How Many Cupholders Does My Truck Need? How About Ten?

Ford-patented design debuts on 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup – which can have as many as 10 cupholders thanks to transformable dual cupholder

ISUZU OPENS WORLD-CLASS CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA

Grand Opening of State-of-the-Art Training,
Distribution and Technical Assistance Facility

JENKINS TOWNSHIP/PITTSTON, Penn.—Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., distributor of America’s best-selling low cab forward trucks, opened its first Center of Excellence today in northeast Pennsylvania.

The complex—the first of its kind for Isuzu—is comprised of a state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot parts distribution center and a world-class 30,000-square-foot training and technical assistance facility.

The Center of Excellence puts three major functions supporting dealerships and customers in the region under one roof:

•    Parts Distribution: Over $8 million worth of parts are stocked in the facility, placing them close to a concentrated area of commercial vehicle dealers, reducing delivery time.
•    Training Center: Dealership service, parts, sales and customer satisfaction personnel from throughout the US will receive intensive, hands-on technical and lifecycle training at Isuzu Truck University.
•    Technical Assistance: The center will house local Field Service Engineers and a Technical Assistance Line team. By focusing on dealers in specific parts of the country, both teams can react to issues and trends in a faster, more personalized manner.

“This facility represents our continued focus on providing the best possible ownership experience for all Isuzu truck customers,” said Shaun Skinner, president of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America.

“Our ‘lifecycle’ business model is built on the premise that customers will look only to Isuzu for their commercial truck needs so long as we provide them the highest quality product, the least amount of downtime, and a level of service that exceeds their expectations,” Skinner said. “To do that requires a very large level of support. That’s what this Center of Excellence—and more like it in the future—will provide.”

The Center’s location in Jenkins Township/Pittston was strategically chosen. The northeast region of the country is home to one of the highest concentration of U.S. Isuzu dealerships, Isuzu commercial trucks in operation, and the company’s annual parts sales.

While this Center of Excellence is the first of its kind for Isuzu, it will not be the last. Plans are already underway to open a second facility in the United States.

“As impressive as it is, this center represents something much bigger,” said Skinner. “It represents Isuzu’s commitment to the U.S. market, and our pledge to do everything we can to support our dealer body and our customers’ ownerships experience.”

The Best Tool In The Shed by Terry Minion

I want to talk about a tool that benefits the end user. It is rare to find such a tool that serves the end user, the prospect, the dealership, the salesperson, and the entire marketplace at the same time. It is innovative, effective, easy to use, and is in operation 24/7/365; that is, if you have it.

If I were to start a commercial truck department at any dealership anywhere in the United States or Canada, this would be the very first tool I would purchase. And, I would never let it go. As I become more familiar with what it can do and be and how it can serve everyone involved, I would be celebrating this tool as not only my best tool, but THE best tool.

This tool is Work Truck Solutions. If you already have it, I cannot even imagine you letting it go, and if you haven’t yet got it, I cannot recommend it enough. It is not an option. It is an absolute necessity.

There has never been a tool like this for a commercial truck department at a dealership. In the past, showing the commercial inventory was not only a challenge, but fraught with navigation issues, lack of photos, showing a pickup image for a service body, and much more. Now, there is a specialized program to manage not only a dealership’s own commercial inventory, but more importantly, helps them to sell trucks that they don’t really have. I’ve always loved having more inventory available than I had, and I used to do that with partnerships with other dealers, and now that is a built-in help.

From a prospect, or an end user’s point of view, now the commercial truck inventory makes sense. It is searchable by body type, and a lot of other options. When someone wants a service body, they can click that box and all they will see is service bodies—those that are currently in stock and those that reside in a wide area that are available quickly. If they want only diesel service bodies, they can add that criteria to the search and see only diesel service bodies. This way the prospect or end users, gets the information they need, and can then call to see more about it. It’s as near a perfect system for finding what end user’s need in the way of commercial trucks as anything I’ve ever seen.

Although in my mind, having that inventory displayed in a way that makes it easy for the end user, is the biggest benefit, it doesn’t stop there. The ways that the sales team and managers of the department can make use of this tool extends the value greatly. It is easily one of the most helpful tools in managing commercial truck inventory. What’s even better is that the dealership’s participation in the efforts to get the units online is minimal in comparison to the way it was. Much of the inventory data is uploaded directly from the manufacturers computers systems, to make it so much easier to just fill in the rest.

I could go on and on and on about this fantastic tool. No, no one is prodding me or paying me, or even encouraging me to mention this product. I just believe in having the best tools possible, just like any crafts person might want. This is the sharpest and most effective and will be the most used tool in the shed. And, the benefits of Work Truck Solutions will continue to grow as they continue to improve their product. See more about Work Truck Solutions at www.worktrucksolutions.com.

2016 Midsize Pickup Challenge Is Coming

It's one thing to look at factory specs and dealership materials or take a pickup truck for a quick test drive; it's an entirely different thing to drive a new pickup in a head-to-head comparison test with all of its direct competitors.

Many automotive media outlets and websites are comfortable choosing winners in different automotive segments based on one editor's driving impressions or manufacturer-supplied marketing material and specifications. We see it all the time.

But that's not how we do comparisons and choose segment leaders at PickupTrucks.com.

We lasted tested the midsize pickup truck segment early in 2015, and since then Honda has released the all-new 2017 Ridgeline, and Toyota has seriously redesigned and enhanced the Tacoma. So we thought it was time to find out which midsize pickup now sits on the top of the hill.

If you've seen any of our past comparisons, you know we like to test. Specifically, we like to test trucks for their intended purposes — hauling and towing, for example — and sometimes beyond their intended abilities.

For our upcoming 2016 Midsize Pickup Challenge, we required all competitors to have four full-size doors and a four-wheel-drive system; we also asked manufacturers to get as close to a price cap of $37,500 as possible.

Winners of our comparisons tests are chosen after a week or more of testing by PUTC and sibling site Cars.com expert judges. Our fuel-economy tests are done doing empty and full-payload runs; other tests include a day at the track testing acceleration and braking (empty and loaded), dyno testing, off-roading, towing and back-to-back driving loops over the same dirt and paved roads. We even invite an in-market family, who serve as judges, to listen to manufacturer presentations and test-drive each of the competitors over identical routes. The family's scores are included in the overall test results.

From all of this we select our winner and present our data, making our testing procedures and results as transparent as possible.

The competitors for our 2016 Midsize Pickup Challenge were:

  •     2016 Chevrolet Colorado: All new two years ago and one of two platforms from GM. We had a Colorado Z71 long bed.
  •     2016 GMC Canyon: All new two years ago and one of two platforms from GM. We had a Canyon SLE short box.
  •     2017 Honda Ridgeline: All new this year, it continues to provide qualities of both an SUV and pickup. We had a Ridgeline RTL-E.
  •     2016 Nissan Frontier: The oldest of our competitors still offers a strong value. We had the Frontier PRO-4X.
  •     2016 Toyota Tacoma: Significantly upgraded and improved for 2016, this is the volume leader. We had a Tacoma TRD Off Road.

As you can imagine, putting a PUTC Challenge together takes some time; you can expect the full story and results in late August. Any guesses how it turned out?

What if no one is ready for self-driving vehicles?

My good friend and colleague Kevin Jones – editor of Fleet Owner’s brother publication, American Trucker magazine – penned an insightful blog post the other day, musing about the potential pushback against autonomous vehicles (AVs) in the wake of Tesla’s notorious autopilot failure back in May that killed a driver who literally wasn’t driving his self-guided vehicle when it slammed into (of all things) a tractor-trailer.

It’s interesting to also note that vehicle safety regulators are bluntly stating that this incident is not going to slow down their efforts to make AVs an everyday driving reality.

Indeed, it’s been fascinating for me to watch just how fast and hard the Obama administration, through the U.S. Department of Transportation, (DOT), is trying to speed up the AV development process largely for potential safety advantages – making them a key piece of a major technology investment push announced back in January.

Even state legislatures are jumping aboard the AV bandwagon, looking for ways to help spur more self-driving pilot tests – even for autonomous commercial vehicles.6:55 AM 7/24/2016

Tesla: Trucks Are Coming

Elon Musk's most recent master plan presentation for Tesla's future officially includes a pickup truck and some types of commercial vehicles.

According to USA Today, Tesla will be venturing into the light- and heavy-duty pickup segments at some point in the future. No timing details have been given yet.

In fact, what Tesla CEO Musk actually wants to do is completely revolutionize the auto industry, the energy industry and even space exploration, any one of which would be daunting. We have to admit, going after all three of these massive undertakings makes it a little difficult to take the idea that an all-electric set of pickups or big rigs are on the horizon.

To date, no major manufacturer is making an electric or hybrid pickup truck. The only success story in the category is the fleet-biased repackaging company VIA Motors, but sales have been relatively low and sluggish compared to other pickup makers. With that said, we do think there could be a place for such a pickup, especially if it offered some unique features and capabilities.

In the meantime, it's possible both Ford and GM (and maybe Toyota) could come to market relatively soon with a hybrid powertrain before Tesla announces the next phase of its newest master plan.

2017 Ford F-150 with All-New 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 Nets Best-in-Class, V8-Beating 470 lb.-ft. of Torque, More Horsepower

  •     All-new, second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine in the 2017 Ford F-150 produces 375 horsepower and a segment-best 470 lb.-ft. of torque, a gain of 10 hp and 50 lb.-ft. from previous 3.5-liter EcoBoost
  •     Class-leading torque of 3.5-liter EcoBoost  and new 10-speed automatic transmission will deliver improved acceleration and performance
  •     3.5-liter EcoBoost paired exclusively with the first volume-production 10-speed automatic transmission available from any automaker
Ford, America’s truck leader, continues its relentless pace of innovation, delivering segment-leading torque for 2017 F-150 customers with the all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission.

The new second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine will provide 50 lb.-ft. more peak torque compared with the first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, to a segment-best 470 lb.-ft., beating all diesel- and gasoline-powered competitors, including V8 engines with nearly twice the displacement of the EcoBoost V6. Horsepower jumps 10 from the previous version, to 375 hp.

“The 2017 Ford F-150 now delivers the best torque in the segment,” says Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, Product Development, and chief technical officer. “This class-leading torque arrives with a transformative 10-speed automatic that improves nearly every aspect of F-150 performance.”

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost in the 2017 F-150 is paired exclusively with the first volume-production 10-speed automatic transmission available to consumers from any automaker.

The more capable powertrain combination will deliver improved acceleration and performance compared with previous six-speed automatic transmissions. The new engine provides better low-end and peak engine performance, ideal for hauling heavy payloads and towing heavy trailers.

The new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine builds on the success of the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine and first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine available for the 2016 F-150. The 2.7-liter and first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines account for approximately 60 percent of F-150 sales.

The Ford F-150 remains the first and only truck in its segment to offer a twin-turbo gasoline engine.

The 2017 Ford F-150 goes on sale this fall.

Chevrolet Presents Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition to All-Star Game MVP Eric Hosmer

SAN DIEGO – The 2016 Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, Eric Hosmer, chose a Chevrolet Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition during the MVP award ceremony presented by Chevrolet at Petco Park in San Diego on Tuesday night.

Chevrolet, America’s most awarded car company, gave Hosmer who went 2-for-3 in the contest with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored, his choice between the 50th Anniversary Edition Camaro SS Convertible and a Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition.

This is Hosmer’s first All-Star MVP award and the first for a Kansas City Royal since Bo Jackson in 1989.

“Hosmer’s spectacular on-field performance tonight demonstrates to all baseball fans and especially our kids that hard work, determination and teamwork is what wins, and that is why Chevrolet is proud to present the MVP award,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet.
Chevrolet has been the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball® since 2005 and through its Chevrolet Youth Baseball program has helped raise more than $28 million to aid hometown teams over the last 10 years. Nearly 5.2 million young people in communities across the country have benefitted from the program, and more than 1,500 Chevrolet dealers are involved.

Additionally, through Chevrolet Youth Baseball, more than 90,000 equipment kits have been donated to teams around the country, nearly 11,000 parks have been renovated and more than 111,000 children received complimentary instruction on baseball fundamentals.

“At Chevrolet, we appreciate the power of play and the positive effect that it has on our kids,” said Sweeney. “That positive effect on our kids and ultimately on our communities is why it is so important to us and our Chevrolet dealers to support baseball at every level.”
During the afternoon’s Red Carpet Parade, Hosmer, along with his All-Star Game teammates from both the American and National Leagues, signed a 50th Anniversary Edition Camaro hood that will be auctioned in the coming days on MLB.com. The proceeds of that auction will support the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation.

The Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition that Hosmer chose begins as a black Z71 Colorado Diesel and adds an all-black front end with body-colored grille, bumper, badging, black 17-inch wheels and aggressive Goodyear DuraTrac® tires that add a rugged, off-road appearance.

GMC Named Most Ideal Popular Brand For Third Straight Year

Sierra, Yukon, Acadia top segments
in AutoPacific’s 2016 Ideal Vehicle Awards

DETROIT – GMC today was named Most Ideal Popular Brand in AutoPacific’s 2016 Ideal Vehicle Awards for the third consecutive year. Three GMC models led their respective segments, one of only two automakers to do so.

The Acadia topped the Large Crossover SUV segment and the Yukon/Yukon XL ranked highest in the Large SUV segment. The brand’s top-selling vehicle, the GMC Sierra, led the Light Duty Pickup category for the second straight year.

Available now, the all-new 2017 GMC Acadia offers precisely-crafted interior features, next generation infotainment and innovative driver alert technologies for a quality, comfortable and convenient traveling experience.

The 2016 Ideal Vehicle Awards are based on responses from over 65,000 owners of new 2015 and 2016 model year vehicles across all major manufacturers. Surveyed after 90 days of ownership, customers were asked which changes they would make to their car or truck in 15 key categories, including ride and handling, interior storage, safety features, power and acceleration and technology.

“By asking vehicle owners if they would change various aspects of their vehicle if given the opportunity, we not only identify problem areas and opportunities for improvement, but we also find out which manufacturers are truly hitting the mark with owners,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.

“The results demonstrate we are succeeding in our mission to provide our customers with a premium ownership experience,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC. “We are blending precision design, technology and capability throughout our lineup. When you add our luxury-focused Denali portfolio, which makes up nearly 25 percent of GMC sales, we are setting ourselves apart from our competitors.”

For more information about AutoPacific’s 2016 Ideal Vehicle Awards, visit www.autopacific.com.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, with innovation and engineering excellence built into all GMC vehicles. The brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC’s highest-volume vehicle, the Sierra pickup, is the most powerful light-duty pickup on the market, and the first full-size pickup to receive the highest-possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration changed its New Car Assessment Program for the 2011 model year. All-New Ford F-Series Super Duty Leaves the Rest Behind; Raises Towing, Hauling, Engine Power to Next Level

  •     Most capability: All-new F-Series Super Duty can tow heavier trailers and haul heavier cargo than ever before, with maximum gooseneck towing capacity raised to 32,500 pounds on F-450, fifth-wheel towing capacity boosted to class-leading 27,500 pounds and conventional towing to class-leading 21,000 pounds; maximum payload now rated at up to best-in-class 7,630 pounds
  •     Most power: 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel boosts horsepower to a class-leading 440 and torque to a class-leading 925 lb.-ft. for all pickup models – from F-250 to F-450; 6.2-liter V8 gas model offers best-in-class torque of 430 lb.-ft.
  •     Most confidence: Class-exclusive smart technologies help make towing easier and enable increased confidence, including BLIS® with trailer tow, adaptive cruise control that works with the heaviest trailers, and Trailer Reverse Guidance to help back trailers up
DEARBORN, Mich., July 18, 2016 – Ford, America’s truck leader, is taking heavy-duty trucks to the next level with the all-new 2017 F-Series Super Duty – empowering customers with the most towing and hauling capability and the most horsepower and torque of any heavy-duty pickup truck.

Super Duty’s enhanced capability starts with high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy and high-strength steel that help reduce weight by up to 350 pounds. Ford reinvested that weight savings in more robust components everywhere it counts to give customers more towing and hauling capability than ever before.

Foundational improvements for every Super Duty pickup truck include an all-new, fully boxed frame that is more than 95 percent high-strength steel and up to 24 times stiffer than the previous frame to support increased towing and hauling. The all-new high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body is more dent and ding resistant than the previous steel body.

“This is the best heavy-duty truck we’ve ever made,” says Doug Scott, Ford truck marketing manager. “We listened to our customers and created the toughest, smartest and most capable Super Duty ever.”

The future of towing is now
The 2017 Super Duty is the undisputed leader in towing, offering available best-in-class performance in all towing categories, plus smart technology no other competitor has to enable greater confidence when towing.

Ford F-450 Super Duty SuperCrew 4x4 now features a maximum gooseneck tow rating of 32,500 pounds – 1,290 pounds more than its nearest competitor, a regular cab two-door pickup. Maximum fifth-wheel towing is increased to 27,500 – 2,500 pounds better than the nearest competitor.

Maximum conventional towing is increased to 21,000 pounds – 1,000 pounds better than the nearest competitors’ trucks and without the need for a weight-distributing hitch. Maximum conventional towing with F-250, with the all-new trailer tow package, and F-350 single-rear wheel are increased to a class-leading 18,000 pounds.

Maximum gross combined weight rating for truck and trailer now tops out at a class-leading 41,800 pounds. That is more than half the maximum weight of an 18-wheeler semi-tractor trailer combination on most federal highways.

This industry-defining capability is matched by never-before-seen towing technology. Super Duty is the first truck to offer adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support for heavy trailers, allowing truckers to traverse steep mountain grades while maintaining speed – even with a trailer weighing 32,500 pounds.

A center high-mounted stop lamp camera provides visibility into the cargo box, which is especially helpful when hooking up gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers. An Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera System uses four digital, high-definition cameras to give the driver a 360-degree bird’s-eye view surrounding Super Duty. Trailer Reverse Guidance provides visual cues and tips to help ease backing up a trailer. A first-ever factory-available trailer camera can be custom-placed on a trailer to improve visibility backing up.

Trailer towing customers benefit from a segment-first in-cab trailer tire pressure monitoring system, accessible from the comfort of the cab while stopped or on the highway. Blind Spot Information System with trailer tow is optimized for Super Duty to include the length of the trailer up to 33 feet long; BLIS® uses radar sensors in the taillamps to monitor areas that may not be visible to the driver.

Payload dominance
Super Duty can haul more than any other heavy-duty pickup. Maximum payload of the 2017 Ford Super Duty F-350 is 7,630 pounds – more than any competitor, period. F-250 Super Duty boasts the same dominance over its peers; with maximum payload of 4,200 pounds, it can haul more than 600 pounds over its nearest competitor.

More power than ever
The Ford-designed, Ford-engineered, Ford-built second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel that powers Super Duty now delivers a best-in-class combination of 440 horsepower and a staggering 925 lb.-ft. of torque. That power is standard for every Super Duty diesel pickup – from F-250 to F-450 – without requiring special tuning or unique hardware.

The standard 6.2-liter V8 now offers best-in-class torque among gasoline engines of 430 lb.-ft., with standard 385 horsepower.

Both diesel and gasoline engines are backed by the TorqShift six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission for reliable and efficient cross-country towing. The F-250 pickup with 6.2-liter V8 and all-new TorqShift-G six-speed automatic delivers improved fuel economy and capability for three-quarter-ton Super Duty customers.

Ford has redefined leadership in the heavy-duty pickup truck market, delivering never-before-seen productivity for today’s heavy-duty truck customer. The 2017 F-Series Super Duty is a purpose-built machine for getting work done faster, smarter and more efficiently. The all-new Super Duty goes on sale this fall.
