching the transmission to the engine,” said Bryant Grytzelius, 6R80 transmission engineering manager. “With the 3.7-liter engine, for example, that particular transmission has fewer clutch plates compared with the other engines. Everything is sized accordingly for optimum driveability, performance and fuel economy.”

SelectShift, progressive range select and manual mode added for 2011
Convenience and control are balanced by the 6R80’s SelectShift Automatic capability, which automatically shifts during routine operation and also allows complete manual control. Included are progressive range select and manual functions.

With progressive range select, a toggle on the shift lever allows the customer to reduce the range of available gears while in Drive. When the customer “taps” down into range select mode, the new available 4.2-inch LCD screen shows the available gears and highlights the current gear state. This feature allows the driver to limit use of upper gears when heavily loaded or while towing on grades.

For full manual function, customers also can pull the shift lever into “M” for manual mode and use the same toggle switch to select the gear desired. The display will show the selected gear, and the control system will lock the torque converter and hold that gear for a full manual transmission feel.

The 6R80’s tow/haul mode has been recalibrated to provide better control when hauling a heavy load or towing a trailer, especially when going down grades. The improved system, now integrated into the powertrain control module, uses an array of sophisticated electronic sensors to better predict the driver’s need for a downshift to provide engine braking and enhanced control.

A further refinement for 2011 is the addition of a one-way clutch, which allows for smoother 1-2 and 2-1 shifts, faster downshifts and helps improve fuel economy.

Balancing fuel economy and performance; robust testing
The 6R80’s gear ratios, span and shift schedule have been optimized for better off-the-line performance and improved fuel economy. The double-overdrive gear also provides better fuel economy.

The 6R80 has been tested to 150,000 equivalent miles in testing cycles that reflect the most extreme-use customer, and the box itself is rated up to 7,000 rpm. The fluid is filled for life.

“The increased capability and functionality of the transmission, backed by exhaustive testing, will help ensure this next F-150 will deliver everything our customers need and more,” Grytzelius said.

Interesting Welder Body From Harbor Truck Bodies Hides Everything Well






Welder Bodies come in so many different modifications, that almost any body could be a "Welder Body." Here's yet another way. This one is an 11' Harbor Service Body with 56" high compartments. It is mounted on a 108" CA chassis so that allows 2' of space in front of the body for the Miller Trailblazer welding machine. As you can see, this welder is mounted on a sliding tray which extends all the way out from the body and supports the weight nicely.

Extensive testing program to ensure truck application

To ensure the highest quality, most reliable engines, Ford engineers studied the warranty history of the outgoing engines and developed testing procedures based on the real-world driving experiences from current F-150 drivers.

Prototype engines underwent a wide range of tests to ensure complete compatibility with truck application and truck durability, with all components and systems passing testing to the equivalent of 150,000 miles. Components such as the exhaust manifolds and the crankshaft (forged steel) were upgraded, piston-cooling jets and oil coolers were added, and engines were specifically calibrated for improved heavy-duty operation and durability in F-150.

“Truck customers demand an engine that delivers outstanding low-speed torque to help tow or move heavy payloads, and sustained high-load, low-speed operation is a key attribute they look for,” said Samardzich. “The engine lineup for the 2011 Ford F-150 has been tuned specifically for truck operation needs and optimized for fuel economy. The result is a lineup that delivers class-leading towing and payload capability with outstanding horsepower, torque and fuel economy.”

Here are the highlights of each new engine:


3.7-liter four-valve Ti-VCT V6

The 3.7-liter will be the most powerful, capable and fuel-efficient base V6 of any truck in its class. Key attributes include:

• Best-in-class 300 horsepower (estimated) at 6,500 rpm
• 275 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm
• Class-leading fuel economy
• Best-in-class 6,100 pounds maximum trailer tow
• Ti-VCT creates precise, variable timing control of both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, performance and fuel economy
• E85 flex fuel capability
• Piston-cooling jets, which squirt oil on the underside of the pistons to keep the piston crowns cool under extreme operating conditions
• Forged-steel crankshaft for improved durability
• Built at Cleveland Engine Plant

The 3.7-liter V6 powering the base 2011 F-150 is the latest application of the award-winning Duratec® V6 engine, with additional technology and upgrades for truck application. In particular, more work was done on the bottom end of the engine, a strong point of all Duratec V6 engines.

“This is a well-designed engine with a massive amount of attention to detail around the block and the structure of the block,” said Jim Mazuchowski, V6 engines program manager. “This attention to the stiffness and rigidity of the bottom end, how the engine is fastened with four-bolt mains and two side bolts, enhances durability and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).”

Other enhancements for durability include a forged-steel crankshaft, cast-iron exhaust manifolds and a die-cast aluminum oil pan, which supports a 10,000-mile interval for oil changes. The design of the cylinder bore and piston rings has been optimized for efficient lubrication.

In addition to engine durability, Ti-VCT leads a host of technologies that increase overall engine efficiency. Ti-VCT’s precise and variable control of the intake and exhaust camshafts optimizes performance and fuel economy. The piston squirters enable faster engine warm-up, and the polished buckets reduce friction, which aids fuel economy.


5.0-liter four-valve dual-overhead-camshaft Ti-VCT V8

The 5.0-liter V8 in the 2011 F-150 offers many class bests compared with competitors’ entry-level V8s, including:

• Best-in-class 360 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm
• Class-leading fuel economy
• Best-in-class 9,800 pounds maximum trailer tow
• New strengthened block and new cylinder head optimized for performance and enhanced cooling
• Unique intake camshafts, combined with Ti-VCT, composite intake manifold and optimized compression ratio for improved low-speed torque and towing capability
• Forged-steel crank and all-new oil cooler enhance durability
• Piston-cooling jets, which squirt oil on the underside of the pistons to keep the piston crowns cool under extreme operating conditions
• E85 flex fuel capability
• Built at Essex Engine Plant; Windsor, Ontario

While this 5.0-liter V8 engine is similar to the one powering the 2011 Mustang GT, it has several important differences to optimize it for the harsh duty cycle truck customers demand. First, the camshafts were tuned to improve low-speed torque, which is key to truck customers. Also, the 10.5:1 compression ratio was optimized to reduce knock tendency at lower engine speeds while towing.

The hardware added to the 5.0 specifically for F-150 includes: an additional oil cooler, which helps extend the life of the oil to 10,000-mile intervals; foam covers for the fuel injectors to reduce NVH; and cast exhaust manifolds for improved durability. The new aluminum block is 70 pounds lighter than the 5.4-liter V8, which aids fuel economy and improves handling. The engine’s forged-steel crankshaft also ensures durability.

“This engine uses proven technology to deliver a great combination of low-speed torque and fuel economy with the durability F-150 customers demand,” said Mike Harrison, V8 engine programs manager.



6.2-liter two-valve single-overhead-camshaft V8

The 6.2-liter V8 is a premium engine offering on the 2011 F-150, with an expanded offering to F-150 SVT Raptor and other specialty applications. Its attributes include:

• Best-in-class 411 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 434 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm
• Best-in-class 11,300 pounds maximum trailer tow
• Competitive fuel economy
• Durability of race-proven components and technology showcased in November 2008 when a 6.2-liter Raptor R not only survived the grueling Baja 1000, it earned a podium finish. The same engine went on to complete every mile of the 2009 Best in the Desert series
• Utilizes a large bore and shorter stroke. This approach to creating power has its roots in storied Ford racing engines. The large bore allows for larger intake and exhaust valves for improved engine airflow, and the short stroke allows higher engine speed for increased horsepower
• Because of the large bore size, two spark plugs per cylinder are used to more efficiently burn the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber, enabling better fuel economy and increased engine torque. The twin plugs also help the engine maintain a smooth, stable idle
• Built at Romeo (Mich.) Engine Plant

The 6.2-liter V8, standard on the 2011 F-Series Super Duty, is uniquely tuned for the F-150 with a special cam profile. The engine will be standard on the 2011 F-150 SVT Raptor and other specialty applications, and pumps out up to 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque – making the F-150 the most powerful truck in its class.

“This engine has tons of torque, and already has been proved in the field with both the F-150 SVT Raptor and Super Duty,” said Harrison.


3.5-liter Ti-VCT EcoBoost

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost is a premium engine offering available after launch with power comparable to a naturally aspirated V8 and projected class-leading fuel economy. Its attributes include:

• Ti-VCT creates precise, variable timing control of both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, performance and fuel economy
• Fuel economy improves up to 20 percent versus 2010 model year F-150 5.4-liter V8
• Improved intake and exhaust camshafts optimized for improved fuel economy and performance
• Cast exhaust manifolds for heavy-duty operation and durability
• Improved manifold and cylinder heads for improved performance
• Direct-acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) valvetrain with polished buckets to reduce friction and improve fuel economy
• Built at Cleveland Engine Plant

Transmission features customer-driven enhancements

Ford Motor Company is the first and only manufacturer to equip its entire full-size pickup truck lineup with fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmissions as standard.

For the first time, a six-speed automatic transmission is standard in F-150 on all engines. Several available enhancements have been added to the proven 6R80 transmission to help F-150 customers tow more easily, including SelectShift with both progressive range select and manual functions.

Progressive range select allows the customer to reduce the range of available gears while in Drive. When the customer taps down into range select mode, the display shows the available gears and highlights the current gear state. This feature allows the driver to limit the use of upper gears when heavily loaded or while towing on grades.

With SelectShift, customers can get full manual function by pulling the shift lever into “M” for manual mode and then select the gear desired by pressing the “+” button for upshifts or the “-” button for downshifts. The control system will hold that gear for a full manual transmission feel.

The new engines for the Ford F-150 follow the all-new engine lineup for the 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty introduced earlier this year and highlighted by the 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbocharged diesel, which delivers best-in-class torque, horsepower and fuel economy.

“The new powertrain lineup for the 2011 F-150 will provide a wide range of choices to customers to suit their needs, each tested for maximum durability and reliability with outstanding fuel economy,” said Samardzich.

Freight Carrier U.S. Xpress Receives 50,000th Freightliner Truck from Daimler Trucks North America

Chattanooga, Tennessee – Last week, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) presented the freight carrier U.S. Xpress with its 50,000th Freightliner truck. Martin Daum, President and CEO of DTNA, and Mark Lampert, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at DTNA, handed over the vehicle to Max Fuller, co-Chairman of U.S. Xpress Enterprises, during a special ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

“We are proud of the long-term relationship between U.S. Xpress and Freightliner Trucks, and look forward to continuing to provide them with the most productive and reliable trucks available on the market,” said Daum.

U.S. Xpress’ 50,000th Freightliner-truck is a heavy-duty Cascadia equipped with a 72-inch (1.80-meter) raised roof and a Detroit Diesel DD15 engine. Fuller emphasized the importance of Freightliner for his company, stating that “Freightliner has been integral to our expansion. We like dealing with the best-in-class for everything, and the products and management of Freightliner Trucks fit that charge.”

In 1974, when he was put in charge of purchasing for Southwest Motor Freight, Fuller bought his very first Freightliner truck. “We had no commonalities in our trucks, and the oil embargo really drove fuel prices sky high in the 1970s,” said Fuller. “We bought about 150 Freightliner trucks in our very first order, which was almost half of the Southwest Motor Freight fleet at the time. The new equipment, good fuel economy, and consistent specs helped solve a lot of issues in our fast-growing company.”

After Fuller and fellow co-Chairman Patrick Quinn launched U.S. Xpress in 1985, their new company quickly grew, resulting in the purchase of 3,000 to 4,000 trucks a year. Freightliner and U.S. Xpress would establish a strong working relationship in the carrier’s early days — highlighted by Fuller providing Freightliner with a 12-year exclusive agreement that began in the late 1980s. Isuzu Delivers For Angel Springs and Bevan Bodies



Isuzu delivers for Angel Springs and Bevan Bodies offers innovative solution for fresh marketing messages

Water cooler specialist Angel Springs has a refreshing solution to the challenge of keeping its promotional messages on its trucks bang up to date – with a little help from Isuzu Truck UK and bodybuilder Bevan Group.

The operator has just taken delivery of 7 seven from an order of 15 new Isuzu N75.190 7.5-tonners with Easyshift automated transmissions. All arrived via Angel Springs’ long-term contract hire partner Fraikin, and are fitted with Bevan’s fast access curtainslider bodies. Angel Springs has worked since its inception with Fraikin –the latest 7.5-tonne Isuzu’s are the subject of six-year contract hire deals under which each will average 35,000 miles a year.

The first 7 trucks are all based at in Tring, Hertfordshire; the remaining 8 will operate from Wolverhampton and Halifax.

The Isuzu 7.5tonners with the Bevan bodies are ideally suited to multi-drop applications because the curtains are tensioned from front to back and have locks at both ends, so drivers have no time-consuming straps and buckles to contend with – to gain access they simply slide back the curtains, concertina-fashion, in seconds.

Each new Isuzu offers a payload of some 3.7 tonnes, sufficient to carry 160 20-litre bottles stored on Angel Springs’ bespoke racking, as well as eight boxes of cups and a trolley. The vehicles will make up to 45 ‘drops’ per day.


In addition to the challenge of providing easily operated and efficient delivery vehicles, Angel Springs also asked the bodybuilder to come up with a solution to the age-old problem of changing marketing messages on their trucks. If a solution could be found it would have to be one that was easy, quick and cost-effective to carry out. The Bevan Group rose to the challenge and all 15 trucks will be able to do just that.

On the rear of the body on each truck the Bevan Group has fitted a two-metre square panel that is interchangeable. This means that each truck can have a rear-facing panel that can be used to publicise the latest marketing initiatives by Angel Springs. Bevan has produced two of these aluminum-framed panels for each vehicle – one is always on the truck, the other is held at Bevan’s production facility.

Every three months Angel Springs relay their latest artwork to the Bevan Group’s graphics specialists, who transfer it to the panels. Technicians from Bevan’s aftercare team then take the new panels out to the Angel Springs locations at which the vehicles are based. Once on site they can fit the new panels and return to base with the ones they’ve removed.

Some of Angel Springs’ new trucks replace older vehicles that are being stood down but others represent a further extension to the company’s fleet of 60 trucks and vans, the vast majority of which are 7.5-tonners.
